First time. Am I ready for flower?

Background:
We are first time growers, keeping it simple with a low-tech closet grow. We wanted to try a grow before we really got invested. The ultimate goal is to have a perpetual grow just to support our own usage, while still keeping things relatively simple. We've been kind of learning as we go, though we did do a lot of research ahead of time to have a general idea.

Setup:
Our closet space is about 3x3. We opted not to tent it (again, keeping it simple/low-tech). We started with a single T5HO 8 bulb 2' fixture, but decided that 2 would be better. Bulbs are all 6500k. If we are to believe the ratings on the fixtures, that is 40,000 lumens (though I think it's probably closer to 32,000). I keep the lights just an inch or two above the screen (I raise them up to work on the plants). So I think we're about in the mid-range for lights. We are running on an 18-hour timer. I ran a vent with a fan up and out of the closet to the attic and filter it out to open air. We have ample air flow within the closet provided by fans. I set up a screen for scrog'ing (though I didn't fully implement it properly with this grow). We have a clone box in another location to root and keep the next round of plants ready.

Plants:
We ordered some "Papaya" Nirvana seeds and sprouted a seed. The first one was slow and struggling so we planted a second one. We now have two plants. They had a rough start while I tried to figure out the watering and setup. We also had a minor root gnat and spider mite issue that I had to take care of. 1st seed (white bucket) was sprouted on 8/24 and the 2nd seed (orange bucket) was sprouted on 10/18. I finally got everything figured out, the pests taken care of, and growth took off to the point I could officially call them in "veg" mode on 11/18. That is the point I topped them and started my attempt at manifolding and scrog'ing.

The plants are both in 5 gallon buckets using Dr. Earth All Purpose Potting Mix (not ideal, but it's what we had). They both get 1/2 gallon of tap water every other day. The mid-week watering they get fertilized with 20-20-20 (we'll be switching to Dyna-Gro on the next round). On non-watering days, they get pruned a little bit at a time to remove lower leaves and shoots. I check and tuck as needed every day (pics are from today, before tucking). I've never done a pH test, or any other soil/water test for that matter. I just go by the look of the plant, what I have learned over the past few months, and what I know about other traditional gardening. Overall, I think the plants look very good. Could be better/faster, sure, but for a simple and low-tech grow I don't think I see any problems.

Today:
Fast-forward to today and we are 2 months in to the veg cycle. The screen is pretty much filled up directly under the lights (the grid outside of the lights is still open). We are contemplating if we are ready to switch to a 12-12 and start the process of flowering. I know there will be a stretch. In all of the research I have done, however, I can't seem to figure out if we should use the stretch to fill the remainder of the grid or if we do that while still in veg. To my untrained eye, the plants seem healthy enough to go to flower, but I just don't have that experience yet. There is still some vegetation under the screen that needs to be removed, but again, I don't know if that should be done in the veg stage or during the stretch of flowering.

So long story short, do you think these plants are ready for flowering?

it is ready for flowerig anytime you want. plant is sexual mature and ready on natures time when you can see preflowers and alternating branch hard to tell from picture. question is more like if you are ready for flowering because after two months they should define have preflower

Those 6500k bulbs will work in flower... to a degree, but you better off replacing them to 2700k bulbs for flower. At two months they should be sexually mature enough to flower, but I would fill the screens a little more to the outside. Can you raise your lights up higher just in case you have to? But overall, you looking good for your first time. If you plan on doing this again in the future I would look into getting some Mega Crop. It's a one part nutrient tht's designed for cannabis plants.

Ok, so how do I tell what a pre-flower is? I don’t recall ever seeing anything about that in my research. I am sure I have seen them but didn’t know it.

As for the lights, absolutely I can raise them. I have it set up to where I can raise/lower them in 1/4” increments all the way up to the ceiling. I am guessing that by raising them some, it will get a bit more “leggy” to help fill the screen?

I will also look in to buying some 2700k bulbs and Mega Crop but that may be for the next round.

For pre-flowers they can usually be found right at the base of the side branches. Just a single bract with a couple fuzzy white hairs sticking out says it's a girl like @blake9999 just posted you a nice picture of. Stealing that one blake to add to my collection of instructional images!

When using fluoros for growing I like to mix them up a bit for a better spectrum. In veg I'll run 1 - 2700K for every 2 - 6500K and the reverse for flowering tho I haven't flowered under fluoros for many years.

Lots of good info in this link.

I found a great spot to download FREE POT BOOKS. I downloaded a grow bible first and got lots more. Books look great and complete like the real ones I have here. No web site but just a page of links. Just right click on what you want and then "Save Link As" to download so they don't open first as some are 50+ megs. They got lots. Enjoy.

Males always have balls. Lol.

Also nice stress training done on those. I would wait 1-2 more weeks before flowering. Increases harvest for you.

Perfect, thank you all for that information. I went in and took a closer look at the plants. I ‘THINK’ I am seeing preflowers, but my eyes aren’t what they used to be so it is hard to focus on something that small. I have attached the best photos I could manage to take.

I also went ahead and raised the lights 2-3 inches. I will watch and see how they react. I think we have decided to wait at least one more week before making the switch. I am going to order at least a few 2700k bulbs in the meantime. I will post back next weekend with the progress and see what you guys think.

the preflower is what me and friends used to call “seed pods” on dried buds. when plant is flowering they swell right up and look awesome. exactly google has many picture of preflower. you can always tell male from female without worry about seeds if you veg until you see preflower they usually show around 4-6 weeks many people never see them because they go to flower before they show preflowerp

Not sure if this is right place to ask this lol?
First week of flower( strawberry cough ) leaves seem a bit droopy fed with general today approx 1 hr ago- maybe light to close 30 cm ?
if light was too close wouldn't they perk up and taco? that is what i've experienced at least. first the edges will get raised then the whole leaf starts to point to the sky and starting to taco. when i bring my plants from inside to veg to outside to flower in my current flowering grow that is what they did. the sun and outside temps are hotter then what i get in my house but due to the massive air exchange it feels opposite. in my house temps read cooler then outside normally but feels extremely hot.

could it possibly be from over watering? either over watering or under watering?

that is my blue widows in about 4 weeks i believe since flip. have yet to experience droopy leaves but i do water like every 3-5 days. since it is an outdoor grow and my grandpa likes to water my plants as well so i literally need to water ASAP and check weather daily.
