I trying to veg with my 630 de cmh @ five and half foot to six foot. I’m thinking it’s too much and it’s throwing so much light down I might have to put one of my smaller leds in to veg for a bit longer. These things are insane. My test room is 8x8 and it’s just stupid bright in there temps are 77-80 though with no ac just exhaust and a fan.
For sure dude. No matter how high I mount my 630. I still se better results with just a 315w cmh with 4200k bulb

I have my 315 in a 3x3 tent at about 4’ for my 2-3 week old veg plants. Just like I would have a 400w Metal halide.

It’s even a bit much maybe still at 4’. Mature flowers end up at about 18”.
I usually veg with my 315w at about 24 - 36 inches. Which is plenty of light still. Sinxe penetration isny needed and more spread is I can do my entire 5x5 tent with 1 315w cmh

I found the 315 dissapointing when I ran the single lamp in my open flower room. The 600 Hortilux hps blows it away as it should at twice the wattage.

But in the secret jardin 3x3 with the nice reflective insides it is quite powerful. lol actually wish I had a 4x4 for it instead.

Using the phillips 3100k this is day 16 from seed sprout. Had some heat stress issues even. Some fan adjusting took care of it.

They were transplanted from party cups on day 11. I think they are at least a week ahead in growth compared to the t-5 fluorescents I used before in there in the same time.

Any reason you chose to mix 315 and super hps over a 630 CMH?

Simple. I already had 2 air cooled blockbusters with 600’s running perpetually.

I see growers house is selling sun system stuff with free shipping. All in one 315’s with the better custom reflector and the Phillips built in ballast for 370 shipped.

I may be trying multiple 315’s sooner than I thought. Still looks like $600 for good pre built led.

I put up one of my leds for vegging purposes until these plants get a bit bigger. I did however order myself a 315 this afternoon for next grow.

Nice set up by the way man very clean and functional I think your going to do just fine. You just keep me posted on your grow I'm always intrigued with other cmh growers. Curious to see how the mixture of fast vegging and quick maturing characteristics from cmh lights pair up with the faster growth and higher yielding medium of hydro or rockwood cubes. Im a Soil grower myself. Mainly because I grow for my personal use. SO quality is my absolute first and foremost. So much that if I'm not satisfied with a plant, i wony even bother trimming it. I just fine it up into shake for butter or what the eff ever. If it's not top shelf I'm not wasting another lungful if I can help it lol Just remember 30" max from canopy in flower. If you see some color Changing on top of the plants dont freak out. It's pretty common to see purples blues and red hues with cmh. But if you see bright yellow or any signs of bleaching bring it up to 36" and see if that helps
Right on man, appreciate all the advice from you and the other fellow growers. I went with the Cmh because I heard nothing but good stuff, but It's been over 10 years since I've grown and I feel lost at times, my 1st set up was a 7x8x8 room I built in my garage with 1000w Hps, recirculating drip 6" rockwool in a 4x4 tray, 4 trainwrecks (Original clone only) and 5 skunk #1's. Height wasn't an issue, I vegged with the 1000w Hps with no problem and harvested 1.75 pounds. But now I'm using a 5x5x80 grow tent and there seems to be a lot more involved (temperature wise) and using the Cmh is a lot different from Hps. I raised the tent 12" high off the floor on a platform and the grow tray stand is 16" high off the floor of the tent so that I get proper drainage outside the tent to my reservoir. Right now my light is as high as it can go and I have exactly 38" between the light and the top of the plants. It's been 7 days since I started the grow and my plants have grown 4". I'll attach some photos of one of the clones from day 1, 4, and 7. Also here's the link for my grow journal I started on RUI.

It’s literally too much light for the little guys. I had to snatch my cmh out of my room yesterday in order for them to recover and get a bit bigger. I had mine up to 5 1/2 ft then 6 ft from the top of the plant. No heat issues it was just too much light for them. Now I’m going to be behind probably a week but that’s why I built this room it allows me to experiment without affecting my mine grow. What’s worse my cmh is a DE rather than the single ended ones most ppl I see are using.

Probably because the 315w lights were really designed for supplemental for hps and vegging as stand alone light. The 315w dont have enough power to penetrate in flower. Which is why its recommended to use a 630w cmh for flower. My first try with it I yielded 700 grams only filling 2/3 of my 5x5. Slight learning curve to using the lights as well. You dont need to slam the hood as close to the canopy as possible. You get better results having it set to about 3 or 4 feet above canopy.

Exactly! 630s are to strong to veg with. The 315w cmh are perfect veg lights. I can put mine 5 ft above canopy and veg an entire 5x5 tent

Imo these 630's easily stomp a 1000 HPS an as for 630DE WOW is all I can say. They curb stomp a 1000 to hell. I've been at to veg this same space same height with a 1000 watt hood albeit it was some years ago. I need to get myself a new par meter so I can get some readings off of this.

How close can you keep your lights to canopy? My plants sit on a tray and usually by EOG I only have about 18” currently. But my lights are air cooled

Unusually 20-24 for 315w N 36-40 inches with my 630s both are open hoods. I personslly wouldnt use a air cooled hood sinxe one of the biggest benefits of cmh is it high uv output and using cool hood would reduce that output

Thanks for the response. The fixture I’m lookin at is a growers choice like one from Alilbaba so it’s open fixture. You think 2 over a 3x6 in my 4x8 tray is too much light? I still have yet to see a fixture in person. But the units I’m looking at are dimmable

We talking 2 - 315s or 2 630s? ...if 2 315s..i think you will be sitting good with light. I would shoot for 3 - 315s if possible. With rectangular footprints i feel like its justified to use the 315s and sacarfice some intensity / penetration for better even coverage when working with any foot print thats not square or have at least 4ft in width and length or more. The 315s cover a 3x3 pretty well. So having 2 in a 6x3 will do pretty well. But even better with 3 - 315s. I feel like 630 might be to intense since theres only 3 ft in width

I have been planning to use 3 315’s over a 3.5’ x 7’ area when I replace my hps finally. They have been running same ballast and reflectors over 4 years. Inline and circulation fans too.

Gotta couch for sun system reflectors and Galaxy ballasts and hyper fans after like 4.5 years with no issues. Still all works fine.
