I have two of those 250 CFM fans from Home depot. They are pretty quiet. The thing that really makes noise is the ducting that I have on it. If your ducting is pretty straight, it shouldn't make much noise.

i've found PC fans won't push much air unless you're running like 120mm fans at a full 12v and those will be louder than the average fan you use to cool yourself during summer

i have a 440 CFM and a 170 CFM fan and they both sound like jet engines, the 440 being louder.

I don't know of any quiet fans (you may have better luck) but some things i've heard that may work to quiet them down (haven't tried it but they sound reasonable):
- use rubber grommets/washers to mount the fan
- use bungie cords to mount the fan
- use straight through duct work rather than the corrugated/collapsable kind
- limit the amount of duct work the fan has to push/pull air through

yeah i was thinking of you using sheet metal duct but the 6 inch round kind. I am thinking that there has to be a air flow problem so I will try to figure it out.... thanks for the pointers... if anyone else has suggestions I am willing to take them

I searched this site for hours and couldn't get an answer I liked.. but I do like this site. I found this incredible thread here:

and a very nice candidate for the quietest inline fan being the

Panasonic Whisperline series.. available for the same cost as Vortex fans
