Rather than running candidates for office, they focus on direct action, rallies, protests, and inclusive shows of strength in numbers.

Consciously nonpartisan, they organize around issues, in deliberate repudiation of the elitist 'us vs them' games of divide and conquer.

This seems like a model for change from the grassroots upward. It's been highly effective in North Carolina.

More votes for President Lyndon Johnson (like more votes for Democrats today) might have arguably been necessary to forestall the right and protect existing social programs, but it provided no exit from an unacceptable status quo. A non-electoral opposition offered another pathway to change—a pathway that was tragically cut off by King’s assassination.

Except that wasn't really what happened.
