I always figured the idea was to get as much of everything out of the system as possible so you can rebuild the nute profile and get the ph office the media back in range to stop root damage, then I'd start back at qtr strength.

I'm happy for someone to teach me I'm wrong here.

All you are doing is washing excess salts out of the media when you flush. Each nutrient is either positively charged (cation) or negatively charged (anion) so if you flush with a dilute mix there’s cations and anions floating around that can bond with the ones in the media making them release and then wash out of the mix more effectively
