My DWC hydro DIY thread

Hey guys,
I've mentioned I few time that I'd throw up a thread on my DIY hydro rig.

I live 100's of miles from a hydro shop so this is how I grow.

I use the tub in tub style, it used to be popular many years ago in my parts, but it seems less so today.

Its cheap, easy and very rewarding.

From your hardware store, get yourself some large rectangle, stackable tubs.
get one shallow one and one deeper one.

in the shallow one drill as many holes as you can (see pic) and clean/smooth the edges of the drilled holes.

also from your hardware shop, get yourself some plumbing parts.

next go to your pet store or aquarium and get a water pump, an aquarium heater, an air pump and air stones.

Now set-up your plumbing on the same tub that you drilled the holes in.
(Copy my pics for setting up your plumbing, or do something similar)

Now in your second tub, set up your pumps, heater and air stones, its the same principal as running a tropical fish tank, this is your res.
next place your top tub onto your res in the stackable position.

Connect your plumbing to your pump, fill your res, and fill your top tub with media, and off you go.

Notes.
for my plumbing, I run a tube from the pump in my res, up to a tap before my drippers.
The tap lets me control the drip rate.
i then have a second tap before another tube that runs back down into the res, this allows me to create even more water flow and movement in my res, but this is optional.

I also use two different size res tubs, one smaller one for early on and then I switch to the larger one when the roots have nearly filled the small one. This allows me to save on nutes and a second tub makes doing res changes a lot easier.

All in all this is a great way to grow hydro.
if you maintain ph, ppm, temps and light cycle you can't go wrong.

Any questions or feedback welcome.

cheers.

That will work, but watering from the top down will increase the amount of roots within the top 2"

Setup looks nice. Clean in simple. You wrote it's "very rewarding", let's see some pictures of the plants with buds that led to that conclusion. No doubt it will work but since you said 'very' rewarding I'm just curious, did you finish a run yet?

How do you keep your reservoir temps down?
Considering he mentioned he's 100s of miles from a hydro shop and got an aquarium "heater" I assume that's not much of an issue in his area.

Cool n' all but I don't like having my plant roots competing with one another and impeding one another's growth.

They don't impend, I change up to a larger res when the roots start getting big.
i put this down as a plus with this setup, it has more room for roots then all of the commercial hydro systems I have seen.

or you could use four square tubs linked to a external res, same as a RDWC

Day 20 of 12/12 (day 10 from first signs of flower)

All three girls are well into the flower phase now. The Urkle is already coating herself with frost, and is looking like a she might be a fast finisher, or she will be one big bitch.

the love potion is going good and fuss free.

And the mataro blue is still putting out the most stretch, but even with the long stretch, her stems are thick, and tricky to lst
Keeping an even canopy is hard work with the mataro,

Day 26

Girls are poking along nicely.

I rigged up some wedges to fan out the sides of my tent, managed to give me a few more inches to play with.

not much else to report on.

thanks :)

its a 1.2x1.2m tent. 1x 400w hps and a bank of 4x 24w t5's lights.
im using dutch master nutes.

not exactly sure what brand and size my extraction can fan is, but it's more than enough for my tent (apparently)

I have another osculating fan, and a clip on fan blowing over the girls. I normally just have a passive intake unless the temps get high, or late in flower.

Day 35 in 12/12 (including transition)

I couldn't have picked three completely different plants if I tried.

The urkle still looks like its a fast finisher.
The fast initial growth has slowed, and now she seems to have started the fattening stage already.
And like her predecessors, she looks like having dense golf ball size nugs.

A few of her older fan leaves have started to yellow a little, which I put down to me taking it easy on the N in veg, in order to combat the leave claw this strain seems to be prone to.

the fruity smell has started, and the frost is starting to cake on.
She's going to be tasty :)

The mataro blue has now decided to do her thing.

She was once the baby in the group, but now she is starting to produce some big ass colas. And I can finally see some calyx's behind all the white hairs.

the green love potion is completely different again.
she will be a late(ish) finisher, with all the action coming in her last few weeks.
She is the most sativa out of all three.

I love when you get in the last month of flowering, it has to be the best time of a grow IMO.
