DIY LED grow lights experiences

I'm getting a lot more male flowers from using HPS + red. I think the excessive yellow light which is highly imbalanced causes a lot of stress for plants.

Some plants have a higher tendency towards producing male flowers, but using all that yellow puke colored light causes them to produce even more.

My lemon skunk always does better under a 400w CMH than even a 1000w HPS. Balanced light is key.

from what I understand, it's confusing as I believe that only applies to the white led's..I think only thing they changed is to go to higher output. not higher lumen

" Clearly, Cree's 88% brighter claim was relative to LEDs from competitors and not its own prior-generation XP-E color LEDs. Based on a look at the data sheets, the new royal blue LEDs offer around a 30% improvement over Cree's prior LEDs in the same package. The improvement in the other colors varies by color but is generally below 15%. Still, that upgrade can be significant in many applications."

Wow... 27 pages later, great read... I'm thinking its time I build my own custom LED now and believe me this is not the first thread i've gone through, I think I found you guys in a few corners of the web while I caught up over the past year of progress. I've been tempted by a few panels (Grow Northern/Dutch Passions offerings, Eshines DS 11 bands etc.), but I really want to be able to build custom panels in order to suit my grow area best and try to maximize results. I have a little drobe around 75*55cm deep and run 250-400w hps usually each for 4 weeks during flower after vegging with a 125w cfl. I'm debating what kind of spectrum to go for, but the whites and reds are the priorities I feel mainly. I do want a few blue in there. I usually have my 250w hps around 6" away from my scrog screen and have managed 8-10oz over the past 3 crops pretty consistently. I'd like to be able to run 250-400w of led power in there as an alternative. Because of the density of my scrog a I wonder if a 150SSL would be better for the reds? or perhaps use 90's and then a secondary optic such as used by the grow northern panels in order to distribute light. I also have another possible project, a stainless steel box I have... Perhaps I could use it was the heatsink for a small wall mounted veg/mother room.

Have there been any developments over the past few months?

Thankyou to everyone thats contributed here and elsewhere, Guod, SupraSPL, green surfer and others
