The longer and thicker the grass, the harder the mower pushed. We had a shop in town that could put an edge on those blades. Very few people paid anyone for lawn mowing there at that time. It was like a hobby or some damn thing.

It took

It took two of us about 4 hrs to get most lawns done.. Still, at .25 an hr I was rolling in the dough..
It was gone before I got home!! Lol Milkshakes were 35c. Pop and Candy bars a dime.. good times!
We had 5 rental cottages and I pushed an old wooden reel mower with steel wheels around all summer until the grass died ..... dad can you pay me I asked? "Fuck you son, I buy your food and clothes so back to pushing", what don't kill ya makes ya stronger lol. We got a new "fancy" ride on right around the time I started getting high, that was good times lol.

My Dad never paid for his once a week mowing... It was his lawn mower... He taught me how to keep it sharp with a hand file.. But even sharp they were a bitch! Lived on a hill.. Lol

Jeez, I dunno why i started reading about this but it will probably affect all of us in some way sooner or later.

Make sure you are aware of and have at least an understanding of the rights (and the 5 year look back rule) that Medicaid has in asset seizure and spend down as they relate to nursing home debts you or your spouse (or parents) might incur. Although this is mostly for those that will check in but never out, it could also apply if you had an extended stay (that was not covered/time limit reached, for both Medicare and private insurance) in a nursing home for an injury/rehabilitation. I doubt many of us could readily afford the $80K yearly average cost of a nursing home stay.

Reason I brought this up, there are ways to protect your assets from seizure but they have to be implemented prior (hence the 5 year rule) to facility admission.

We just went thru this with my mother in law. She didn't have very many assets, but it has made me wonder how many assets get seized...the number is probably staggering. I would hate to think that I worked all my life for my property and it ends up with them instead of my family. If hubby or I find ourselves in that position, we will probably make our move to Costa Rica where care is affordable.

The Medicaid Estate Recovery Program (MERP) is also intertwined with individual state(s) laws. I couldn't find anything on the amounts seized in a quick search (and you're right, it probably is staggering and a bad "optic").

I went thru this with my mom a while back (Alzheimer's). 3 or 4 years in a NH wipes out just about anybody's nest egg.

Bring's up another point, make sure you are aware of your "filial responsibility", which differs by state, especially if you are estranged from your parents. You could be on the hook for their medical debts.

if any of you have cause to file for SS restricted benefits, survivor benefits only or family benefits, this article (although written from an advisor's perspective) explains some of the pitfalls of incorrectly applying for benefits and more difficult still, trying to correct a filing mistake with the SS admin. (or any Gov't entity for that matter).

Prior to having to go into assisted living then a nursing home, I had to deal with Medicare and "Home Based Care" for my mom. Thankfully, her GP understood the intricacies and said and did all the right things so we could take advantage of it. This article explains it in more detail, evidentially many people can't/don't/won't take advantage of it, but it's there and requires some finesse. Also the author, Philip Moeller, has a couple of good books about SS and Medicare you should read if you're getting to retirement age.
