Grow Journal #2

Hello again.

This will be my second grow journal. I have 2 setups. One of wich is a Stealth Rubbermaid grow using 2x 18gal tubs. And a DWC Hydroponic setup. The DWC setup is not complete, yet. My first grow turned out nicely though I did not get to enjoy it. My parents found my plant at about 4 foot tall. I took it to a friends to dry out and it ended up disappearing because another friend stole it. But anyways thats another story, it's time to grow some green.

#1 Rubbermaid Stealth Grow

This grow will be aimed towards growing undetectable. I used 3 fans, 6 light sockets (6x 26w cfl's). Both containers are bolted to each other. For my lights I use a timer. I also have installed a main on/off switch that will kill lights and fan. I have 2 exaust fans along the side and 1 intake vent at the bottom in the opposite corner of the box. I thought this would be the best way for aid to flow tho I did think about adding a 4th fan for intake at the top above the other intake fan to help the airflow a little bit.

The inside will later be lined with reflective wrapping paper (that shinny stuff at the dollar store). or painted all white.

#2 DWC Hydroponics Grow

This grow is intended to learn the basics of a hydroponics system, environment and how to maintain and run a system like this. Right now this is all I have. I still need to purchase my nutes, ph/tds meters. As well as my netted pots and growing medium. Any suggestion on nutes or how many plants this will support? ALso, is this enough air/to much? My pump is rated for 5-15gal but this is a 18gal container. Will this be a problem?

All feedback, questions or suggestions are welcome.

Questions:

The airstones in my DWC container have not been attached yet. Will this be enough air for them? Should I get more or use different ones? I filled it with water and tested it and it seems to have a nice stream of air bubbles. And as for attaching them to the bottom what is recommended? I have some 100% waterproof Gorilla Glue. Will this work? Should I use something else such as epoxy or something else?

And yes I know my Stealth grow is missing 2 bulbs. I will get those probably at walmart as soon as one of my seeds sprout. Should I add 1 more light directly over the plant as it grows tho or do you think this will be enough for it? Please don't refer me to growing guides. I have already looked at plenty of them and have already successfully grown before. I am just trying new setups with minor questions.

DWC Airflow:

This is a picture to show about how much air is being pumped into my tote. Will this be enough or is the picture not clear enough? Looking at it it doesn't look like TONS of bubbles are coming out but enough to were theres a constant flow more-so near the end with the air tubbing then anything else.

I am still waiting for my seed to sprout.. Hopefully within the next 2-4 days it should be sprouted. Im not sure if the rubbermaid box will give enough light tho with there being no lights directly above it.

It would also be possible to make a system that uses both methods. You could use 3 totes to grow 6 small plants in it through DWC tho the lights would be mounded differently.

Future Ideas:

  • Adding kool-aid to the water to give it a taste/color.
  • Test if food coloring would change colors or make taste horrible.
I have many things I would like to test but for this grow I will stick to the basics.

I just got another air pump because i was concerned there were not enough bubbles. So instead of a 5-15gal pump I got a 10-30gal one. If needed I will use both.

Also, I will be posting picture updates soon. I wanted to try and do a weekly update but I think I will start doing daily. So tonight I will be uploading some pictures. Feel free to ask how there doing tho. I am taking pictures daily at about 11:20 PM EST. Tho I did miss that last night and took it sometime very early this morning. I am already starting to see the first set of leaves. So-far it's looking healthy. I decided to use 24/7 lighting for now because the lights are in a fixed spot and I cannot get them any closer so I am hoping that the extra light will help. Also the room there in is slightly cold so I am hoping that helps balance my heating. In each pic I am trying to get a pic of my temps and hum to help track progress.

Updates:

Okay. I am back with some updates. Here are some pictures (not closeups). These are day 1 thru 5.

Day 1:
Just sprouting, not much to see here. Hum is a little low.

Day 2:
Hasn't opened up yet. Just starting to tho. It's reaching for the sun.

Day 3:
Starting to open up a bit. Looking good so-far. I hope this light is enough for it right now. It's on 24/7 right now missing 1 bulb tho. Will be picking that up tomorrow.

