They started to come up

Well last thurdays I was at the walmart and picked up a jiffy germination kit for like $2. I tossed a bunch of seeds in the pods that I had around. i did not germinate them like I normally would (Paper towel and pastic bag). I just placed them in the pods. Well I had them on my table for most of the weekend. I did not have any real lighting around and figured I would do it to see if they would even come up. Sitting yesterday afternoon I rememberd I had and old fish tank lamp that was supposed to be daylight. And I had a light over my washer machine in the basement. The one in the basement stated on the build (Cool white). So I figured I would give it a shot. I took my cooler which is all white inside and placed both the lights over the top on an 18 hour timer. Everything was completed yesterday around 6pm. I wake up this morning and this is what I have. So I'm a happy guy. Most of the seeds have germinated and the others I am able to see them starting just a little under the dirt so I can figure they all will germ. No its off to the depot to make 100% sure I buy the correct lights. :) :) :)

Looks good. I also thought i try out the jiffy pellets and must say they work. Make sure you get some pots along with your lighting. And dirt too. G'Luck:-)

Hank.

Ok I got the lights (40 inch warm white and cool white, 40 w fluorescent, thats the most I could get at the depot) and a fan. I also put in a thermometer. A couple of questions.

1) How hot should it be in the cooler? Right now the reading is about 65 degrees and the lights have only been on for a few minutes.

2) Water? Right now they are under the tent and it's producing condensation. Should I wait till they all come up before I water? Also how many times per day 3? I presume with a spray bottle. Also should I place nutts in the spray bottle or wait for them to grow a little more?

3) Fan. The fan I have is a little 7 inch and only 2 settings (low and high). It's currently moving air. I figure I should not have the fan directly pointing at them as it would be like gail force winds to the little guys. Does the placement look ok?

These are new pics.

They tend to hold onto alot of water, I lost a few batches in those jiffy pots. arethese the 'instant pots' that expand when you soak them? just be forewarned, they tend to hold onto water and the roots can't breathe right (mine didn't they all died; 8 plants) rockwool really is the best, but I guess you use what you can. get lights down no more than 2" away from top of plants. use a fan to strengthen stems no fertz for first 2 weeks, just water every 3-4 days DO NOT OVERWATER!
oh, and Congratulations! you are a new parent! have a blunt on me:joint:
treat your kiddies well, they'll return the favor:mrgreen:

how much lower does your temp go with the lights off? around 70 with lights on. no less than 65 with no lights. any colder stresses them, trust me, I'm growing in an UNHEATED basement. it's a constant struggle to keep them warm under fl's! lol (dehumidifier exhaust = 68 degrees so with a fan...)

I stopped at a couple of local garden places today and they did not have shit. Their excuse, "it's not he season for use to sell that stuff." I told them "If it's not the season, then why keep a garden shop open?" I got a funny look from the guy. I want the rockwool, if I can get it. There is a hyrdo shop here about 1 hour away and I'm going to head over torrow. I really don't want to hit them up as their prices are way out of line. But still can't get anything from the local places here yet. Maybe 1 or 2 months but then it would be to late. I'm going there over the next day or so. I have business tomorrow so I miight not be able to make it. But surely the next day. As I want to get them out of those pods ASAP. Yes they are the ones that are solid until you toss in about 3/4 cup of water.

The temp does not get to bad down there. The lowest I have seen it is around 60 degree, but I duct work has vents for the whole basement and I have had them closed as we don't really use it much for living space. But I could hang out there in a t-shirt and shorts if I wanted.

especially if you have a fan. too. it'll really lower the temp I'm also in an UNHEATED basement and am using my dehumidifiers exhaust (which is a balmy 68) channelled thru a box fan and blown onto my plants. it keeps them warm, dry and have a nice breeze acroos all the leaves

cool man good job so far sprouting those seeds. if you need to build heat try throwing in an incandescent light, I had to put just one in my old grow cab to raise the temps, it raised it like 7-11 degrees f

You should really have the lights on 24/0 at this stage so that would put you around 70 degrees which is fine, and the light should be no more than 3 inches away from your plants. Try and keep the soil moist, I use my finger and stick it in the soil and see if i need to add or not.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Very inspiring. The temp is now at 71 degrees. I think I'm going to let things sit over night. Everything seems to be going very well. They are all standing stright up and one more has started to come out. I found another store by me, well 30 minutes. But the prices look good. Not like the other store. Besides I know the town this one is in so it will be easy for me to find the place. I will be hitting it up tomorrow. lol Rescheduled my business appointment. Man I love having my own business, NO BOSS TO FIRE ME LOL. I have been watching the "I grow cronic" Video pretty much. I dont want to watch to many then get all confused with to many he says she says stuff. The I GROW video makes things pretty simple. Man I which I would have gotten the rock wool cubes. It would make transplanting so much easier. I'm wondering about these pelets, cause I don't want to grow in soil. So I'm wondering about transplanting them. Can I toss these babies in a large 4x4 rockwool ? or do they need to go in soil? One part of me is thinking of starting over with the rockwool. I have more seeds laying around that I have just kept in a box for the last two months. Never counted but if I had to guess I have about 100 so no biggy to start over. But on the other hand things are going well and I would like to take this to the next level. So do these pelets need to go in soil? I'm hitting up the store tomorrow and don't want to get something I dont need. Even though I will get the rock wool for future grows. Once again thanks for all the replies. Too bad I dont have any bud lol my supplier is in Aruba now on vacation lol. Must be fun with all that stuff on the news with that girl who was murdered. Oh well I wish I was with him. Im sure the weather is better lol.

I'm the idiot using dirt, but from what I've gathered, those jiffy pellets must go into dirt. but if they are biodegradable, shouldn't matter (to me) where you transplant them. hold off till some else posts w/ more info on that. you're good to go anyways, and if you started from baggie seeds, worse case; it only takes a few days to germinate again, if need be. If they are doing well, I'd hold off, you can always transplant into rockwool when they outgrow these pots! again I see no difference what you actually transplant them into since it is a new grow medium anyhow. it's just jiffy may lock up your roots before that. keep pics posted, everyone who looks in will offer advice. 'weed' out the best advice, watch videos as you need them, don't overload on them all at once. most of the people on here are way more experienced than me and given a day or two you'll soon have all the inf oyou'll ever need. but a pic or two helps.

forget everything I said about jiffy peat pots, watch this hour long video, don't worry the annoying music stops about 5 minutes in, then you can hear the guy. the voice sync screws up twice early in, but listen to everything he talks about, ok every time he mentions cloning, replace 'cloning' with 'seedlings' and you're on your way...after he is done talking at the end continue to watch, they show their entire grow setup, made my eyes water and my nipples hard (and I'm a GUY!)

TV Links - Divx

if you need to d/load and install the foxvideo patch to watch it this is definitely a must see for all growers

Just finished watching. Thanks for the link. I guess I am going to go with soil. After thinking about it, it seems cheaper and the results look good. The video put some of my questions to rest. Still have a couple of questions that I will need to have answered before I move forward. I'm going to need to need to transplate these babies in a couple of days so I will need to move fast. Well tomorrow it's off to the shop.

Ok woke up this morning and this is what I see. Should I be concerned? This is one of the 1st seedlings to sprout out. It's only on one othr seedling the rest look fine.

I figured I would toss and update on the plants with some photos. One thing I did was stop worrying about every little possible issue that I saw with the plants. There have been some frights but so far so good. Working on my cloning now. Once I get that done it's down hill :)
