Welcome!

I'll start off by asking you to chime in with your input/advice/wisdom at any time you feel necessary. I always have an ear open to anyone who thinks they can help me achieve horticultural greatness.

This is my first grow under HID lights and I'm stoked about it. I've been given some seeds from a few friends and luckily two have germed. One is Goo and one is Mango, but I'm not quite sure which.

Here they are as of a 3 days ago, new pics tomorrow.

20110212020028.jpg20110212020017.jpg

They're 15 days into veg now and I plan on keeping them there until the moment feels right.

I've also germed two Purple Maroc seeds (fem) and they both poked their heads out this afternoon. Pics of them as soon as the become somewhat more interesting.

Here's the tent they'll be growing in. It's 36x20x62 and line with mylar.

Question: is 18 inches a good distance for seedlings to be from an MH lamp?

Also, is 400w going to be enough light for a tent of my size?

Thanks! +rep for help as usual!bongsmilie

60 watts of light is needed per square feet. In a 36"x20" space, 400 watts is going to work out just fine. Distance to the plant should be measured with the back of your hand. Hold the back of your hand flush with the tops of your plants & see if the light burns your hand. If you can hold your hand in place for a minute or so without it burning then you're fine but if it hurts you, you will need to adjust the light accordingly. I peeped your 1st grow journal btw, awesome grow for your 1st time.

im going to sub this one they look good i agree with everything pete says follow that and you will be fine. 36x20 with a 400 is going to kick ass lets see these babies grow.

Well, if they could stand to be closer, I guess I should move the light. Thanks for subbing, I promise to keep things interesting. If my new seeds get here soon enough I may add one or two more plants to the mix.

Thanks for the ups on my first grow. Skunk is definitely a good beginner strain, I fucked it up a lot and it powered right through. I still can't believe I pulled over a zipper from one plant under cfls. I've moved on to bigger and better lights, but I'll always carry a reverance for cfls and their highly skilled users. Never knock cfl until you try it :P

Looking good I'm subbed. I guess 18in. is ok. Seedlings and small plants don't like so much light at an early age. Just watch out. they seem to be doing fine. What kind of soil you using?

Best of luck man.

Will you be explaining your brothers experiment with electricity with us, you know you mention in your 1st grow! i wanna know :P
i just bought a 4'x4'x6' mylar tent aswell and ordered some Skunk#1 and some mango strain too
:P see my crazy set up! down below

Basically the experiment was this: Can electricity stimulate plant growth?

He bought a bunch of the same little houseplants from Home Depot and did a test with them. The control group just got water and sunlight. Other groups received water, sunlight, and 5 minutes of electricity each day from various sources.

He had 4 groups including the control. The electricity would be carried over to the soil/roots with alligator clips. He had one group getting their buzz from 9V batteries, one from those big-ass 6V batteries they have in middle school science labs, and one other group whose source escapes me right now.

His results indicated that the plants boosted with the 6V charge were significantly larger than the other groups. Pretty cool if you ask me. The dude won the Utah state youth science fair with it in 7th grade, so it seems like he did a good job. He's way smarter than me, so I'm inclined to believe it may have some validity.

I won't be trying it on this grow, I plant on buying a 5 pack of all the same strain when I do it. It's gonna be a much more well-measured grow when I do it, but that's far from now. Feel free to give it a try if you want. I'd be down to see how it affects my favorite plant in the world.

hey thanks for sharing with us!. i'm and open minded bloke when it comes to new things, i do like to hear that these idea's aren't just blazed as fuck stoner ones (i get heaps of those :P) and it does sound like it credible, i will have to hang around and see how this grow goes for ya and then razz ya up to do the experiment with your new beans!

I plan on trying it out when I have 4 clones. If it's the exact same plant, my control couldn't be faulted for using different plants or even different seeds of the same strain.

UPDATE TIME

First off, all apologies. My thread indicates I'm growing Purple Nepal, when I'm actually growing Purple Maroc. I kind of mix them up because I used to live near a dispensary that had badass ounce specials on PM and it was all I smoked for about 2 months.

