Backyard 65Gal smartpot scrog

Being that weed is now legal in Canada, I have finally been able to plan a grow in my back yard. There are some laws I have to abide by, for one there is a height restriction of 4 ft, making growing a monster difficult if not impossible.

To get around this I have L.S.T'd the clones and I have chosen to scrog the plants. The initial nets will be 5x15 which will cover two plants, then it will be a 15x20' net come flowering.

I picked four 65gal smart pots, with a homemade a mix of; promix, compost, perlite, vermiculite, coco fiber, cow manure, goat manure, and mineral dust, which have been cooking for a month in the pots.

The strains I have are Shishkaberry, and a personal strain I call grape jam. grape jam is a Jamaican Sativa hybrid that was purple. I managed to take clones from it and these two will be second generation clones from last years plant. Here is a photo from my veg tent, and also from the Grape jam plant that I took clones from.

Is that purple your grape jam?If you ever let some of them beans go I sure would be interested in growing a few and try it out for it looks killer to me.

It is, I would love to cross it with GDP or something but havent found the right source yet... would be great to have some seeds for this pheno to Stabalize into a strain.

I did something similar a few summers ago, we don't have a 4' limit, ours just cant be seen from public areas (i.e. the street running past the house) so my 6' tall fence is my limiting factor. That seems like a lot, but it's really easy for plants to get 8' tall or bigger. I built a 4x12 scrog, we can get 30-40mph winds in the fall so I had to build it strong. Get ready to spend a lot of time on your hands and knees crawling around under there to feed and keep them trimmed, plan ahead for that.

It's a great system, as with everything how it goes depends a lot on the strains you grow, how long your season is, and how you plan on finishing them. I had to cover mine because of our fall rains and even hung a light in there to try and get the last plant to finish when the weather turned to crap in early October. How long is your grow season where you are?

You know, I was thinking about it some more, and if your total height limit is 4' then you're going to probably need to put your screen at about 2' above your soil line, because your colas are going to grow up through it. If your net is 15' across that will be an interesting work space.

I once grew an indoor scrog with a GG4 that I kept to about a foot above the soil level, she ended up around a half pound. But that was indoors, the sun tends to make them stretch like crazy. Even on this indoor I had to keep training it under the screen during the first couple of weeks of the stretch. I guess I've been growing mostly Sativa doms, I'd imagine Indica dominant hybrids would stay more compact. I'm looking forward to seeing how your grow goes!

Wow great plants! Gives me hope! I'm glad you mentioned net height as I was planning on putting the first net around the 1-2ft mark. My plants are hybrid and should be done early October at the latest and I'm in zone 5b.

Exciting day! Got the plants out and in the smart pots today. I took a pic of the two strains before they went outside, the grape jam is significantly larger, I believe I took those cuttings a week or to earlier.

I lst the plants and have one thats gone a bit mutant, excited to see how it turns out haha.

I hung the net roughly 2 feet and supported it with bambo poles and steel t-posts. Before transplanting I sprinkled promix mycorrhizae and gaia green veg fertilizer. I only put a small amount of the gaia, once it grows into the pot it wont need veg nutes. Once transplanted I watered from my rain barrel.

Nice setup you've got going.

From the closeup picture of your plants, it looks like you might have some thrips visiting. I like to spray using some liquid sulfur with a little pyrethrin in it to give them the hint to take a hike. Good luck.

I plan on foliar feeding with compost tea, im pretty sure that will help get rid of any pests, but it might also be powder mildew as my veg tent needs more ventilation. But thanks for the tip i will look into it for my tents!

So its been a rough few days for the plants. With a sudden cold snap and high winds i lost a major stem on one shishkaberry, if it doesnt improve ill replace it with a crown royal mother i want to get rid of.

Other than that the plants are rebounding well, starting to stretch into the netting.

I grow alot of other veggies during the summer and ill be trying pumpkin and watermelon growing on the ground around them... so yeah lol

Figured it wasnt worth waiting so i replaced the one shishkaberry with the crown royal, it was alot stiffer and some stems broke during initial training but its still twice the size of the other plants.

I have also planted a 5th plant, as per my prescription allowance, a space queen that i hope is female...

Also there is are 2 kinds of pumpkin and 2 pots of watermelon.

Its been quite cold for the beginning of june. I have fed the plants 2 cups of gaia green, it calls for 4 cups every 3-4 weeks but i prefer smaller feedings more often.

From the closeup picture of your plants, it looks like you might have some thrips visiting. I like to spray using some liquid sulfur with a little pyrethrin in it to give them the hint to take a hike. Good luck.

My tents will be empty soon, i am upgrading the air fans and filter in the veg tent as well as doing a full spray for mold and such. When i transplanted and took that photo i didnt notice any eggs or live insects so im still betting on dry mildew but, those plants are outside now and got a compost tea bath already.

I would take at least 3 clones and reverce one and that would give you a shit load of fem, beans then you could give me a few to try.lol

I had the same issue, the bugs usually go away and they just leave that white stuff behind. It's not molding you're good imo

Which province are you in? I thought the height limit (1 meter) was removed, never heard of any of the provinces putting it back in. There is however a 4 plant limit...

I'm looking into colloidal silver and putting a few clones out in the bush for seeds of my grape jam.

Jim, you actually schooled me in another thread about the height restriction being dropped. next year will be big tall plants haha

I've been waiting to foliar feed and water with compost tea but it has been too wet so far...

Its finally warm, and the plants are loving it. I have so far hit the plants with a compost tea and spread a full dose of Gaia green. I also keep an eye on them and trim excess fan leaves ad bottom. I don't know when to stop training them. never worked scrog outside before but I'm loving the results so far.
