sometimes it's better to resist/ignore than get all wound up and reply to some things. Hate seeing form posts turning to shit, no need for it. Same happening on the other 420 sites not just here.

so keyboard warriors can we all chill out and smoke some herb...

For what its worth ive run both COBS ( Citis, 5590s and Vero). I currently run Nanolux DE Fixtures.
Hit 3.5 a light in a tent. Do they get hot? Yes, I run a large intake and extraction and have good temps. ACDE hood would be ideal.
However, where DE shines is in a larger space.
A DE Can illuminate a 5 x 6 space Flower and a 6 x 7 Veg from our tests.
The LED will be of lower electricity for sure. In a hobby grower enviornment a LED would be ideal, but that still depends on your grow style.
A DE with an AC DE Hood and intake and extraction fan will cost less than the LED and the yield will be enormous with the right genetics.
Really all about how you grow and your budget. LED will last longer for hobby growers.
I prefer DE myself as the cost of LED is still absurd and electricity where we live is cheap.
LED is great, would reccomend a LED unless your groing really big plants and need the penatration of a DE

People hitting 3.5-4 lbs with 800-900w of diy leds in ~25 sq feet easy now.

The AC/DE hoods are the only sensible way to do DEHPS without massive ceilings.

As for cost, you can build a 1000w samsung strip light that has 27% more raw output (than a 1150w dehps) and is better in every single regard for around $850. A 1000w AC/DE setup is like $600.

  • 6x Samsung LT-FB24B double row 44" strips ($300)

  • 3x Mean Well HLG-320H-48A drivers ($250)

  • 6x 46" pieces of 1.8" aluminum heatsink ($180) note how its 2" longer than the strips, dont forget that

  • 3/4" Aluminum L frame 1/8" thick for your frame, 4x 46" pieces - $30

  • A box of 5 slot wagos - $20

  • 14g and 18g solid core wire - $12

  • M6 screws - $3

  • Power cords - $15

  • Thermal tape - $10

Total cost is about $820 plus shipping. 960-1000+ watts depending on how many extra watts your A series meanwells give you. PPF output of around 2200+

A DEHPS bulb running on 1150w overdrive has a PPF output of around 2000. And those AC/DE hoods with the glass on them eat a solid 15% of that, so really 1700 PPF. If you dont want to HAVE to replace your bulb every 3 months, a 1000w DEHPS bulb is around 1850 PPF.

And you can veg under the LEDs. Quality should increase in every regard. They'll last 8-10 years. Driver has 7 year warranty. Spectrum is far better. You can place them closer to your plants.

The DEHPS might edge it on in penetration, but I frankly really doubt it.

HPS is just not there. And if I hear someone say this is all bullshit because I dont use DEHPS myself, then you can keep telling yourself those inefficient orange space heaters are the best while us LED heads will laugh at you.

You sure spew a lot of myth for someone that really doesn't even have a LED Strip harvest in the bag.
1 Question - Why would someone replace 1150W HPS with 900W led? Shouldn't it be 690W max at the 60% led watt : Hps watt ratio?
Your trimming the wattage savings too small to be attractive with what you recommend.

And then there is you'r 4 units in a 5x5 guarantee
Everyone is on the GML HLG550 vs hps stream I would assume. He is covering a 5x6 per "light", let's just see if he get's 4 units per 5x6.
If not, are you going to call him an amateur?

Because why not? You would run a 1000w DEHPS in a 5x5 tent due to heat and intensity issues in a 4x4, which would loose you yield. But a 1150w DEHPS can't max out a5x5 tent. So that LED build can be used, and it will use utilize the space fully.

I wanted to show a full on setup example that can not only replace, but then run circles around a DEHPS. And why only take 1000w as an example the maximum they can go is 1150 watts so just to make it a FULL replacement we gotta account for that. And the result is a light that can be used for both veg and flower (already pays for the extra 200$), grows higher quality bud, outputs ~20% more raw photons, can actually be used in most setups like a tent, lasts nearly a decade before it degrades or components die, and still consumes 250 less watts from the wall. Oh, and it doesnt blast a bunch of IR onto your poor plants.

The savings from not needing to replace bulbs, reflectors, and ballasts over the 10 years lifespan of the LED light is well over $3000. So you could replace a whole room of them with the LEDs and make a great investment.

There's no excuse to come up with to say it isn't full fledged DEHPS replacement, and actually not just that but a VERY cost effective DEHPS destroyer, even ran on overdrive.

And then there is you'r 4 units in a 5x5 guarantee
Who said anything about a guarentee? You're never guarenteed any kind of yield. You earn it. I'm just letting people know that people are pulling around there with LEDs in such a space. Not only is 4lbs not possible with DEHPS, let alone in a 5x5 tent, but just to get 3-3.5 with dehps requires a PERFECTLY dialed in grow running clones you know like the back of your hand.

No? You can't pull 4 pounds in any size space with either an HLG 550 or a 1000w HPS (double or single ended). You'd need about twice as much light to do 4 lbs obviously.

So if I hang your proposed led build in my space even the shittiest 5 pack of seeds automatically become winners?

Your killing me bro

You're putting words in my mouth again.

I just said you earn your yield, you arent given it to you on a silver platter.

However, you will have a much easier time going over 3 pounds under that LED setup than you would with DEHPS any day of the week That should be obvious by now.

And if you dialed in the setup/strains for both a 1150w DEHPS and that LED light, you would pull more under the LED every time.

That is close to my total system.

3 x320W drivers, one with 4 strips two with 3. The layout is to cover 4'x6' trays in total.

Yeah dude. Check out Fluence bioengineering's youtube channel. Massive cannabis farms are using their SPYDR X Plus and other types of lights from their old cmh/dehps/hps lamps and because of it they can now do vertical grows which just triples their output. They all mention the upfront cost being the reason they waited so long to swap over, but once they did every single cost went down massively, their production went way up, and the quality of the crop is a noticeable upgrade.

They sell the best, most efficient (up to 2.5 umol/j) LED lights that are certified to be used in these kinds of gardens. And they've been killing the market for YEARS now.

Hell, all of the LivWell grows here in colorado have switched over to them too a while back.

Not just cannabis farms either. All farms are switching over. It's a revolution.

The energy savings from the higher efficiency and reduced cooling requirements, the reduced water and nutrient requirements, the savings of never needing to change bulbs/hoods for 10 years, etc etc. are unbelieveable on this scale of growing.

How's it treating you? That's one hell of a light. And a 4x6' tray is perfect for the 44" long strips.
