newbie needs help

hi everone i am looking to start my first grow 3-4 plants i need to know what kinda light or lights i will need to buy can i just use a 250-300 watt hps for this size of a grow and will i need any different lighting or will this work through all the stages of growth and how much will 3-4 plants produce during harvest

you can get a regular hps for $116 from that store online and they have good quality, or i think a switchable MH HPS is like $160


4 plants would be perfect for a 400 watt hps, i used 6 plants under my 400watt and got a pound harvest.

shoot for 100 watts per plant. and like panda said get a switchable ballast.

ok what light is best to use during the fist stage flouresents? or will my hps work or is mh better first i need to know what kinda nutrients am i going to be adding to my medium for the first stage and how do i know how far to keep the light away from the plants during the stages does it vary would love some help from an experienced grower to maybe i/m me to help me out
