Help needed - How many fans for a 600w air cooled reflector ???

Hi, I'm trying to set up my first grow in a grow tent. I'm using a 600w hps with an air cooled reflector. I'll also be using a 300w led for veg and supplemental lighting.

I'm wondering how to set up intake /outtake.

I was originally going to do an all led grow and just use a 6" fan for extraction and passive intake.

However now that I've decided to use hps with an air cooled reflector for my main light I'm not sure what I need to use - do I need additional fans or will the one 6" fan I have be enough.

Do I need separate fans to help with replacing the air in the tent or will air be replaced through the air cooled reflector?

I don't want the electricity bills to go up any more then they are already going to so using one fan would be ideal.

Can I still use passive intake?

If I'm supposed to use separate fans to the one I already have could I just use y ducts to split the tubing coming from the fan I already have instead? Its a very powerful fan.. more then enough for what I need.

If anyone could give me some advice I would be very grateful.

Thanks

Why are you using an HPS? Are you doing 12/12 from seed? You should be using a MH for veg and HPS for flower.

6" inline should be plenty

Hi, thanks for the reply.

Do you mean why am I using and LED?

I'm using hps to get the best yields possible for the space. I'm using LED because I was originally going to use just LED but then decided to use hps to get a better yield but thought I the led should still be sufficient for veg and will use less electricity.

And yes I know the 6" fan is enough I just don't know how to set it up.

If I use it attached to the air cooled reflector then will it still provide enough fresh air throughout the tent?

Or will the air just go straight through the reflector and not replace the air in the tent? (Which would mean I need another fan to replace the air in the tent..)

I hope that makes more sense.

Thanks

No, why are you using an HPS to veg. It tends to make vegetative plants stretch which is bad. You should use MH for veg then switch the lamp to HPS for flowering.

I get the feeling you don't understand the terminology for HID(High Intensity Discharge) lamps.

HPS is high pressure sodium
MH is metal halide
CMH is ceramic metal halide
MV is mercury vapor

All of which are HID lamps.

HPS is almost always used for flowering
MH is for vegetative stage
CMH can be used throughout the grow but it requires a magnetic ballast
MV lamps are almost never used for growing.

I'm using a powerplant aero wing relfector..

I figured it will probably be fine just having the ducting for intake and outtake on that.

But I don't want to start my grow and realise that the air isn't being replaced enough and therefore becoming stale and effecting the grow.

I want to at least be 100% the tent is set up properly before starting the grow.

Just attache a 6 inch fan to one side of your reflector. The hood will suck up enough air that passive replacement should be enough to have adequate air exchange in your space. Obviously you won't be using the hood for your LED veg time, but run the fan anyway to pull fresh air in.

Edit: 6 inch fan ducted to outside your space, lol.

No, you just misunderstood. I'm NOT using a HPS for veg... When I said 'I'm also using a 300w led for veg' I mean I'm using ONLY a LED for veg.
I am only using the hps for flower, I may may also use the LED in flower as supplemental lighting because it has settings for veg and bloom.
I've heard that decent leds can be good for trichrome production and also I want to grow a variety of plants so I'm not stuck with a small amount of strains. I figured the more light in flowering the better.

"what a moron' lmao. You have to start somewhere man I'm just looking for some advice.

I think some people have misunderstood the question a bit but whatever.

I've read that when using an air cooled reflector its best to have a separate fan for intake and outake, I was wondering if I could just use the one attached to it.

Sorry for asking a question, I also posted it in the newbie section because I thought it was kind of a stupid question.

I don't get why yiou wouldn't be a bit more encouraging.

By the way you worded your original post one would assume you were using the HPS for veg. When you say "also"(because the definition of also is "in addition") one would interpret that as you are using both LED and HPS for veg.

Yeah I know I worded the whole thing badly I was in a rush when I wrote it.

The caps lock shit wasn't supposed to sound angry or something lol I just wanted to make clear what I meant.

I read it twice carefully, lol.

a 6 inch vortex fan pushes 449 cfm. I don't know what size closet/room/tent you are growing in, but that will replace the air in a 4x43x7 area 4 times per minute.

Yeah the fans enough for the tent size. 140 x 140 x 200 cm tent.

I was just wondering whether the fan would adequately replace the air in the tent when hooked up to the air cooled reflector, or whether it would mainly be used to to cool the bulb and therefore not provided enough replacement air for the tent.

I thought that if most of the intake was just going straight through the reflector to cool the light then I may need another fan to keep the air inside the tent fresh.

But I'll be fine with just using the 6" on the reflector then? Thats what I was hoping for.

I have researched a lot of stuff, so assuming I don't know the different types of hid is a little patronising.

The only reason I'm confused over the intake with an air cooled reflector is because I decided to use a air cooled 600w hps instead of using all leds at the last minute before starting my grow.

Everything else I've researched pretty well, but thought as I've got everything for my grow now it would be quicker to come ask here to make sure I'm setting up the intake/outtake correctly instead of searching the net for answers. \

I wasn't expected to just be ridiculed for asking a question in the noob section, although I could have worded it better lol.
