Its not non-sense. Again, you'll never get what I achieve in garbage soil. Pretty sure that is what I said. Whether you believe me or not, its the gospel. I can't believe anyone would try to convince someone that garbage soil with no additives will give you the same quality as great designer soil and nutrients. Again, its a weed, it grows everywhere, but if you think outdoor afgani in crap soil produces great weed, than keep smokin' it. You wish you knew what you were talking about. Again and again, garbage soil = garbage buds. I never said great weed can't be grown outdoors. My clear point is that if you walk into a forest and plop a seed in the ground and come back next year, it will be crap. Any plant that doesn't get the most off all it needs, all the time, will lack whatever you forgot. Soil is the foundation. Next you'll tell me I don't need ph stable water. Dozens of healthy plants in my grow prove what I say. Good luck and God speed.

thanks for the rep bro. I wish I had a spot to grow outside, it'd be a lot of fun I think. I don't want this argument to continue on my journal, please.

Update. I took some pics yesterday, all my girls really seem to be taking off. I haven't had to water since I transplanted, which is fine, but the fungus gnat population seems to have exploded and I don't really know what to do about it at this point. I have put up sticky traps and I swear not a single gnat has landed on one. I'm trying to let the soil dry out between waterings, but it is taking it's sweet time. Also, Lady 1 has some yellow spots on it's fan leaves. When I looked close I realized that each spot was actually a tiny hole in my leaves. Something is munching on them but I haven't spotted the culprit. Other than the bugs everything seems to be doing okay. Will probably do some more lst today, it's been a few days since I messed with them. Here's some pics

Let me know what you guys think. Any tips greatly appreciated. Will update again in a few days.

I went in my room before work today to train the girls and found some nice preflowers. Didn't have a chance to take pics but will tomorrow. Lady 3 is showing female. Lady 1 is looking like balls are bulging at each node. So I guess it's man 1 now. Will toss him out and probably pot up my best looking 12 12 plant.

Was thinking about it just now sitting on the couch and I think that maybe i'll try and clone plant three, which i know is a female, and put the clone in the 2 gal bag when i take out the dude. I just don't want to waste 2 gallons of soil. it's only had a plant in it for about a week. what do you guys think is a better idea, potting up a 12 12 seed or taking a clone of the female. i would wait until the 12 12 showed sex before potting up.

Well I pulled the males today. Down to one plant in the 2 gallon bag and 6 plants that are going 12 12 from seed. I'm going to keep training lady number three until real buds start to form and I'll leave her be. The 12 12 girls are doing well. One has stretched way above the others so I will top it. I may top aa couple plants, not sure yet. They look very sativa dom so they will probably have a long flowering period. Well see how topping wOrks with 12 12 grows.

I topped he tallest 12/12 plant this morning but didn't have time to snap a pic. I almost went ahead and topped all Of them but I decided not to. The back end of the razor caught the fan leaf stem a little but I think it will be ok. I'll try to take pics tomorrow morning before work, and then I can post them tomorrow night. Meanwhile the lady continues to look great.

So, I know I'm a few days late on this one, but I just wanted to comment on this part of your earlier post:

. . . I'm trying to let the soil dry out between waterings, but it is taking it's sweet time. . . .
That's what perlite is for, more than anything else. In nature, the drainage role is taken up by lots of sand and bits of gravel/rock, but perlite is better at that and it's pH neutral. So I would highly recommend adding some perlite to your soil mix going forward. You can get a gigantic bag for like $17 at Home Depot. Even though I go heavy on perlite, I expect that bag will last me a year or more for my small-scale grow op.

Anyhow, I'm subbed!

EDIT: I forgot to mention that with my ~ 5 gal of soil it is taking about 10 days for it to dry out, so I'm only watering once every 10 days. And that's with a mix that's about 30% perlite. So there's no harm in waiting a long time between waterings if that's what it takes to let it fully dry out!

Thanks man. I've been slacking on the updates because I was beginning to think no one was following. I didn't add any perlite to my mix because I only had the MG perlite at that time, but I knew I needed to get my soil mixed and my plants transplanted. The MG perlite has chemical nutes added so I decided it would be better to have no perlite than to have dirty perlite. I don't mind the long intervals between watering, I just want these gnats to go away and the moist soil doesn't help the issue. This morning before work my containers were starting to feel light, and I didn't see a single gnat flying around either. I decided to wait one more day to hopefully let larvae that may be in the soil dry out and die, but tomorrow I will finally water this plant for the first time in this container, 14 days after transplanting. But she looks amazing so I have no complaints.

Here's a post to get caught up to date. I haven't had a "real" entry in a minute.

I had to toss three of my 2 gallon plants because they were males. I'm left with one very pretty female plant. Here's some balls!...and some sexy female preflowers.
IMG_1953.jpgIMG_1958.jpgIMG_1962.jpgIMG_1954.jpg
these pics were taken on the 17th

After I could definitively identify the plants as males, I pulled them up. Are they worth running through some iso for some qwiso hash, or should I just toss em in the compost? Here's the group without the males on the 19th.

