Did you not become a US citizen the day you got married to an American?

No, I thought if you married a resident citizen, you became a citizen by default.

It's what I always heard. Never knew of an actual case though.

I know a lot of guys in my dad's generation brought home European War brides. They had to become citizens afterwards?
You know you can legally live in a country without actually being a citizen...right?

I have less than 10 years to live. I have my use-by date pencilled in, so honestly, this is irrelevant to my life. 71 is enough years. Eight years, three months. Sayonara. Of course, I could die sooner, which would be fine.

I always thought my war bride neighbors were citizens. But I never really asked. Maybe they weren't.


They were just normal people in the community, nobody asked them for papers.
Well they might very well be, just it's not a requirement to be a citizen to live here for example if you have a "green-card" or other legal residency.
