Virgin goes all the way

Hay folks thought that would get your attention.

This is my first ever indoor grow and I thought i'd post some pics and details of whats happening here.

I'm on my first week so far running a Low budget/Low Skill closet NFT system with just one baby at the moment under an HID lamp and reflector.

I know that it is total over kill to use a 400 watt lamp for one baby plant but I do intend to plant two more but was scared to kill the plants right at the first stage so I thought i'd get germination out the way with one seed first.

My closet is about 4 feet by 2 feet by 3 feet. The main thing I am struggling with at the moment is keeping the temps low. I have got my bedroom window open and a fan sucking air in from the slightly open door but it's quite chilly outside so I am getting a pretty steady temp of 24°C during the day but at night if I have to shut my window and keep the closet door almost totally closed the temps can run up to 32°C and thats with the fans on full blast.

I don't currently have any holes in the closet at the moment but I need to move it tomorrow so will try and put some holes for the fans in the back even if its a bit holy to start with.

As I said i'm currently on week 1; I germinated the seed on Friday 26th Feb using the paper towel method. It sprouted on Monday 1st Feb and Today I took these two photos.

How do you think it looks? I know the pics arent great as they are taken from my iPhone but I cant find my digi cam at the moment.

I germinated the seed in water only then moved it to a rockwool mini cube and then to a 3 inch rockwool cube once the roots showed have been keeping it watered with a half strength nutrient solution of formulex in the NFT system.
How often should I change the nutrient solution? it started with 15litres of water in it and doesn't seem to have dropped very much.

Geese thats a lot of typing.

Anyways What do you think?

She( Feminised seeds so lets hope) has two big leafs and two new ones just coming in.:-P

Just tried to check the PH of the solution in the NFT tank but I cant seem to get a level reading. I'm using a cheap Digital PH meter off of eBay. It seems to give level readings if I stick it into a jug of water but as soon as I put it in the nft tank the readings jump from between 5.5 and 6.3. Do you think this is because the fluid in the tank is moving?

Would I be better extracting some of the solution from the tank and testing it that way as I don't want to turn the water flow off for too long or am I just being overly worried? Now that I think about it i'll need to turn the flow off for a bit when I change the solution. hmmm

Ok folks don't seem to be getting much in the way of comments on my wee journal guess my grow isnt anything special really a well i'll continue to update anyways :(

Here are a couple of new pictures take today, again on my iPhone but I found my Finepix camera today so will get some batteries and get some better pics up tomorrow.

Noticed some odd dark patches on the one of the leafs which you really cant see in the pics but ill post better ones to show what I mean.

Can this possible be caused by the fan blowing directly on the leafs? Read somewhere that it could be nutrient burn as I changed my nutrients today as I didn't get a reply on my question as to how often I should change my nutrients in my 15 litre NFT system and possibly could have splashed a little nuts on when moving the NFT into place. I decided i'll just change it every time it uses almost half a tank I guess this should be fine unless anyone thinks differently.

Hi Folks,

Don't know if anyone is watching this but here are some better pictures of my plant for today.

I realised I didn't explain the strain of the seed. This seed is from a bag of mixed feminised seeds I got from somewhere, cant remember where to be honest.

Anyways I think the brown marking on the left leaves are definitely from nutrient burn as it doesn't seem to be getting any worse and the new leaves seem to be free of this. If anyone has any thoughts on this feel free to chip in.

Cant believe how quickly weed grows under lamps guess thats why its called weed!

I started to grow some mustard alongside my weed to feed my lizards and that has just started to sprout.

Anyways thanks for looking if you do.

Well it's day 21 and everything seems to be going well thanks to the help of some decent growers on RIO, you know who you are ;)

On monday the 15th of March I did a full tank change and started using VitaLink Grow nutrients as I was using Formulex to start with. This seems to have had a great effect on my plant and I got a burst of new growth.

I also started doing some gentle LST'ing which is so much easier than i thought it would be and this has caused lots of new growth points which i'm very happy about(thanks DoeEyed).

So far I have been a bit of a scaredy cat and haven't bothered topping my plant as I dont want to kill it and it seems to be doing fine with just the lst'ing.

I think if I hadn't done any LST'ing then the plant would be about a foot high so far but at the moment it still has quite a low profile which i'm happy about as it means more space for buds I believe.

I haven't updated my journal in a while as I was disheartened at the lack of response but I've decided to give it another go. Even if it gives a beginner out there the confidence to give growing a try if they have no experience like me then i've done something and it lets me look back at the progress i'm making.

I have attached some pictures from from the last week and a picture of my nutrients.

Mwaah Haaaa Haaaa I have found you! lol:hug: Don't feel bad - lots of journals on the forum, yours isn't the only one gets missed. Best way to have regular followers? Visit other people's journals, too - some of them will visit yours.

She's looking great, color is good, maybe showing a bit of overwatering again, but otherwise healthy. Good job!:peace:

Boo I see you!!! LOL Glad to see you here DoeEyed.

Yeh I still havent managed to get a new digital timer yet to control the nutrient flow but I got a new job so will be able to afford one soon.

I do follow a couple of other grows. They are a great read. I especially like the unusual ones like the fridge grow and the pc grows.

looking pretty good man.. I think ur using a bit too much nitrogen though, thats whats causing the leaves to be slightly clawed..
