Is this Fan loud?

Just want to know approximately how much noise this fan will make.
Will it make a lot of noise, loud as a hoover? or quiet

you have a better link m8?? if it's a can fan type of fan, yeah, it's going to be rather loud.. my fan was the loudest thing i added to my grow by far.. i even had to get a duct filter and a fan speed controller to bring the noise level down, which i managed to do by about 75% or so, and it's still pretty loud imo.. :D

Honestly, after buying and returning a handful of options, I'd say the best option is to expect any fan you get to be loud, and expect to have to do things externally to work with the sound and muffle it. The best option, by far, is to build a solid box and line it with foam and set the whole blower inside all sealed up, and combine that with either insulated ducting or a duct muffler, or both. On top of all that you can do fan controlling too, but fan controllers are a a bit of a challenge all their own... and it might not be necessary. It's better to insulate the crap out of your fan than to sacrifice CFM's...

Do we have a sticky on fan ratings, like in db? If not we should really start one. This is a problem I have been having, but I only use clip on fans and they are to loud for me. They just put out a bit of a drone, and I don't want to have to wedge my ass into the attic to install an exhaust fan. So all I do is tie off a 6" clip on fan to the roof underneath my DIY Wal-Mart style carbon filter. It doesn't work wonders but it works. I'd like to upgrade to some inline fans and real carbon filters eventually, but probably not where I'm living now.

Got one of these myself - http://www.growell.co.uk/futuretech-small-acoustic-fans.html - very very quiet even on the fastest setting. Practically silent on the slowest speed.

That actually looks real interesting. I'm fairly sure that's a 6" Max-Fan (the speed controller and the unit inside being visible gave it away) but it's been post-fit into something resembling a carbon filter, but I assume is more like a big duct muffler that goes AROUND the max-fan... which is pretty fucking ingenious, I must say. Probably a worthwhile investment if it works as well as it sounds like it does for you.

Sound is a pretty hard thing to judge by ear... everyone has different sensitivity levels... what's quiet to one person is not at all quiet to another.. it can be pretty disheartening when you buy a fan because someone says it's quieter than others and it still sounds like a jet plane to you, haha.

Still, I'm tempted, I'm gonna see if these futuretech acoustic fan deals are available on this side of the pond...

5" fan isn't going to be too loud, depending how you mount/ insulate/ duct it.
Lot quieter than a 12" desk fan.

hey friend, although fan controllers do work some they def dont take all the sound away, but i find that they are rather easiy and simple to work with, maybe i have a good one, why do you think that they are a challenge or pain? thanks

Well I was referring more to the leg work that CAN be involved in getting the right product. It's a matter of getting the right kind of controller to work with the right sort of fan... depending on what sort of fan you have, and what kind of motor it has, it's a bigger difficulty to get a controller that won't cause a hum at low speeds that's louder than the fan running at full blast. If one is planning to speed control, It's worth doing a lot of research before making a purchase of either a fan or a controller, imho.

as far as the commercially available fans I've seen, the max-fans are hands-down the quietest. They're also much smaller than a typical 6" (valuline, active-air, etc) The 6" also comes with a built-in controller which can cut down on sound even more.

The guy talking about making an insulated for box your fan knows what he's talking about. That's always an option. If you don't need all of your CFMs, a speed controller can also make a noticeable reduction in noise.

yes i understand what your saying, i think i may have just gotten lucky when i bought mine as ive literally left mine running for monthes on end at low med and high speed and had great results with it, although doesnt take away all of the sound it does take away some, the reason i ask is because its not the first time ive heard of fan control being a pain in the ass so i was just sort of wondering what more people thought of them, thanks for answering though :peace:

no experience with that brand, but my money is on it being loud.. i have an active air 4 inch like 185 cfm or so.. it's not so much that the fan is loud, it's more just the sucking sound of the air being moved more so i think..

I agree with this totally. I had a smaller fan of this type and it was 4 times louder than the one I have now which moves 4 times as much air. The old one I had had no masking of the air moving noise whatsoever.
