Old World Genetics - DJ Short

No one owes DJ anything legally. That said, most owe him. Legally nothing but other than that many do owe him when smoking strains he made or contributed to.

I like him charging high prices for his seeds, I think he earned it. I paid $200 for some F13 recently. Do not know if it is any good till I smoke some.

Blueberry and the other related strains he has introduced are ubiquitous or everywhere. Omniscient. He got squat for it really but many breeders have not made much from some gems they came up with. The gems they introduced were made from heirlooms, bred by some forgotten souls long ago. Nothing for them either.

So if DJ Short bought some tomato seeds from Walmart, you believe if he saved seeds from some of the resultant tomatoes to be grown out later, he should send Walmart some money ?

DJ Short got squat for it? Do you think it's because when people send him $200 for a pack of seeds, he only keeps a couple of bucks and sends the rest to remote villages around the world where the genetics he used were originally cultivated? If you cut clones from your f13 and pollen chuck some crosses, will you be sending DJ Short a Christmas card stuffed with 50 dollar bills every year?

When do people stop "owing" for something they've already purchased ?

He should be free to charge any price he likes and you should be free to buy his seeds or not, but I'm not sure how that gives him ownership over the plant, clones or seeds you might get from the seeds you purchased from him. When does this debt get satisfied in your estimation? Did you buy or rent his seeds?

Good thing cannabis breeders aren't spraying their seeds with chemicals that make them sterile like other seed/plant companies do. I'll pay extra for that ;)

Push a guy so far and no telling what he'll do. There's got to be a nice balance where everyone wins. Great philosophy. If everyone doesn't win, then there's no sense to do the deal.

First time ever I'd agree with Rob. DJ had his moment and he could have capitalize on it better but he fucked up. No one owes he shit except props and his son is a wanker elite.

Nothing in Jd or Dj's new lines is anything like those original genetics going around in the late 90s early 2000. The new blueberry is not as flavorful and potency is no where near my old 3 phenos from 2002. The keeper of those three was insane good but like Pa-N said, shit was slow veg, mutant twisted leaves, it took weeks for clones to root, it was nutrient sensitive, extremely vulnerable to mites and it absolutely hated temps over 80f. In 90f temps it wouldn't put out shit for trichs and was like a totally different bunk ass plant.

I gifted cuts to friend while I was moving and those fuckers let them go because 1 because of mites and 1 because he couldn't get clones to root.

Dude did some honorable work bringing the blueberry to life but we are all standing on the shoulders of giants. We owe everything to those who came before us and few get credit for their contributions. As far as Dj goes I never seen or heard of him being an asshat or saying stupid shit on public forums but his son turned me off of everything from either one.

This is exactly what my mutant keeper of blueberry looked like. It was the 2nd real strain I ever ran and I actually thought it was normal to get plants that looked like the promo pics because of that pheno. If you tried finding this pheno again in dutch passion seeds you'd be disappointed, trust me I've tried. But I haven't seen any pics from Jd or Dj that looked similar either.

I'm on my third strain of recent offerings, ran The Wizard, Blueberry, and now Grape Krush throwback and everything has as been dank as could be asked of it.
ANyone hating needs to post photos or stfu :-P

Feeling like someone should be owed something and someone having legal recourse to go after you are not one n the same.

I think the general consensus at least for most is once it's bought and paid for it's public domain unless you can do something about it don't sell your gear if you don't want people working with it. I agree with this. I also agree with if you can protect your IP real property personal property you should do so any way you feel necessary.

Did DJ steal some of your peace of mind Rob? You act like it. Lots of disturbed folks here that self medicate. Your last post directed at me was a work of art though. Like that guy that splattered paint all over, Pollock.

No one owes anything to him but he made squat from the early days and did more than chuck pollen to make his strains. I like seeing work and skill rewarded and he has some coming.

My thoughts on "intellectual property" not being valid are independent of DJ Short. I don't know him or his kid. His apparent skills as a pot breeder have nothing to do with whether or not "intellectual property" is a thing or an invalid concept. Let's not confuse the two.

I think intellectual property is an oxymoron and an invalid concept. It is a legal construct, but many legal constructs have no basis in anything rational. Citing what is legal and leaping to the conclusion that it is also valid in the rational sense isn't something that I like to do.

If you like seeing work and skill rewarded, we probably agree there. I'm glad you liked my "work of art", feel free to use it anytime, since it's really just my ideas and not actual property that I would demand payment from you if you repeated the words.

I don't know any Pollock, sounds fishy to me.

Do you propose people continue to compensate DJ Short after they've given him the agreed to amount for his seeds? If so, how ?

DJ Short is a Hall of Fame cannabis breeder, so everyone in the canna world should know of him. Blueberry is a big enough contribution to the canna world imo.

Andrew Pollock is one of the best American artists ever and considered one of the best abstract artists ever. Hall of Fame artist that you should know about if you're into art.

I agree that seeds shouldn't be under intellectual property.

If you like your strain so much because it has a special terp or chemical in it and want to capitalize on it, then you should never release the seeds, cuts, or even bud. You'd have to grow the entire crop and then create your own concentrates/oil. Then you could patent your product. Other than that, or being Monsanto and using GMOs you can track using DNA testing, you can't really expect to control others from profiting off of the strain/seeds you made. It's just too difficult.

Nice looking bud! I grew (really just set up the grow and coached) out the old Blueberry back in 2001, brought back the seeds from Amsterdam and set up a friends stairway to grow the 3 females that came from the pack. Didn't look like this, maybe a little blue tinge to the buds, but my friends still say to this day that it was the best bud they ever smoked. Smelled and tasted just like blueberries.

I'm growing the New Berry right now and have a few cuts that are in flower. This #1 plant smells just like blueberry, and immediately brought me back to the old blueberry smells from the original Blueberry strain. Pretty awesome! She's at 48 days today (pic is from last week) and probably needs another 2 weeks I'm guessing. There was a nanner that showed up on the cola around week 3 but I plucked it a few days ago.
Here's a pic of the nanner. Also notice the weird "clawing down" like leaves. Never seen this before and it's the only plant doing it. Perhaps a bigger pot will help for next time? You can't see everything flowering in these little pots but it's a good indication of what you'll get with flower.

I'm glad we agree that seeds shouldn't be under intellectual property.
The term "Intellectual property" is kind of an oxymoron.

It implies that a given individual piece of property which is a physical and unique thing is the same as an idea, (intellectual) which can be held by multiple people at once. Not the same.

I also agree with you that DJ Short has a fine reputation (never met him) and seems to know his shit, but that has nothing to do with whether I would owe him or his kid money if I made seeds from something he made seeds from.

Also, did you mean Andrew PollAck rather than Pollock ?

And yes, it could be spelled Pollack. Don't care enough to look it up, but yes, I believe that's who Yesum was referring to. Glad to help explain that to you and point it out :)
