My lost genetics, Cleaning up the seed collection

Only 1%? For me it's between 5-10% worth flowering 2-3 times, and if it's a real keeper, it see's outdoors as well as indoors. I used to outright abuse my plants in order to see if they make the cut(stress testing) but if I run 40 seeds(average run for me) I wind up with at least 1-3 great fems. Doesn't matter the breeder I pick, just seems like odds are stacked in my favor.
Maybe I’m pickier then most,
I look for huge yielding , very dense, not pruned to popcorning, looks, smell, taste & doesn’t want to go over 63days I have 2 that I compare too, I always seem to go for them over all else.
I grew a cookies cross that was fire had everything but the yeild sucked , at a 30% loss over my others , it didn’t stay long .

I had a really good C99 , but wasn’t dense n didn’t look very nice . Probably had the best smell of the lot.
I smoke with my eyes 1st lol
I keep looking . I have a GC cross going that I hope makes the cut because i had a good time growing her, but is prone to popcorning and needs heavy lollipopping
If it smokes like Mom n grows like dad, I’ll let it slide.

Currently I have 4 strains in all stages of growth, I have 2 strains in seedling stage, 3 different phenos each, and just started another 1/2 pack of seeds . That’s more then I want of a mix , but I just can’t stop popping seeds hunting for special phenos .

What would you say your pop rate is for finding a special plant ?
I think I’m at about 1%
It depends on what you mean by special. Something that’s going to blow everyone away, yeah 1%. Something that’s a keeper and good in my garden way more than that. I’ve got a Pheno of sour diesel and ghost train haze that would work their way into anyone’s garden. I popped 10 beans to find those two.

With that said, I’m always looking to improve. Have several that are about ready that I haven’t tried yet

Your condition of 63 days rules out my sour d and GTH. GTH is not a huge yielder either. But this is for personal and a wonderful hobby for me. I am not growing for cash.

I have always been into math, I see it everywhere, when I start running numbers n see this pound costed me double to make vs something else , I don’t like it as much.

I do this all out of pocket for my family .
And I love to grow, it makes me happy caring for all my girls . But when I start adding it up. I got to draw a line.
My 9week rule is because I have not found any that I thought was worth the extra time .

When I’m running new, I will let them finish up to a point. (I had a sativa pheno that was cut at 12ish weeks with no signs of slowing down)
I should add I don’t go all out looking for that special pheno in a big lot of seeds .
I usually run 10 of a strain n then try the next .

You are missing out on some very nice uplifting, energetic, creativity inducing sativas, but to each his own. I completely understand

Germination rates and the high

I heard they lost their parents in the early 2000’s and again around 07...
Ive been running this strain for about 5 years. Huge yield, super stable, indestructable, super super super tasty... my biggest problem was keeping colas off the floor. Did i say it was tasty?

ill admit that it isnt the most potent... But it does get the job done decently....

Me and my pals love it

i smoked some AK-47 from serious seeds back in 01-02 and blew it my doors off. its not the same anymore.

I had to get rid of my Malawi because she would flower 100-110days on average, you'd have to incrimentally harvest her tops first at 100, and avoid stressing her so that the lowers didn't pop nanners, I gave her away to a sativa fanatic friend of mine, nothing in his garden under 77 days. I really want that girl back, since I'm searching for males this year, I'm hoping 2019 to be a full year of personal hybrids using her and a few others. This thread really motivated me to downsize my crops to maybe 10-20 per strain instead of 40-100 as I used find that to be the best representation of what a strain is(good variety if phenitypes expressing themselves). More variety, more odds at finding which cross is worth devoting time to.

Back in 2008 I grew Nirvana's Power Plant(Durban hybrid), it was the best sativa high I had for years after, I can remember a friend who after finishing the joint, he got up and started running circles around the block "I feel fast, I feel fast!", That's another strain I want to revisit, but I'm not sure how diluted the PPP is today, considering it's nirvana, they likely mixed a bit more skunk to it than the stuff they had in 07-08.

Thats what i hear.
But that doesnt mean it isnt still good.
In fact, compared to some of the top strains that have been coming out in recent years, its still far better.
no disrespect intended, but i have a sour diesel clone and a ghost train haze clone that are very much as good as the old AK-47. imo....

i grew aghan, misty and a few other nirvana strains back in the day. none were worth keeping except the stinky little aghani bitch. nice solid high too...

i got 2 Durban Poison's in veg (unsexed) right now.

I have no doubt there is better too...
Plus... each have different tastes...

I have never had a good and proper haze... and the sour diesel i have had is an ass kicker with a very disticnt tastes that... i can take or leave. But i can see why some would love it.

im growing a new zealand sativa x malawi at the moment. Im going to cross a male from karma genetics over it to bring the flowering time under 100 days. I have a lemon skunk strain. mexican x skunk x ledo uno . 10 week strain. Super lemon smell. Crossed gth1 over gorilla bomb to create a 9 week sativa.

Do you ever keep a cut around for any length of time? When your popping so many seeds of lots of strains and different phenos , how do you keep track with drying n curing. So they don’t get mixed up
What is needed for you to keep a plant around for the long term?

I would love to pop seeds like you, but I’m sure I’d end up loosing something special in the mix with to many going at once .

I have my girls that I always run then I
pop 5 ish seeds , grow them out n take a clone , as soon as I see a root into flower .
Then depending on what’s happening with the clone , I’ll start killing the plants off. Then I run the ones that made it .
Then after that crop, I’ll only keep the best
Then I do it again with the other half of the pack , then take the best one .
Then I compare to my fire to see if it makes the cut .

I’m always looking for a strain that I want to keep around . It’s not easy, I’m too picky .
Ive been known to cut and label clones, then put them in the fridge (stems in water), for a couple weeks until i sex my mother/father plants and select keepers. I think ive been able to keep clones in the fridge up to a few months successfully, but if your not worried about plant count just label the shit out of everything and trash 'em as you determine your keepers.
