Ona Gel/HEPA/Carbon Scrubber for Apartment Grow

Hey everyone, I'm about 2 weeks into my apartment closet grow, and I'm starting to think about odor control. I've got 6 plants growing in an Aerogarden, and I've got a big HEPA filter running full blast right below it. You can definitely detect the bud when you get into the bedroom though, so I'm looking for a more effective solution, as the smell is only going to increase from here. What does everyone think of ONA? If I were to set up a carbon scrubber, where would I vent the air? Thanks!

You don't have to vent the air from a carbon scrubber, you can just run it in the room, blowing air outta the top and it works great.

For a cheaper method... DrVonDankenstine suggested getting some Downey Fabric Softener with Febreeze and making an evaporator bucket, basically a bucket with febreeze and water, with a fan on top, or a pump and airstone in the water.

Ona works, but the febreeze is much cheaper, you can use it in the same evaporator method... There are DIY threads on making the bucket take a look at them for ideas. :leaf:

That cheap method sounds intriguing, I wonder how long the Febreze and water would last before evaporating?

Just called up the hydroponics place, and they've got some ONA gel in stock, so I might just pick it up. Do I need to just open the container in the room or should I make some sort of fan/bucket system?

Brilliant Picasso, thanks for the link. I am going to be using an ozone based air purifier/ionizer, but I don't really know how well it is gonna work yet, I havn't tryed it out on weed smell. That bucket system is soooo simple I WILL be making one. That will solve another issue I was working on of how to vent everything. Its also way cheaper then the $150 air scrubbers!!

Careful with that ozone generator, you can burn your plants...

Ionizers create a lot of dust, that's how they work, charging dust particles, and the stick to shit.

Carbon filters are the best for odor control, it absorbs the smell instead of covering it up with more smell.

if you get the ona, get the kind that is a hard block, the ona gel i found evaporates alot faster, the solid ona lasts alot longer

Well I don't know about the ozone burning my plants, it is adjustable so I can turn it down to start and work up. Why would it burn them to have more o3 in the air? I don't think the ionizer will create dust, in my experiance with this machine in a regular home enviroment, it helps keep dust down. It ionizes the dust particles so that they fall to the ground, or stay on the ground.

The problem I have with carbon filters, is that they seem inconsistant, unless you buy a huge one. I have met several people that grow and have fairly small grows, and their carbon filters don't really fix the problem, they all resort to other methods as well.
They are also ungodly expensive for something that will only last a year.

I have another air purifier which incorperates a carbon filter. I am going to give this a try as well, I just don't know how long I'll have it, its for sale on ebay.

If non of the solutions wrok well enough then I'll have to break down and get a carbon filter. I just want to avoid spending the money if possible. The way I am gonna be running my vent on my light hood would also make it difficult to use a regular carbon filter, which is part of why I'm looking for other options. I also thought that Ona was an odor eliminator, not just a cover up. So the bucket system seems like it should help to remove the smell, not just cover it. My grow tent is going to be pretty much sealed except for the exhaust which will be pulled through the light, and out the ducting. It will then just have a passive intake anywhere the air can get in.

In my experience ONA works pretty well but makes your plants smell like ona.

I get the liquid and mix it with the soil moist crystals to slow release it. put it in a bucket with a fan on top.

Ozone will def burn your plants. It is a lung irritant and carcinogen. it should not be in the same room as your plants or in a room you hang out in a lot.

carbon scrubbers are cheaper than getting busted

get a carbon filter all this other stuff sucks. With the amount of time and money you would spend you could have just bought a real carbon filter.
If your gonna grow don't half ass it. Best money i spent on my grow was my carbon filter.:peace::blsmoke:

and capncash is right, ona and ozone really do damage your plants and could hurt you to. they only way that ozone will work effectively is if you have a large ozone generator attached to your exhaust and the air is being exhausted outside, but for an apartment this is not an option. And ona just sucks it kills odor yes, but your plants will smell like a public restroom:spew:

Yes in high concentrations ozone can be a lung irritant, but to my knowledge it is in no way a carcinogen. What I don't understand is why the ozone, which is just activated oxygen (o3) will hurt the plants.
