I do know that my hps grown buds are packed FULL of potency and taste. Where do you guys get this shit from these days????. Wow. Just because there is other lightjng choices these days..all of a sudden the king of indoor grow lamps grows weak shitty tasting buds????

Do you really think potency would take a huge hit like you think??? If that was the case then every swinging dick hps grower would be fukt. Cmon.
No i agree with dude, I run led everything after being hard core hps forever, I still have 1 tent (my first) that runs a 1 k hps in a 40x40 tent and the one next door spanks it . the only difference is a 400 watt vero 29 vs a 1 k hps, the hps is less potent and flavorful then the led every time, Given all of the 8 or so strains I've ran since the upgrade, and that being said the king of lighting is a DE gavitia 1k hps, It still hold tops dog status (for now)

I only said a 1 k hps cause its still the top 95 % performer and a new unit is cheap cheap, If led was as cheap as an hps I'd say do that. But that is not the way it is. For 200 ish buck a 1k hps wont be undercut for the cash you invest....

EDIT: Not everyone runs with the same rules or budget and there is no clear cut one light is best for everyone solution, An hps may do bad for one where it's 90 F and works perfectly in a cold climate for someone else. It is what it is, And this is coming from an led fan boy....

No, Not questionable, It's fine . But it's not the best , I mean like 75% of all juice burned is heat, Imagine what an hps could do if it was 30/70 like an led driven at the right wattage. Dont take my words as criticism , Merely just being honest and stating facts, Dollar for dollar hps still wins hands down.... But led will give that same ol strain more terpine profile and quite possibly more usable thc from one grown side by side led/hps. There is something there mate , And unless hps change's it will be a bygone era given time .....

Weak and shitty buds? I don't think anyone said that....let alone even referred to it. In fact my post is asking about which hps unit would better fit my situation..... everything I've read says that yes hps is vest yielding but does in fact lack spectrum thats important to the plants potency. All the research I have personally read has stated that mixing lighting can most definetly produce better potency. It's just usually an unorthodox approach that many steer clear of because of having different fixtures needing to be at different distances from the canopy. I geuss everybody has there preference

I'm thinking about two 400s this time. I didn't have bulbs for two 600s & I'm trying to do this run with what I have. I'm also removing glass from hoods.
Are you topping, lst, ect? Things that may help with canopy management?

I've always used open hood on my hps. And yes I always do both topping and lst. I usually Top once the plant is around 6 inches. Then I tie there branches down right before putting them into the flower tent.

How much of a fan is needed with open hoods? I've got 6" duct booster axial fans, 4"&6" inline fans. Hey one more thing, any difference on how close you can run lights to plants, open/closed hoods?

Jables you got the right idea, you'll never get a consensus off here but just do as much as possible while maintaining temp.

More angles of light disrupts shadows and greatly increases penetration by doing so.

A 600w is more intense than a 400w of course, but two 400w out powers the 600w and has more angles to increase penetration further, possibly exponentially.

Either way, I know you'll grow some more bomb bud! :)

Yep, Dank is 100%. More is more.. Still like I said it might be waste of money/time. Also you need to add extra CO2 if you go + 600w hps (as far as I know). This is important if you want to get

Why you/ppl use open hood hps? Especially in small tents. Are there real benefits? If you use tube you can put it closer so it doesn't matter loosing few % of power.

I have been doing A/B test with HPS vs HPS + LED and I don't find real benefits adding LED's. MAYBE get 1-4% bigger yields but the potency and taste is just the same. It might be that Mars Hydro are just too crappy LED's..

I've never ran a closed hooded set up. So I can't say for sure what the height difference would be. I can say this though. During the summers to avoid having to raise my lights to avoid burning . I went and purchased a super spreader. Which acts like a heat shield and I can keep my light within 10 inches still and maintain its light penetration. I personally have 2 - 4" inline fans. One exhausting air outside and one bringing air in from outside. Along with 4 - 6 inch clip fans in the tent. One in each corner. My temps are currently stable at 82f and 40%TH. Been adding CFLS to keep tempts up so the plants can photsynthesize the led lights

I can say this much. The plants directly underneath the led light, there pistils are thicker and longer. I thought it might be strain specific . But the last 3 plants I started flowering i had the led over them for the first 3 weeks. And all 3 had very noticeably larger pistils accompanied by more frost than those there werw underneath the hps for first few weeks. I haven't heard mamy GREAT results from the marshydro units. I see alot of people running them though. Eithet way. It cones down to if your satisfied eith what your growing , thats all that matters

In a 4x4 i would run 2 315s. Eliminates the need for spectrum supplement, comparable to a 1,000w se hps, twice the bulbe life, a phillips master color is cheaper than a 6 or thowy eye hortilux, better overall quality (colors, terps, potentcy). It will be sooner than you think that old school hid lighting will be long gone and cmh will be the entry level lighting, unless leds come down in price. I got a sun spectra 630 setup with bulbs, ballast and 2 reflectors for $500 to my door. It usually comes with 1 duel bulb hood for the 630 setup but i like the idea of running it as 2 315s. Watt for watt they will destroy se hps, its very close to de though de does out perform. On the flip side of that, cmh is easier to deal with i regards to height above canopy. They do put out a good deal of uv though so you should run them higher than an hps. Ive run hps for years. I now run cob led and cmh and will never look back. True full spectrum white light is the way to go if youre not using the sun. The initial cost is the only thing hps has going for it but the long term savings and gains of cmh vs. hps will make up for it many times over. Fwiw. Just trying to help. This is an idustry/hobby filled with snake oil, smoke & mirrors. Do what you will. Not my grow, not my money.
2 x 315 cmh is no where near a 1k hps. 2 x 315cmh is 66,000 lumens and a 1k hps is 145,000 lumens. i would like to see 2 x 315cmh vs a single 600w hps. Money wise long term i agree that cmh is the way to go but hard dense buds? hps all the way!

Plants dont see lumens. There is alot more to it then luminous output. The term lumens only pertains to light perceived by the human eye. Ppfd for cmh is about 1.9, se hps is like 1.3/4, de 1.7. 2 315 cmh would destroy a 600 hps in yield and quality
