Advice on HPS kit purchase.

So I've made the decision to buy a HPS/HID light kit. For when I switch my plants to flower in about a week.
Spend limit: $150AUD
I know I'm going to need a 600W bulb for my 3.5x3.5ft scrog. Just wanted advice on what to get and where to get it. I've had a bit of a look and found this,
https://aquagardening.com.au/hps-grow-light-kit-600w
It's a little over my price range although they offer afterpay.

Well, 150 AUD is only 110 U.S. Dollars. The light you have linked there is 170 dollars U.S.

I'm not sure what your import taxes are on something like that, but here is a bare bones 600 watt system for 131 dollars U.S.:
https://www.amazon.com/iPower-Digital-Dimmable-System-Reflector/dp/B00CQ8ROYO/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1535460300&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=600+watt+mh+hps&psc=1

You can also get that in a 400 watt version for 117 dollars, which is right at your budget limit:
https://www.amazon.com/iPower-Digital-Dimmable-System-Reflector/dp/B00CQ9BPC0/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1535460300&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=600+watt+mh+hps&th=1

A 400 watt system will do a 3 x 3 area nicely. That extra half foot would still be OK, just not absolutely prime.

Why would an Australian website have USD prices?

Thank you for other links I'll have a look

I like the magnetic ballasts. That's a good setup. I run 600 in a 4' X 4'.

This is from walmart and I think you are in AU.
Just an example of a 600w with a glass covered hood for $155 incudes a cheap bulb..
Might be a better choice vs the open reflector.
You need an inline fan to ventilate it but you will have less heat hitting the canopy.
Just something to consider when deciding.

Although I don't use HID, my neighbors grow is a constant battle for her to keep temps under control. Using a vented hood/extraction system goes a long way toward fixing that problem .
100% agree. Air cooled reflectors should be a priority purchase for HID users. It is easier on you and the plants. Buy one before spending money on shit like Big Bud or Tarantula Juice.

If you just have 3.5ft x 3.5ft, I'd go with a 315w cmh. I just got one today to replace my 400w hps in a 3ft x 3ft tent. The 315w will be much easier to keep cool and will do well in that space.

Actually I just tried looking for a cheap cmh setup in AU but I tend to forget just how spoiled we are here in the states with access to consumer products.

I think this place ships internationally but it cost me $20 shipping here in the states so overseas I figured triple that price.

My current top temps outside are 18'C with lows at night being down to 4'C. Because of this during most of the day I have a heater in the tent running till 25'C and off till 20'C.
Would those cold temps counter the heat you guys are talking about from the hps. And then I could just buy a hood in a couple of months when temps are back up again?

My main question is, is the hood a must in a 1.4x1.4x1.8m tent.

If so I found this:

If possible schedule the time that your lights are on during the coldest part of the day

yeah but your running more watts, and i do belive the intensity is not as high causing the light to be less strong? bigger yields from magnetic? correct me if im wrong
That I'm not sure of honestly . Magnetic are heavy as hell and can get hot. Really hot. I use digital but after a 400 watt digital went tits up that old magnetic got broken out. Again.

I'm a musician, so I have some gear. Before I started growing in the current house, I simply put my music gear in that room, hired an electrician, and had him run a dedicated 20 amp circuit for my "studio". If you don't have any gear, just tell him you're going to have a recording studio in that room.
