Is this ballast any good/safe?

What do you mean 'Your Ballast Blew Up' Magnetic ballast are all basically the same and can't blow up. I don't know about the digital ones those as I haven't really used them. Either way nothing should ever blow up on you unless you have some crazy ass electrical issues going on. The difference from most magnetic ballast are just the housing that they are put in. Most of the parts inside are all made from only a couple companies with different housing. I would always get something that has a complete metal housing around the ballast in case something inside happens and the housing would stop anything from catching on fire to the outside. I have used magnetic ballast for decades now and never seen one even catch on fire.

Oh no it didn't actually blow up I just meant it gave in. It was very old and it was a hand down but thank you for the information.
 
Do a digital ballast, they are way more efficient use a little less power too. My lumatek boasts brighter lights faster ignition, blah,blah. Not too much more expensive, and run quiet as can be.

Pretty much 99% of the time it's the capacitor that fails. If you know some basic wiring you could open up the housing and just replace that part which would only cost $40 or so. Really there is no reason to rebuild the whole thing when it's a small part. Most of the Hydro Store will have them in stock too.
