730nm Flower Initiator vs Blue Dream - Outdoors

Hi everyone!

i wanted to start up a little thread real quick about this "Flower Initiator" that i got a week or so ago and am putting to use on my outdoor Blue Dream.

about the plant:
she's exactly 4 months old, today, from seed. i started her indoors in April under a single Inda-Go Pro-200-PAR, at about a month or so, she moved into my 5x10 tent that at that time had 2 Inda-Gro Pro-420-PARs and 2 Pro-200-PARs and continued to veg 24/7 for another month or so. then she got transplanted to her present pot (the bottom half is filled with recycled Happy Frog soil that i re-amended, the top half is fresh) and moved to the back yard; about 2 months or so ago. she's all organic.

i don't have a totally complete photo-log of her, but i do have some that were taken over the past months that can still show her progress:

8/16: construction on the pvc tripod to position the light is done, and waiting for dusk for the light to come on.


8/16, just before the first activation of the Flower Initiator.


8/16, about 15 minutes after the light has come on. it seems dim just at dusk, but by 9pm, it illuminated my shirt as i stand next to the plant in the dark. just gotta remember that our eyes aren't really sensitive to this light.



well, that's it for now... i plan on posting updates at least on a weekly interval, but i will be sure to post the day that she shows floral crowning.

Never heard of a flower initiator but red at that level is what a plant uses to signal flowering time.
If you use it on an outdoor plant, will the plant not just see this as being in the shade rather than a flower signal the sun will still continue the same light it had before the flower initator

George, it may trigger "Shade Avoidance Syndrome", and that would be indicated by excessive etoliation. according to my academic understanding of the topic, in a nutshell, the plant figures what to do based off of ratios of hormones, in this case Phytochrome. ie: the ratio of Pfrr, and also if the ratio is signaled across the entire plant, or just a portion (like a branch), and then that is assessed against overall PAR stimulation. the plant is roughly able to figure out if it's shading its own limbs, or if it's in shade, full sunlight, or dusk/dawn, and over time a circadian rhythm builds up in the hormone levelss. i waited for last night because it was the first night for my area that has a 10 hour duration. that plus the projected 2 hour night gain from dusk exposure to the 730nm should get her close enough to 12 hours to get her to flip. now, if i turned it on while the sun was beating down on her, then the increase of far red vs red might cause her to think that she's in some sort of shade (if it would even be perceptible to her vs the summer sun), but i only run it from dusk, and for just 2 hours. time will tell tho... time will tell...

heya Chronik: this wee lil beastie is a massive 9 watts (9 one watt diodes), and has a waterproof housing.

Oh yip, i use a couple of the 6000-6500k 10w's in my grow. And a 30w also. They are awesome!

so far, so good... no etoliation so far, but it's only been one night. it's proper dark out now, but the light will still be on for another 40 minutes. hopefully she'll start showing something worth posting soon!

past few days been hellishly hot on her too... 12 gallons of water in just the past 2 days!

hopefully the upcoming break in the heat will help her feel more comfortable sexin it up out there on the early schedule.

pardon the fact that my video phone thing sucks and i can't really get a nice close up with it. for the next video of her, perhaps i'll be able to borrow my friends hd capable phone thing and get a really clear video of her.

none the less, i'm pretty amazed that she is showing on her tips so quickly. i'm really eager to see how she'll keep up this pace, and also to see if i need to use it past sept 25th, which is going to be our first natural 12 hour night.

well, i need to get running, this little girl wants more gallons upon her roots, and then i need to get washed up and go feed the tent...

