Being the nosey barsteward I am I went to check on the pollen-chuck I planted the other day and lo and behold see a head popping out, put it up to the light and what do I see? Something glimmering in the light so get the tweezers out and find 9 gnat larvae all positioned to eat the head off the seedling, dig them all out and line them up for the butane flame of death (dracarys). Hope there are none on the lower root as I didn't want to dig anymore for fear of disturbing the seedling.
I have seen this before years ago but never see anyone mention them, the things that lurk under the surface, if I wasn't diligent a few days from now I'd be wondering why my seed didn't surface or why it shrivelled up and died.