Day 4:
Growing it's first set of leaves. Getting kinda excited about now. Lets hope for a girl.

DWC Update:
I was playing with bubbles. I decided to get a new air pump with a bit more power. I picked up a 10-30gal air pump and that seemed to work much better.

Do you think those bubbles look any better? And I am trying to figure out if I can resize these damn pictures so there not taking up the whole screen.

Updates:

Okay. I am back with some updates. Here are some pictures (not closeups). Tis is day 5.

Day 5:
It snowed and the humidity dropped as the temperatures decrease. Bummer.

DWC Update:
Today I picked up 5x 6" netter pots. Will these work? Are they too big or to small? First time hydro grower. I would like to fit as many plants as I can in this setup. But this is a picture of my 6" pots already in place.

Any questions or suggestions, please post?

I really would like to hear your input on this? If this were you, how would you change things?

Hope to hear from you guys soon.

No one has anything to say about this so-far?

I am currently looking for clones to throw in my hydroponic system. If I can't find any then I will be taking clones from the stealth grow and growing them in the hydro system. I am germinating more seeds since the others I had didn't germinate. Lets see if we can get at least 1 female.

:weed: Til next time :weed:

Threw you some rep points. I'm a grow noob, so I have nothing constructive to add except encouragement! Have you thought about becoming an engineer? You seem to have some skillz! I thought I was being stealthy hiding my setup in the attic, but yours is super stealth! Good luck, man, I'm keeping an eye on this thread.

Thanks. As for being an engineer. I often enjoy designing things. Most of the time tho I am a reverse engineer. I like to find out how things work. I usually do my work on computers tho. But yeah this looks nice. I also have a hole drilled from my closet so I can have electric in there.. haha

Thanks for the rep+. Well feel free to ask questions and start discussions. I was really aiming for stealth in my first design. I got the idea from Jethro's grow he posted a few years back. It looked interesting so I am doing the same. The real object tho will be to learn how to clone and to grow with hydroponics.

I'll have to check out Jethro's setup. I love when stuff looks like other stuff. Rubbermaid bin? no. Hydroponic weed garden. Very secret agent.

What do you do on computers, reverse engineering-wise?

Just another way of calling myself a hacker. Basically I like to see how things work. I taught myself to program in Delphi and C++. Have you ever heard of game trainers? There like game sharks but for computers. I've helped make a few for several games. I love to find bugs and glitches. A few games actually ask for my help debugging things.

But yeah. Jethro's post is messed up now tho. The pictures are all removed from it.. =/ But yeah I like "hidding" things like that too. Tho light still shows out of it. My hydro system tho wil not be hidden. Verymuch out in open with a 150-250w HPS light oevr it. I am thinking of doing 2x 150w HPS lightsw side by side. Will this be good for a 10 plant hydro anyone? Or is it more effective to get better lgiths and just use 1? My space is shown in a few pictures in this thread. I can post more tho.

ah, got ya. I've always been interested in programming, but didn't really have the discipline/fascination to really teach it to myself.

I hear Google is always looking for people who know Python, and C++ is, of course, the shit. Do you use a text editor other than notepad?

Depends what operating system I am using. For linux I use gedit and for windows, yes, i use notepad. But thats only if the compiler is not in front of me. Otherwise I use those and just compile then make changes and compile again. Tweaking programs to work little at a time.

Updates:
Just a bit of growth. Still slowly growing. Temps reached 97F and 93F inside my box. I turned my lights off a bit and took the top off and had it air out a bit tho. I think I just need to put my A/C back in my room and kick it on to see if it helps. It does get hot fast in my closet unless my door is open. Then the light shines out super bright. Trying not to let my parents notice. I DO have a lock on my door tho but I am trying not to use it and make it look suspicious.

Day 8:
Just a bit of growth.

Day 9:
Starting to see the second set of leaves. Very tiny cant really see them from this picture yet.

Naw, I can just make them out in the top picture. Hello little leefs!

Is it that hot in your room, or just inside the box?
