Goals with DWC

i'm just about to start growing with a dwc bucket that i purchased from a local hydroponics store. i bought the bucket with the intentions of growing a half a pound (dry weight of course) from one plant. or a half pound each for two. is this possible? how much light will i need? i was thinking a 400w conversion ballast with a metal halide bulb thats switchable for an hps come flowering time.

i was also wondering that since i have some fluorescent lights left from my last grow (which i didn't get much out of) if they would be acceptable and sifficient for the vegetative stage of growth. i have four 3 foot 6400K t5's that are supposed to be 3510 lumens a piece as well as a 42W 2700K spiral CFL that is supposed to be another 2700 lumens. all of that adds up to a total of 16740 lumens. is that enough?

my plan, eventually, as soon as the plant is a couple feet tall, was to build a box for it and surround it with the four t5's. one in each corner, and then have either the 42watt cfl, or and HID shining down from above.

is this a good plan? point out any errors, give me dimensions for a box, any help would be greatly appreciated. sorry to sound like such a n00b i just want to know if i should wait to start growing until after i spend money on lights or if i can get away with what i have any just buy a light for flowering in a few weeks.

also, i will be growing using purple kush. not sure how well it yields and if it is a suitable strain for reaching my goal of a half-pound per plant. i am open to any suggestions on the kind of strain and again, any advice will be appreciated!

Your goal for a first grow should be to learn as much as you can, much of it from your mistakes. The goal of a half pound from one plant is very unrealistic. There may be some gurus here who have done it indoors, but very few. As for the other questions, pay your dues and spend some time here reading. No-one is going to write you a long answer telling you everything you need to learn. Ask specific questions that show you are trying to do your own homework and you will get good answers.

okay maybe i gave a few too many unnecessary details i just want to know if i'm doing anything wrong, and i don't want to waste any time or money if i don't have to.

also, i thought my questions were pretty straight forward. they're mostly yes or no answers that leave room to include a little more additional advice if it was available.

annd your reply really didn't help me out at all. i thought the whole point in my posting a thread for others to see and reply to was so i didnt have to spend hours sifting through other threads and pointless posts where little to no good information is given (such as the ones left for me)

i want to know the lights and wattages i will need in order to grow one eight ounce plant with deep water culture. i've seen a 12 ounce plant grown with two 150w HPS lamps but i know the plant might not need ALL of that light throughout the entire vegetative state because it can only take in so much light when it is so big. i also know a 150w hps lamp gives off about 16000 lumens which is a little less than the setup i used on my first grow which yielded about an ounce and a half between two plants. but they were also grown in a soiless mix in 2 gallon pots and got a little nute burn here and there but hey we all learn from our mistakes.

what i'm trying to say is that if someone can get 12 ounces of bud from 32000 lumens then i should be able to get 8 ounces from 65000-70000 lumens provided i feed my plants and give them the room to grow, should i not? and i guess more specifically, how much light (lumens and/or watts and from what kid of bulb) would i need to veg a healthy plant that will accomodate that quantity of bud, and also will my current fluorescent setup be enough to suffice and for how long before i need and HID?

i feel as though i have already done enough homework and i still can't find an answer. i posted a thread up here because i thought someone with more experience than me might be able to help me out. i don't want to waste months of my life experimenting to see if it is do-able.

what i want is for someone to say, "yes! with a 2' x 2' enclosure covered in mylar your plant will be more than happy vegging with the cfl's provided it has the height to grow" or, "no, sorry you definately need to buy that HID lamp if you want results like that, just watch that you don't put it too close to the plant tops"

i've been looking around this site and tokecity for an answer to my question long before joining but i thought it would be better to sign up so i could have the ability to post a thread and get advice a little more directly. this is getting more than a little frustrating, and the seeds aren't even germinated yet.

i hope someone can help me. i hope someone has these 'good answers' that Illegal Smiles speaks of but does not offer.

i didn't take to kindly to the fact that you ASSUMED it was my first grow after i mentioned i had a previous one and that it was ASSUMED i hadn't spent any time around here reading, 'paying my dues'.

the most disturbing part is that now that it's been brought that i apparently haven't spent enough time on here reading, i've taken great effort to fix that but still it seems nobody has the knowledge required to answer me.

so, do you know anything beneficial for my situation, or are your mental archives reserved for the apparent 'rolling' that you teach?

how 'bout being a teacher and helping me out instead of trying to make me seem inferior because i haven't spent countless hours logged into this site reading and posting? or at least a little constructive criticism about how my questions weren't specific enough.

i've read a number of your posts for others and you were very helpful. how come i get the shit end of the stick? just because its my first day with an account? because you thought i had never grown before?

i thought this was a site for sharing knowledge :S

I have grown 7 grows in 3 years, harvested about 40 plants and I once harvested 7 ounces of dried manicured buds from one plant. It was a giant, with 13 stalks. I am now on my 8th grow and I am going to beat that record somehow. But it is difficult, I only average 3 ounces each from all the plants but I get a lot of plants that yield 4 or 5 ounces too.

