I recently got a bag of ewc's and it was loaded with little brown mites that were shaped like miniature lady bugs, and what looked like spring tails. It was insane how many were in there. I didnt know if they were good or bad, so I dumped everything on a piece of wood and let it dry out until most everything had disappeared. Are they good bugs to have around, my research seemed very contradictory, I gave up after a few hours.

Once mine are a tiny bit bigger, I introduce a big oscillating fan. I like to keep the fan blowing straight at them, so between a good dry cycle and the constant wind storm, the gnats have a very hard time multiplying. They pop up from time to time, but the fan makes it way too hard for them to find each other and mingle lol This also makes for SUPER thick stalks. I'd rather live on the edge of windburn and end up with tree trunks than put chemicals in my soil. Not that I wouldn't if I had too. Which to answer your question, I personally would use neem oil when I water and/or a layer of sand over the top of the soil.
i introduce the fan literally from the beginning. looks like the BB took it better than the AB, deff got some windburn, if i can judge from the twisted growth, might be from the damn lamp falling on it actually lol anyway, i could see very few gnats, im not considering it as infestation so far. Yesterday i moved the girls outside permanently, I've lstd the shit out of the BB :D hopefully ill start seeing preflowers soon.

Back when I was a mechanic I had numerous old men come every spring and get the metal shavings off brake rotors. They said they mixed it up in the soil for tomatoes, and as it rusted it helped oxygenate the soil. I've never tried it, but your rusty metal addition reminded me. I might have to get some shavings off my bandsaw and give it a try on my tomatoes.
yeah man, ive never grew two same plants to try if it makes any difference having it or not, but i strongly believe that tomatoes and obviously cannabis plants likes it lol :D

Is it better to introduce the fan incrementally at first? My seedlings are about 13 days from seed. I put a fan on them for about 20 minutes last night, but I was worried about over stressing them. Should I increase fan time daily, or just let it rip?

well mate, as i said, i think it depends from plant to plant. im putting a fan blowing on mine from the very beginning, you should try yourself and see how the plants respond. if possible place your fan as far as you could, you really want to see the leaves just gently shaking, not rocking like there is a typhoon, if you know what i mean. im gonna look for something to send you to get a better picture.

i guess its time for update :D first pic Auto Bomb, 20 days old, sec pic Blueberry x somango, 19 days old. as you know, the ladies are now outdoors since sunday, done some lst on both. the AB took over well since the accident and today ive noticed preflowers on her. guess ive fucked it up and will be shortened with the yield, but it is what it is, as the ppl says. more careful next time. the BB is just B-E-A-utiful ! just love it! its on the sixth pair of branches as i can see lol. hopefully preflowers on her anytime soon, coz im starting to get a bit worried with how big she could get, she seems to be a bit more of a stretcher :D since the last update ive watered them once more each with GHE trio, full power as always, and the usual evening mist with 1.5ml/l of biobizz alg-a-mic. well, guess thats it, if you need to know more details, feel free to ask here or pm. ppp>>>:bigjoint::weed::peace:

 Years ago when I was looking into growing, I want to say I read somewhere that there were some flowering nutrients with good advertising that were basically just molasses. I think it was more for flowering, but I smoke a lot and memories get hazy/combined. I'm pretty sure it's great for mychorrizae fungus though.

Update: first 2 pics Auto bomb, 24 days old; sec 2 pics Blueberry x somango, 23 days old. The ladies are going good so far, some crazy ass wind here and today some rain as well, their first lol :D I've started to add 1 tea spoon of molasses/2L on every feeding with GHE trio. Preflowers all over the AB, just a few on the BB.
