have been drying my buds for about 10 days now, after 2 small test harvests each of them have ended up smelling like sweet hay. all of em have ended in that way because i feel like i didnt give my buds enough dry time would jar with stem too flimsy, this time im waiting till they crack no matter what. decided to give them a manicure on the 10th day figured it would smell like hay, it did on the outside but once i started getting in there that dank stinky nose burning smells was hiding in between the buds, was wondering if anyone trims and puts them back in their hanging setup setup? and if this is something to avoid until the day theyre to be put in jars,i still probably have about 3 or 4 more days i hope till the stemp snaps and i can put them in jars. i hope to god this time they dont end up smelling like that stupid hay shit getting so annoyed . do you think me trimming them a couple days before jarring is going to effect the smell? i dried this time in a small grow tent at about 60% rh n about 55temp

You want you're curing humidity to be LOWER than 65. Above that and you risk mold. You also want your curing humidity to be above 58 otherwise no "curing" is really going on.

When I harvest I do a complete trim... all the way down to the finished nugget. Then I dry.

When the humidity is really low (where I live like 18% in the winter time) it is impossible to dry slowly. So it is inevitable that I get some of that hay smell. But once it's in the jars and curing in the right humidity range that hay smell disappears.

I talked to a lot of people about this and everyone gets the hay smell when drying. As far as I know, the chlorophyll will evaporate and cause that grassy smell. This will reduce the harshness of the smoke and is a good sign (or so I was told). I don't get how you guys dry without getting a hay smell. Ive tried everything and I always get the hay smell. In about 1 month the bud will have good taste, in 2 months it will be perfect. Maybe im doing something wrong, but I've tried with low and high humidity and it's always the same.

Some of my strains taste very good just with dryingm others require 1 month at least.

Pardon my bluntness but.....

Your buds look shit, far from primo grown and this is the reason they smoke and smell like hay.

In your case it has nothing to do with how you dry or cure, if they dont taste and smoke amazing after 2 weeks of simple dry time then they never will and the problem was pre harvest not afer.

I only got my weed smelling like hay once many moons ago when starting to grow. Most hay smell will come from the fact that they weren't ready. Also I always trim wet. Also having a well co trolled drying environment is key too for so many reasons.

I always trim/manicure my buds when wet way easier than doing it when dry but that's my preference.

Many strains will have that hay like smell and taste until they are properly cured. I can also notice a pronounced hay character to flower that has been grown with CO2. Dry your sticks until they snap then put the buds into jars or cans with Boveda 62% moisture conditioners for 2 weeks or more. Many people say to open your jars for a few mins every day to allow fresh air to replace the stale. I found an old zip laying in a drawer that had been in just a plastic bag for about a 18 months. The nugs would crumble with barely a touch. I dumped the whole zip in cannavault, and a week later the bud was back to it proper moisture content and pleasant to smoke. It was not as nice as when fresh cured, but it was good enough you would not question it.

I object to the bit where he states that many strains smoke like hay unless they are cured properly, complete rubbish and if you tout this shit expect that this democratic site allows me to counter state your point.

Next move over and except that many members will know a vast site more than you and you need to ease yourself in before making sweeping statements about how 'we' have been growing weed for years.

Enjoy your hay smoke....!
HERE ! HERE ! , I've never had a single bud smell like "Hay" lol , in a single grow! , not even my first ones ,20 some years past. Pluck a bud off , shove it up your arse for 7 days , then smoke that, should smell like hay , or shit .

I always harvest when plants are ripe, but I don't have a controlled environment. What RH% and temps do you dry on?

I wasn't busting the balls of John Wishmyer the orginal poster(newbie). I was busting the balls of Kinggrow1(old timer) for his superior snarky reply's. "Your buds look like shit" and "bullcrap".
Sounds like your pissed at me for the comment I made about raping your sister and turning her into fertilizer in the organic fertilizer thread. Don't worry i was just joking. They said no limits!

As far as adding to the thread... I wet trim because it seems to knock off less crystals. Dry then cure. If you leave the leaves on maybe they are rotting or slightly molding. John try to wet trim next time and see if you develop the same smell problem.

And finally yes i am very bored, thanks for your concern carrott-fro!

I didn't take it as a joke and I think you are a prick without the integrity to own up to being an asshole.

ETA: I agree on your trim/cure. I want to get rid that stuff to prevent unwanted beasties.