Just a little curious, maybe you mentioned this and I just didn't catch it, but what are you doing in this experiment to record the results? I mean, the changes the 730nm wavelength makes.to the plant are chemical so the only way I would expect to know if its working or not would be time duration til harvest or having a control plant of same stain, conditions, etc but no 730nm exposure. Or are you just familiar enough with the stain that yoy can eyeball whether or not its having any effect? Thanks and I've also done abit of far red experimenting myself so I'm interested in your trial here.

i actually have a clone of her that, while not as big or in as big of a pot, is also outside but not near the experiment. this particular clone was taken off the BD when she was one month old and sat in DWC til rooted, then went to soil. i'll take peeks out there and pics too... i might be back shortly with an update -=o)

k, this is the other BD, the first clone i took from her. this ones had roots about 3 months and has been outside (closer to the house and more shaded) for about 2 weeks now. she's showing a little of the sexy.. but wait til the big one.


here's my Grand Daddy Purp. she was originally brought outside to be taken down to clones and decommissioned, but i ended up always having things get in my way, time-wise, so i never ended up getting around to it. then she went ahead and started budding a few days ago. notice the prolific sexy? especially compared to the one above.


this is the view from the GDP to the BD under the 730nm. the control BD is behind me as i am standing to take this pic.

and here are some pics of the big girl:

all of her tops are crowning like that. and she smells so alive! by the way, she took down another 6 gallons last night...

well i'm off to clean the oil rig and then get to some clone planting in veg... i'll be posting a new video update on the bloom tent in the Inda-Gro thread later this evening!

k, all freshly dabbed and the back is feeling much better. i was able to go back out for more pics of other plants that are outdoors.


this is a Raspberry Kush that, after i took a series of clones from several months ago, i decided to use as an experimental test subject. i put her on the "12+1", aka the "gas lantern routine" and after a month she was looking all out of whack: she was stunted and very compact. axillary nodes upon axillary nodes so tight it was filthy. i had to go thru her limb by limb and remove the base 2 shoots and then every other shoot working to the tips, on every limb. it was obscene. then somewhere along the way she got all root bound. i took her out of the #5 tall she was in, cut the base few inches of roots off and put her in her present #7, i also ended up having to take a long bread knife to her root mass (straight cuts working out from the half radius point towards the container wall - 6 cuts that went straight to the bottom of the pot. at this point i was just trying to break her root binding and get her to root into the new soil.

a few months ago i started getting really into custom AACTs and limited my testing of it to non-medical plants. our bamboo absolutely love it. my cherry tomatoes... don't look like cherry tomatoes:


and the blueberry bushes gave a mixed vote; one liked it and the other about died. i did dosage tweaking and came to a happy dosage of 4-8 ounces of the tea to a gallon of water. it seems to act as a stress reliever and it reboots the soil pH. in regards to the above Raspberry Kush, she had never really recovered from my intentional hardhandedness... she kept on a steady decline (if i weren't planning on using her as a test subject i would have long since pulled her to free up the adult spot as well as the pot) until i gave her the tea. i don't really have pics of her, as she wasn't intended to be photogenic... in any event, i was planning on chopping her to the DWC cloner but i might just let her go and finish up out here... especially if she starts to show on her own soon. otherwise she's simply acting as another refrence to the change in season, like an almost-control for the 730nm experiment.

and heres a plant that was cloned off the above Raspberry Kush. this poor girl came down with a slight case of mites a while back and so she went outside. the days were in the 100s and she didn't like it. i pulled her 5 base limbs off and put them in some water (to clone them later) and have just been keeping her out here in the meantime. once i bring a plant outside, it doesn't go back into a clean room...


but i wanted to post these other pics of different strains that are also outside with the big Blue Dream, but not getting her 730 exposure. i'm thinking of moving the GDP thats flipping over next to the BD that has the light, see what progresses for her.

HAHA! i really laughed in real life as you snuck that in while i was typing my last post...

anywho, lawn mowing isn't an option for me, as i have 3 herniated discs from t6 thru t9, or basically right between my shoulder blades. and, our lawn mower is broken. but that's OK, because i hate grass and we have plans to pull it all out soon and we want to put in a hoop house and maybe a fish pond.

ya man. this back yard is a lot bigger than you can see from the pics of it. aside from the main central part, there are 2 fenced off side run areas that are 10ft and 15ft wide respectively. we borrowed a friends lawnmower once before, it was a beast of a mower with huge wheels and a high deck... our grass kicked that mower's motor's ass.

so we just stopped watering it, and we're letting it die. it'll be gone by next season as we are planning on a hoop house or 2 for the yard. i say why use your yard to grow a worthless plant like grass when you can grow veggies or meds!
