Well First of all I would like to say thanks to you all for some great info. Im a complete newbie to this system and this site although I have lurked for awhile quietly learning. I would like to explain my current setup since this is my first shot at this, have always grown in soil mostly outdoors. A buddy of mine hooked me up with this system before i found this site but I was obviously making a few mistakes. Currently Im only running two plants (clones) both young but started under hydro with some root growth coming out of the net pots. I have a 18 gallon rubber maid tub with a 60 gallon pump running two three inch circle stones set in plastic (only thing I could find in town) I am getting good bubble action though and am thinking about adding another pump and two more stones. Plants went in yesterday and until today I had the net pots completely submerged in the solution, after reading this I lowered my level to about an inch below the net pots a couple of roots are close but not in the water yet. Im running under 400 watts HPS and my temp at plants is 78 and water is 67, my PH tonight with nutes is 6.5, Ive also got them under a dome right now, with a couple of 1/2 holes drilled in the top of the rubber maid lid for a little more humidity into the dome. From the sounds of it Ive got plenty of resevoir, maybe too much but I dont mind the expense of the extra nutrients, and am hoping to get mad root growth. Looking for quality not quantity of plants. Any advice would be greatly appreciated and thanks again for all the great advice.

Plug those holes, they let light into the res which you don't want. Add humidity under the dome by spraying water up on the underside of the dome several times a day. Otherwise sounds good.

Dropped my water down some more, I was getting water all the way to the top of the cups and the rock wool, was still soaked.

Another newbie question
I have heard that the limiting of root ball diameter will limit the adult size of the plant. So, in DWC, does extra room for the roots to grow out help the plant to grow larger or is that totally determined by the genetics and nutrients? Basically, will a plant grown in a 40 gal tote end up the same size as one grown in a 18 gal tote, given all other aspects are the same i.e., lights, nutes, temps, etc.

Plants generally have as much mass in roots as they have in foliage. Limiting rootspace will limit the size of a plant. But it can only use so much rootspace. A rule of thumb is one gallon of water for each small plant, 2 gals for each medium (3-4 ft) plant, and with 3 gals per pant you can grow trees. More than 3 gals per plant is pretty much wasted water and nutes IMO.

What I’m thinking is that with me being a newbie doing my first indoor, I'm leaning toward individual plants in their own 3 gal buckets. I’m thinking that if I do something stupid, I’ll only damage 1 plant if I stagger the watering and closely monitor the plants. Once I have a couple grows under my belt, I’ll go to the 18 gal totes. I’m just scared of killing the little ladies and would rather be safe than sorry.

Your nutrients should give you a measurement PER GALLON. So if it's 1 tsp of nutrient A per gallon and you have a 3 gallon setup then you're going to use 3 tsp of nutrient A in your 3 gallons of water. Make sense?

If using 5 gallon buckets. I would just fill your bucket with 3 gallons of water and add 1.5 Tablespoons of your nutrient. If want to give them to young plants you will want to just give them 1/4 strength nutes at first and work your way up to full strength. If your not careful your could burn your little ones.

Man yall need to do research on ROCKWOOL.LOL..
it is dangerous if your around it all day breating in the dusts its got in it...it contains a dust in it that can bring harmful shit(salt compounds if im ot mistakin) into the rez...Thats why they tell you to pre-soak it.
uh... actually they tell you to presoak it because it is alkaline and you need to soak it in a slightly acidic solution to get the ph within acceptable levels

Don't quote me on this but I think a while back RIU's severs went down and when they came backup there were a lot of people who lost there rep and status. I think some people lost all their threads as well. There have been some new threads started about it and they're a lot of people that aren't very happy.

What is the largest round air stone that is practical? I have seen 7 inch round X 1/2 thick ones and was wondering if they are worth the cost, would they work better, would they keep the nutes mixed better and if they would clog as badly?
I've tried EVERYTHING, including the expensive diffusers and the large stones such as the one you are referring to, but nothing has come close to being as good as these cheap ($5-$6) flexible air stones. They are 4 feet long and you can manipulate them to fit wherever you need them. http://www.hydroponics.net/i/134029
Only thing I have found is that they are a bit weak on the glue (had a couple leaking a bit). So I rip one tip off and glue it shut (put glue in it and clamp it shut with a clothes pin until it dries) and I run my own layer of glue around the edge of the other end (the side that you attach the hose to). Quick fix, problem solved and they work perfect! Best I have found and I have tried everything. 4 feet long and cheap too
