we tried out a new shop today! Third Coast horticulture on Burnet in Austin... wicked cool :D would recommend!
Looks like they're selling an ideology rather than common sense. For example, little do you know that mychorzzial fungi have no beneficial effect in pots, only in native soil that is void of those microbes.

To each his own though.

If you have a Sutherland's or perhaps check with other big box stores, you can buy vermiculite and perlite cheap. I just bought the big 4 c.f. bag of coarse vermiculite for under $20 on a 15% off 4th of July sale. They'll have another sale on Labor Day.

While all these hydro stores pricey, in Austex my preferred place is Bright Ideas. They do have the BLING shit (Canna/VanDezwan/etc.) they also carry dynagrow and other "budget" brands. For instance pH up (almost always potassium hydroxide) ranges from $5 a big bottle (and highest KOH concentration as well) to $16 for a small bottle (with lower KOH concentration). They also give cash discounts if you are a regular customer of %15 I believe.

I've yet to find a farm/tractor supply place near town that carries anything over quart bags of perlite :/, I will keep looking though.

The only thing I buy from the hydro store anymore is bio-weed, pots, and coir; and only because I can't find them anywhere else and don't feel like ordering them online.

yeah we just went to get some more coco coir and look around. we are starting to learn those places charge out the a$$ for.... not sure what for lol. and yeah i've heard that. the guy working was super cool and when i asked about bloom supplements and which he preferred, he gave us a few options but said he doesn't like to push any brand in particular bc everyone has their preferences. it was a lot less of a hard sell than other places we've been. this store (Third Coast) also sells used equipment and takes trades, which is pretty cool IMO for noobs like us who maybe don't wanna buy brand new stuff just to try it out. plus having someone face to face, instead of ordering shit online and dealing with shoddy customer service, is always nice if you run into basic problems with the equipment you purchase.

i got the same bag of 4 cu feet of perlite from the great outdoors for about $20 a week or two ago :D

The guy at the hydro shop in my area isn't as excited to see me as much as he used to be. I think he's realized I can say no and go in his shop knowing what I want and need, lol. He always tries to sell me something I don't need and if someone else is in the store, I get ignored, lol. I've seen him sell so much junk to the two wigger type guys that came in one day. The shop owner is very intelligent and I enjoy our conversations about religions, mythology, literature, philosophy, etc. AND I get to take my dog in, lol.

heh. my boyfriend is VERY useful in this area... we bought our fan and something else from the shop, but only bc my bf told him we were gonna buy online/on Amazon and the guy asked to see the specs. he ended up more or less price matching to one of the packages (or whatever) we found online for the fan and stuff, but we still bought our hood, bulbs, etc elsewhere bc the shop just couldn't come close, price-wise. they tried to sell us on the customer service aspect but honestly nobody is gonna take back broken/damaged/shitty equipment if you're a moron and broke it setting it up, regardless of where you bought it...

it seems wherever you discuss growing, there will always be plenty of people with loads of extremely important facts one simply MUST know... but i guess that's everywhere in life ;)
