I won't get into the how, but, I severely burned my hand (see Images 1, 2, below.)

The problem(s)
1. OSHA, my shop would be closed if I made a claim
2. DOT, they'd piss test all of my smoking buddies, when I came up dirty (I have to give an undiluted sample, in case there's already blood poisoning.) By smoking buddies, I mean the drivers.
3. That same dirty UA will get me fired.

or, it happened a different way. Nonetheless, I'm a mechanic, right hand dominant, and this is my right hand. Not good. I have Aflac, and the boss could lay me off because I can't perform my job.

Does Aflac piss test? This could seriously fuck up our lives, we're set to move in 45 days, and have budgeted the move out, with both of our checks.

Or, do you think I could just pop the blisters, put some antibiotic on it, and ride it out the next few weeks?

From what I recall Aflac will pay you while your off work... or so goes the commercial.. anyhow..
I was about 5 years old and racing go carts and my Dad tells me do not touch the exhaust pipes on the cart.. what did I do? I grabbed with both hands a tailpipe burned my hands nicely severe blisters like yours took about 2 weeks to heal

it's painful as hell it looks worse then it really is tho..

hope you heal quickly

Flamazine, gauze, and bandages.
Change your dressing everyday and keep it clean. Do not pop the blisters
because you will be more susceptible to infection.

Dude!

What? Everything else has been said already...

Im just speaking as a guy who has burnt his hand worse than that and my arm
elbow to wrist, both with oil.

Now that I went back and read the whole thread, I see I gave the same advice as the other good advice
but I gave a product name to use.

Sorry for giving good advice.

Misunderstanding I'm thinking, it was me making a lame attempt at humour and the fact, I personally had little to add which wasn't already posted :bigjoint:

You gave good advice. I gave the generic name of a drug, silver sulfadiazine, because Flamazine, Silvadene etc... are all trade names that vary by locale. For example Flamazine tells me you are UK or Canada (rarely OZ) :) right? So generic allows you not to tip your location and makes it translatable for anyone but you gave great advice.

It's always good to look for advice from multiple sources.

So, I haven't been to Doc. yet, and the recommended treatment is Rx only. Until I can get ahold of my doc at urgent care I've got non-petroleum based, antibiotic creams, sterile pads and fresh gauze for every wrapping. Wash it with cool water, and Zep antibiotic soap. I'm also having the boss lady splint my fingers out/apart so that if the blisters pop, the underlying skin doesn't start bonding. It also keeps the finger straight, so the hand doesn't curl during healing. I have kept it elevated, and as soon as it was burned (molten rubber, approximately 400 degrees, spilled while repairing a kettle) I rushed to the flush sink and ran cool water on it for 10 minutes. The rubber vulcanized and I used Water Jell Burn Jell to release the bond and then ran my hand under cool water for another 10 minutes.

Without poppin' the blisters (and, I won't, don't worry!) the only part that I can see went "full depth" was my thumb, the same spot as on my left hand, where I got a similar burn last year. The fingers are ugly but swollen with blisters, the depth on those are not that bad.

I can't drive our cars right now, they're both stick shift, but, I can drive a freightliner -- I can shift that with my elbow/forearm. I went in to work, yesterday, and was able to do about 60% of my job. Should be able to do at keast 80% by next week.

So, I'm going to smoke up, go to the doc (and tell her how I was making some fried egg rolls, and when I took one outta the pan, it fell and I instinctively caught it -- nasty oil burn,) get my cream, and then head to work, to fabricate a welding glove that moves trigger control to my pinky, and uses the splints to steady it.

Thank you all for the advice! I'll be intelligent and mostly follow it, this time!

No that won't cover this.... seriously you are talking reflex tests. They won't allow for this level of burn, if you have an intact dorsal horn loop. You spilled the oil (think dropped deep fat fryer and splash back) and couldn't get your hand back fast enough.... would be my story if for some reason I wasn't going to fess up.

VEREBAL BITCH SLAP ..............................SLAP UP BACK SIDE OF THE HEAD ...............GO TO THE HOSPITAL the longer u wait the worst damage can be done using those creams are a stop gap measure but over using them will just be a bigger issuse later

if u do not go soon any and all claims can be turned down since u did not seek medical treatment in a timly manner ( ie u could of done this on your off hours at home )

You not doing anything but harming yourself u dumb jackass ............casueing more pain then needed and limiting your choices do to the slow responce time for ways to cover your ass later with funding

i dis like doctors i hate hospitals but even my stuborn ass knows to go

at this point i do not know how long it has been but if u are over 72 hours u have complete lost your chance to cover your ass with the state workmen's comp ............u have to look out for yourself ..........not trust the system to do the right things (the system is a cheating lying bitch that will fight u the whole time)

Wicked burn.
Looks good. keep those pics to show your grand kids your not a pussy.
I burnt my hand like that on a space heater when I was young. Looked similar to that. I don't think you need a doctor. If i were in your shoes this is what I would do. Get a plastic container and fill it with hydrogen peroxide. soak your hand in it for at least 10 minutes. Take it out and rinse with water. do this 3 times a day, and the infection (redness) should begin to recede. your enemy is infection. hydrogen peroxide is the mother of all infection killers. and its cheap. People can call me crazy all day but I do this all the time, and magically never need a doctor. when your not soaking wrap the hand in Gauss, that will let it breath yet keep debris out of the burn.
My younger brother cut his knee open with a chain saw. I was a decent wound. inch long, and down to the bone.
5 bottles of hydrogen peroxide 2 hrs in a bathtub and some superglue and his knee is fine. kill the infection and your body will heal its self.
good luck man.

I wouldn't pop the blisters because it could get seriously infected.

C2G, thanks again for all the helpin' out!

Mojo... yeah... Dude.

That's pretty much what I said. "Dude! What the fuck!"

Elf ... a strong base bath for an extended amount of time one second and third degree burns (partial and full depth burns, for Ms. Medical Manners ;=) ) on skin that's regularly exposed to industrial stripping agents ... That's a bad idea.
