Smartpot/root/water question +++rep

I have 24" plants topped at the second true node entering their 8th week of veg and are about to go into flowering. They are in 4 gallon smart pots and those are in 1 inc deep plastic dishes. They quite quickly grew roots that poked out the bottom of the smart pots and I believe because the type of dish they aren't being exposed to light or air, The roots are protruding many inches in many places on many of the pots.

Do i need to prune these? am I watering improperly is there too much moisture in the bottom of the dish or pot? Do i need to raise the smart pot off the dish so that oxygen can get to the roots that come out? do I just leave them and this is nothing bad?

Any help or insight will be appreciated

Smart pots are designed to air prune your roots . u shouldn't have them pop out unless u have moisture under the pot .if there's water under the smart pots the roots will poke out to find it. empty the water and it will stop some people use smart pots to hold the main root ball and then put em on top of coco mats or hydroton to let the roots grow into.

Wow that was rude. I know some experienced growers that prefer smart pots over plastic containers. I also believe because of how they air prune that they r great for mother plants

i agree. use your ingenuity to save to some green
i.e. drill holes into a plastic pot then line pot with that landscaping paper that you lay down before you lay mulch
then vuala 3$ smart pot

Why? They're cheap, reusable, and save me my (valuable) time by not having to make them. I love Smart Pots, though to the best of my knowledge, there is no 4 gallon.

Yes they should be raised up so the bottom is also exposed to air, or at least a good portion of it.

Lmao at smart pots means your inexperienced. A friend in humboldt ive known 20 years grows commetcially in 100 lb harvests per cycle...uses nothing but 5 gal smart pots. Shrubs first (grower here look it up) has a phenomenal grow and uses nothing but 5 gal smart pots. Do your research before opening your mouth next time. Smart pots are excellent containers. Not that there arent alternatives that are good as well, but to say that he is inexperienced because he chose smart pots is just plain stupid. Theyre some of the best containers available man.

Pay no attention to pudscrubber as he is a Troll.
Smart pots are Great! Your only mistake was the dishes. I put my plants on a plastic pallet like those those used by Soda Companies. that way the roots are air pruned semitracally, and I never have to worry about salts/impurities being drawn back up into the plant.
Be careful as salts can build up. Be sure & clean smart pots well if you plan on using them again. use a little ClearX to dissolve the salts. Hope this helps in the future.

Dont listen to non sense middle84 smartpots/ geopots they are great and they work very well for mutilpul applications......Plastic round pots are the ones that SUCK......Grow some plants in plastic then do some in air pots then look at the roots afterwards and that will tell you all you need to know......

Has anyone used ROOTS root pots? I love em!!

I simply melt several small holes in my regular pots. (using a hot nail)

It works great, the roots get air as the air-circulation supply oxygen through these holes, and there is no water running out of the holes when I water.

It's probably not equally effective, but close enough to stop me from buying anything.