Anyway, before we start on each plant as an individual, here's a group shot, and a pic of the tent where the magic happens.

20110215194639.jpg20110207035159.jpg

The Goo & Mango have been yellowing a bit, so I've been trying to just give them distilled water for the time being. Correct me if I'm wrong, but this looks like nute burn. If it's the opposite and they actually need ferts, tell me now before they keel over.

Here they are at 15 days of veg. Looking a little dinky if you ask me, but I always want them to be huge right away, so what do I know?

20110215194546.jpg20110215194538.jpg

The PM seedlings are looking just fine. They're on a steady diet of distilled water whenever the bottom of the soil dries out, blissfully unaware of the fact that I plan to kill them and smoke their vaginas for pleasure.

They're so cute at that age...

The summary on Attitude's website claims that these do much better outdoors, but seeing as I don't live in a place where it would be wise to grow outdoors, they're just gonna have to be cool with what I'm giving them. Or suffer the consequences.

DK im still laughing at your vagina comment, so harsh but true....well done, as for the pH'd water slow and steady wins the race, just becareful and always moniter them

and yes they are cute at that age :P

From what I can see (at least according to that site), it's probably a deficiency. I haven't given them any food and I just realized they're over 2 weeks old :P. I guess it's time for their first meal. I'll be feeding them a regular dose of FF Grow Big from now on.

I've heard it's good alternate watering with distilled water and water with nutes. Anyone ever try this/hear the same thing?

After re-checking my sources, it looks like it's an N deficiency. Yellowing lower leaves? Check. Stunted growth? Check. This is kind of a hallmark for me. I've never actually let my plant get low on anything before. It's kind of nice to see that I'm not over-zealously drowning my plants with nutes and crap they don't need right now for once.

A deficiency this early won't stunt them in the long run, will it?

EDIT: Meh, even if it does, I'll just pop some of the new seeds and veg these even longer, I guess:dunce:

are talking about "making it rain" then yes you are close.......

this applies to nature, as in correct me if im wrong (anybody else that may know) is that if you water your plants with a lower pH water like distilled which no ppm almost then the plant will accept this, but in nature when 'it rains' that has a pH of 6.5 in which soiled plants THRIVE in, so yeah if you use a water, feed, water, feed program, then this can apply to you and the making it rain program,

Try and resolving the N problem by its self because by just adding a stronger fertiliser which will have a high N-P-K reading, doesnt necessarally mean that the plant needs the potassium and or phosphorus with it as well.

I have some MG organic that's all N (8-0-0). According to the label it's just made from molasses, so I could just add a little to my premixed FF nutes. That would work, right?

And I was totally talking about making it rain. I read that in a thread here one time and just can't remember who posted it.

yeah, thats it, try a little foliar feeding through a spray bottle this should hasten up the delivery of N content, trying to get it through the roots can be problemattic as its not a fast track way of telling if your plants needs Nitrogen, the foliar program will and you can stop at any time, while adding it to the soil, you a taking a pot guess at how much N lockout has occured

if you dont have any 'saturate' or similar you can use a few drops of dish washing liquid, this does the same thing as saturater!

the reason if you are un-sure is this acts as a spreading agent over the slightly waxey leaves....try this at home now, fill up a bowl with water a put 1 drop of dishwashing liuid soap in there and see what happens, you will see a rainbow prism effect occor over the water surface, notice how quickly the soap reached the out side of the bowl, this will aid your plants in taking up the mollasses solution!!

hope this helps buddy! :)

try and get one mate...they are cheap as shit. having such a small molecule helps the plant to take it up, you need the small droplets as just dipping the plant in water will sort of drown it, plants breathe and expire just as humans do, i rather take a shower than a bath if ya know what i mean :P

Well, as luck would have it, I found a spray bottle. It came with my bearded dragon's cage and I completely forgot about it. Just misted them and now it's off to bed. If they know what's good for them, they'll be trees in the morning.