I don't know why the lighting is so bad in those two pics.

The solo cup girls are really stretching up. I think I am going to top all of them, or they will end up much taller than I want them to be. I will try to get four or six main colas like I did on my last plant. I will make some kind of mini tomato cage thing to keep the branches from spacing out too much, kinda like nugbucket, but I will only top one time because I'm already in 12-12 and the plants will start flowering very soon I'm sure. Here are some pics from the morning of the 22nd. If you zoom in on the first one you can see a red circle where I topped the stretchiest plant already, and a blue circle showing the nodes below growing in strongly only a two days later.

Nice idea. Looks pretty labor intensive though. I like it, will be interesting to see how they look when they finish up. I like training plants, almost makes you feel like a sculptor shaping it just right.

Ever tried a sCROG? Makes training easier imo. Subbed and +rep. Peace

Thanks man. It isn't too much work when you only have a handful of plants. With a large grow though, this wouldn't be very efficient. As for the scrog, I haven't tried it because I've been putting of making a screen, but I think it's the way to go honestly. As these new shoots keep growing in, I've realized I don't have a good way to spread them out. A scrog will fix that. I will probably wait another week and then pick 8-12 of the strongest shoots and cut off the rest. This is suggested in Mel Frank's "Marijuana Grower's Insider's Guide" except he does like 4-6 colas per plant.

Next I'm running some feminized ppp from nirvana and I wil definitely build a screen for that grow.

I've got an update of what's happened in the last two days, and then I will probably wait about a week for another update unless something goes wrong.

My 12-12 plants have been incredibly stretchy. They are the stretchiest plant's I've ever had, being almost a foot tall at four nodes. So on the 23rd I went in my grow room and it was off with their heads!
Before and After And the plant that was retopped and everybody's head!

The next day, I went in and decided I needed to do something to open up lady 3. She was getting too bushy and all the bud sites were getting crowded, and tucking the leaves behind other leaves wasn't working anymore. I realized that the sturdiest thing I had to tie the shoots down to was the plants main stem, and It seems to have worked out alright. If I can keep the shoots spread out I won't need to clip many off.

Well it's been a week and my largest female has really started to put on the bud. It seems like the 12-12 plants are starting to reach the concentrated soil mix at the bottom of the cups, and it is burning them pretty bad. I am going to pot them up, either to 2 gallon bags that I already have or to 3 gallon smart pots that are on their way in the mail. Hopefully they will show sex soon so I can only pot up the females. Will the concentrated mix delay flowering? Should I move them now anyways? Any help appreciated. I took daily pictures so I could see the plants' growth from day to day. Each picture looks the same as the one on either side of it, but the first and last pics are so drastically different. I'm really loving my lady! Here they are.

I also decided to try to clone one of the tops of the 12-12 plants, and that seems to have worked. And I have a plant that got a late start, her name is Laggy.

thanks slacker. The concentrated soil was really messing with the 12-12 girls and I decided they shouldn't be left in those cups any longer. I had just ordered smart pots but wasn't expecting them until about the 8th, and decided it would be better to get the girls into cool soil now rather than wait for the smart pots. So yesterday I put them in 2 gallon grow bags, and today at 9 in the morning the mail man knocked on my door and handed me 10 3 gallon root pouches. If I had only known haha. But o well, I still have Laggy in a solo cup. I might let her get a fabric pot when I pot her up in the next few days. I tossed the two most burnt up looking plants. I'm now down to Lady Number 3, Laggy, a clone in a styrofoam cup, and 3 12-12 girls. Still waiting for sex to show on the 12-12 plants, they look super sativa so I may still be looking at a 120 day grow.

It's also looking like I'm going to need to do some lst on these 12-12 plants or they will grow much taller than Lady #3, who is kind of my pride and joy right now. I don't want her to end up in the shade of her scraggly little sisters. And just for reference, Lady #3 is from one bag, the 12-12 girls are seeds from a different bag, and laggy is from yet another bag. Hopefully I get a variety of tasty fruits.

Grow is looking great! I've read up on your grow and thought I'd offer help with the gnats because I had the same problem. Those fungus gnats lay eggs in the soil and the larva eats the roots. Their lifespan is 7 days and in that time one gnat can lay 1000 eggs, nasty little fu*kers! Anyways, you can get rid of them completely and with no chemicals. Get a bag of washed playground sand at Lowes or Home Depot. (it's like $2 for a bag). Scoop out about 2" of soil and fill it in with sand. The gnats can't get through the sand to lay eggs thus eliminating the life cycle. Use the yellow sticky traps for adult gnats and always let your soil dry out. Hope that helps. I'll be following, your girls are looking good!

Thanks for checking out my grow man. The gnats have really died down, but if they come back I will use the sand. I have some leftover from filling up a basketball goal base. I had noticed the flies barely flew above the canopy, and they weren't going to the fly traps at all. I took them down and laid them on the floor of the room around the plants and they caught a lot more flies that way.
