Water Chiller Recommendations

What’s up growers? I experienced an equipment failure on my 2-1/2 HP Penguin Water Chiller yesterday. I’m looking to see what chillers people are running and looking for feedback. My Penguin chiller failed twice within about 4 months of actual run time, so that brand is out and I’d recommend to anyone and everyone to stay away from that company if you value your hard earned dollars and need reliable equipment.

Also if anybody has done some DIY Water Chiller setups or refrigerator conversions, please feel free to chime in. I have an extra mini-fridge that I may try converting until I get a proper solution sorted out. I’m going to need to cool approximately 5000 btu ( about 1500W) in a 25 gallon cooler/reservoir.

Thanks in advance for any help or ideas.

Depending on how big your res is and how you're designing it don't use the pump that comes with it get a bigger water pump like...

This was actually one of brands I was looking to get, but I’m not sure what size I would need. I’m thinking 1-1/2 HP to be safe, but it might be overkill. If I could get away with the 1/3 HP unit, I totally would. I just don’t want it to be under sized either.I have an external pump I was using for my chiller unit and I run a separate pump for my air handlers. Both pumps are submerged in a reservoir made using a 100L insulated cooler.

I’m trying to cool 1300W max of light, maybe 200W of fans including air handlers, maybe 800w+ of Dehu when fully going in a sealed 4x8 tent. The 2.5 HP chiller I had cooled it no problem, but didn’t have a variable speed compressor and cycled on and off all the time which is probably why the compressor died. That’s what I’m trying to avoid this time around.

Are you using a VEVO to cool a Rez?

Thanks for the links for the chiller and pump!

I have a lightly used 1/3HP Super from Tradewinds chillers

Kept my 120gal setup cold under a 640w and 720w light.

I'd let it go cheap since it's just sitting collecting dust for last 4 years.

I did a lot of research before I bought it and they are a solid unit well respected in the aquarium industry.

I’m doing the math on the total wattage BTU’s that I would need cooled and it’s closer to 7800 BTUs ( from about 2500W) that I would need to cool at full wattage in the tent. Which it would rarely ever be at full wattage, but I don’t want to run into any problems with underestimating the chilling needs. The VEVOR 1-1/2HP is rated for 3500W of cooling capacity, and is priced at about the same cost as two of the VEVOR 1/3 HP units. I appreciate the offer but I think I’m going to need more chilling capacity than the 1/3 HP’s have to offer.

Yep, sure am, and it's quiet and does the job flawlessly. It heats the water and keeps the water consistently chilled