That will work on a grow space 4 x 4 easily, and maybe a 5 x 5 space too.

That's more than enough. The sun provides 10,000 lumens to a 2 X 2 space, so you have enough there for a 3 x3 almost.

How much light is needed for growing?
Depends on the size of plant you are trying to grow. I'll try to answer this "in general" instead of being specific to one size plant. Light seen and perceived with the human eye is measured in Lumens. There is an ideal amount of lumens for growing and a minimum amount of required lumens. The very minimum amount of light required for smaller sized plants grown is around 3000 lumens per square foot. Let me put emphasis on "minimum amount" of light. However, that's not 100% exactly accurate, since although you may have a 10,000 lumen light, the amount of light that reaches the plant varies with the distance between the light and plants, and the reflectivity of the grow area. The ideal amount is somewhere around 7000-10,000 lumens per square foot for average sized plants. As long as the plants do not show burn, as much light can be used as you want to use. (Note, the sun produces about 10,000 lumens per square foot, on a sunny mid summer day). Contracy to "talk" you CAN have too much light.

Determining lumens for your grow area:
First determine the square footage of your area (example in a 4 foot by 4 foot area, there is 16 square feet, 2 by 2 feet is 4 Sq ft. ) If you have a 1000 Watt High Pressure Sodium Light Bulb, that produces approximately 107,000 lumens. Divide this by 16 (your square footage) 107,000 divided by 16 = 6687 lumens per square foot. So just divide the total amount of Lumens, by the total amount of square feet, and that's your lumens per square foot.
When given the choice of only one light, most marijuana growers will choose an HPS, High Pressure Sodium grow light over MH, Metal Halide, because HPS lights are more efficient (larger harvest).
You can't use a standard high pressure sodium bulb in a metal halide fixture, but you can use a metal halide bulb in a high pressure sodium fixture of the same wattage.
There are special hps bulbs that can be used in a mh fixture and vice-versa. But these conversion bulbs cost about double the price of a standard bulb.
With HID Lights:
A 250 watt fixture will supply enough light to cover a 2.5 foot by 2.5 foot grow area. (6 plants or less)
A 400 watt fixture will supply enough light to cover a 4 foot by 4 foot grow area. (12 plants or less)
A 600 watt fixture will supply enough light to cover a 5 foot by 5 foot grow area. (18 plants or less)
A 1000 watt fixture will supply enough light to cover a 6.5 foot by 6.5 foot grow area. (30 plants or less)

thank you very much for the information. as for the lower kelvin bulbs when it comes to flowering i am planning on getting a HPS no doubt my main wonder was if i needed the MH to get my plant large enough during veg. i have a couple of weeks to do a little but more research and make a decision but your input was greatly appreciated. have you heard much about or tried the dual arc hps bulbs? i've discussed it with friends and most seem to be of the opinion that it would be best to go with 2 smaller bulbs (one hps and one mh) in one fixture. i can never make up my mind about anything using just theory without proof or experience. are these dual arc lamps just a sub-par substitute for having the two different bulbs?

i'll definately be sure to check out those bucket growing links too.

Man you need to read the entire faq before you start growing,or follow someones grow that you are growing the sameway and get all answeres there or a book i suggest is the Growers bible by jorge cervantes.
Nobody is just gonna fall head first to help you.Youll get a lil advice but thats about it.

i'm sorry i really didn't think this was going to be a big deal. i thought i could just write down the lights i had and ask if that was sufficient. and i know with the number of lumens i have for veg that it shouldnt be a problem but due to the fact that ive never owned an HID i dont really know what to expect and if the overall intensity of the light really makes a difference, like whether less intense light coming from a larger surface area or more intense light coming from a smaller surface area with the same amount of lumens impacts the bud growth. i know the fluorescents give off some UVB with helps with crystal production but thats really the only difference i can think of.

i really can not find anything anywhere that explains what i would like to know thats why i hoped someone would be kind enough to just tell me. obviously after looking for so long without success i'm gonna be a little discouraged.

i don't want to think i'm right about something, then ivest hundreds of hard earned dollars and then only get like an ounce out of it. i would rather have most of it figured out and have someone go over it and give me a couple suggestions.

and unless i see a post about a 'single-shot' garden i don't know if there's much information here to be learned that can be of any benefit to me. bubbleponics sounds pretttty rad though

Yea bro i feel you 100% but the ostrich tryin to lead you wrong on this forum.RAT anyways to top that off. Youre not gonna get 8 ounces from 2 150's.......from one plant....I use 2 150's and barely got 4 oz from 4 plants... That IS super unrealistic. Use your CFL's and T5's/T12's for your veg, that's plenty fine, and use your HPS 150's for flowering....
What I would suggest is get another Res or two and plant a few plants. The male to female ratio is 50/50......you plant one seed hoping to get 8 z's you may just get a lot of pollen instead....
Run through my journal.....I've been there done that from start to finish~ see what I went through to get what I ended up with....but good luck regardless...
