DWC Scrog Throwdown Growdown 2011

Rayishungry: as white herb wrote....how did you manage 48g off a 400mh/400hps?!! Looking at 1g per kw or more realistically 0.8g per kw you should be getting 320-350g DRY with vegging for 6-7 weeks..(obviously more would yield more in soil, not so much in DWC).....did you veg for 3 weeks or something or 2?......baffled personally...maybe you have an airflow problem...
Bad genetics, had a mag/cal deficiency, and spider mites. All were pulled early to get rid of the mites so I could move the equipment to a cabinet and start growing name brand stuff. I was happy with what I got.

Spider mite is a bee-arch.... i've got 2 x 600s (mh) in 2 x 1.2x1.2x2.0 rooms...moving to hps soon hoping for 40-50z dry, above 50 would be a bonus. Hearing of your results made my balls shrink into my stomach :) glad there were reasons! Good luck with the next one!
It seems to me that although all these things help to increase yield and potency such as temperature, humidity, nute strength & frequency, water ph, water amount, light amount, light type, light direction etc etc etc....the most important thing (assuming you haven't botched up the other things totally) is AIR FLOW. For some reason with indoors the plants seem to like layered air flow...i.e. - it makes a difference (big difference) if the room outside your grow room has cool and flowing air almost as much as the room itself....this factor + CO2 (assuming you are a perfectionist like a lot of growers) seems to contribute to more of a relative percentage increase in yield above both FIM/top and scrog....food for thought!.....what i mean here is that from experience: peaking airflow and CO2 (not easy) in a room next to bad circulation and low CO2 will lead in up to a 60% increase in yield (all other things kept constant)...i.e. - a yield of 50z with bad airflow and low CO2 could be yielding you 80z....massive imo. In relation to this, well done FIM+scrog may increase yield by 20-25% (although some experienced growers say only 10-15%).
As always opinions differ, rayishungry do you have an opinion on this?...i.e. - your yield difference from airflow/CO2/FIM/scrog...?....this interests me greatly as I believe water amounts (I tend to very very slightly underwater mine) and airflow (i.e. - constant supply of fresh air and no stagnant air for too long) to be the key to relative success in yield amounts just as medium temperatures during flowering (70-75, not 80-85) and well-timed flushing is the key to the tastiest crop possible with given circumstances (along with curing properly and a host of other things in my opinion...). Again all these points are contentious but experience doesn't lie it just differs from person to person and environment to environment....

paradigm....Airflow is key. If using HID, you'll be burning your crops. People can get around it with CFLs, but you're not going to have a smaller yield. I have never used CO2 but BeaverHunter and I think WhoDat does with wicked results. It also allows for hotter temps (90+). I'm a fan of FIM, if growing straight up. With Scrog there is no need as each shoot is a "main" cola. I guess that's really all I got.

So tomorrow will be 4 weeks. Half way for Moby Dick. Looks super little for 28 days. But I did stress her with the water drying up, and she's the only one that made it. I did look up other Moby Dicks at this stage and they looked like pop corn nugs too. I'm hoping she packs on the weight in the next month. So Blue you are winning.
I'll be moving my Blue Chz clone in a month or so and start that going again.

I hope the results are good when they come, don't worry about the stress from underwatering, it happens in 90% of grows at least once....just give them long periods of unstressed time. I am a great advocate of this....it can be applied to trimming or scrog training: do little bits at a time but attempt not to keep extended periods of stress because the plant will flourish most productively during the hours of least stress (obviously this is only one factor of many).

that's the link to the best thread online about scrogging imho. Just happens to be on RIU ;)

The other thing is CO2.....forget buying systems, just take a trip to a supermarket and buy glucose and yeast. And specific measurement of each (depends on room size and how you are setting it up) giving chemical reaction of sugar and water (warm helps i will explain) and yeast = ethanol and CO2. You can find out quantities on various sites i.e. - some say 2 litres water for 2 cups of glucose and 2 teaspoons of yeast...this sort of ratio although there is a lot of differing advice about. Get an empty 2 litre bottle of water, heat some glucose to dissolve in water in a pan for example....when it is dissolved, let the mixture cool to a warm but not hot temperature a fair bit above room temp. and funnel the mixture into the 2 litre bottle...then add yeast and gently shake once or twice.....leave for 20 mins for chemical reaction and turn fans off in your tent while lights on for 20-40 mins (again a lot of different advice on times out there)....just as you put the fans off (not necessarily the extractor and air in but definitely oscillators and such) put the bottle(s) into room and leave until you come and check in 20-40 mins.....do not 'mist' your plants in this time or the still + moist air will not help for a couple of reasons... Then put fans back on and carry on. Leave the bottle(s) in the room and then after 2-5 days (again a lot of discussion about frequency) and do the same...shake the bottles and watch the fizz.....KEEP this fizz away from the plants for a few seconds...it is ethanol mainly....not good for your girls. Then fans off and leave for 20-40 mins etc.....
This process can be repeated for 2 weeks or so until the yeast runs out of glucose to feed off and then you can put more yeast (read up on further details or pm me). Anyway Ray this may all be old news that you have thought useless but please try it once with the same technique as before and tell me the babes don't come out a more beautiful green and the bud heavier and fruitier....(maybe i exaggerate here but they were undoubtedly much chunkier and heavier)..

What's that colouring on the Mobys, nute burn?....

Oh also if you are a fan of FIMming (yes I am too) then scrog can go hand in hand with this....such an undervalued technique...once again read the ridiculously long thread link above....I have advised woodsman, the thread starter, to write a book of scrogging based on the information and pictures on that thread....it is no short of epic.

Not really sure what's causing the burn, I'm just glad it's not spreading. 3 week and 4 week pictures look almost the same, just a few more shoots on wk 4.

Okay here are some new pics of my set up. I had to take some water out andmy PH was way too high so I hope I can snap two of them back. I know thecontainer has stuff in it, it was just so I could move the plants lol. I amworking on setting up my second container (Red) as my reservoir. I will probablydo that this weekend.

So is a U shape of straight screen better? Thoughts tips? WhoDat? And Blue that is some awesome stuff, and that's just 1 lady.
Sorry I missed this post ray,,, better late than never eh?

I dont think a U shaped scrog is better than a flat one,,, the U shape I ended up with wasn't really what I was going for lol I tried to get the 360 but I didnt veg long enough... Hopefully this current run with sour d will make it,, shes almost half way up atm :-)

Looking great dwc scroggers :-) I'll hopefully get some pics up tonight and will have a new dwc scrog grow to add to the mix in a few days... Ak this time :-)
