This is what Cree recommends in order to replace a 1000w HPS and I will be building this over the winter and documenting it here.

The Cree light is a 553W build that uses 48 XP-E Photo Reds and 144 4000K XP-G3. I am still working on sourcing a few of the parts but here is what I have so far. I am going to use a cheaper heatsink but I am still looking around.

yes when your study picks an arbitrary area and compares fixtures with different beam angle and then discards all the light that falls outside of the area. im as pro-LED as they come but that study was invalid

"4x4’ plot at manufacturer recommended height • 100x100 points on the entire 4x4’ plot (10,000 points)"

Considering that Cree makes COBs and doesn't recommend them for horticulture (Osram too), does that tell you anything? Or am I missing something?

yes ive read the study. what about the HPS light that falls outside the 4x4?

think for a moment how a fixture with 1.82 PPF/W can be twice as efficient as a fixture measured at 1.72 PPF/W measured in the same sphere. its impossible
The height of the Cree buiild is 4.9 feet and the Gavita is 3.2. So in all fairness how much of Cree's light falls outside the 4x4? irrelevant IMO

im sure your light will work great. id temper your expectations vs a gavita in a real world application with wall reflectivity and proper height, etc.
I do get what you are saying about the scattered light, but it is my understanding that any light that is bounced isnt that useful. Been wrong a thousand times though.
I am not really in it to replace a Gavita but I am looking at creating powerful canopy penetrating LED lamps in my garage designed by people much smarter than me..

the cree has extremely focused optics. almost nothing falling outside of the 4x4

the gavita is throwing a ton of light out at up to 150 degrees

lets do some quick math.tangent of 75 degrees = 3.732
for their 38" height, the fixture is casting direct light from the bulb 143" off of the centerline to the plane of measurement!

calculating this in reverse, to perfectly illuminate a 4x4 at 38" youd need a reflector with a half-angle of 32.5. or a full angle of 65 degrees. lets see them put the cree design up against a reflector designed for smaller spaces like an ACDE and see how they do. even that isnt anywhere close to the 65 degrees to make it a fair fight but is closer.

again i would expect that 550 to replace maybe 750W of HPS (which is great)

If you think it's a fucked up study I will happily take your word for it. That said, please enlighten me as to your thought process on this.

that the gavita casts a lot of light outside of the 4x4 area which is completely discarded and they compare it with highly focused lenses in an area it perfectly covers

that they claim a light that is 1.82 umol/J in a sphere is twice as efficient as one that is 1.72

its maybe one step above that dude who measures oohmoles at single point, with some fancy graphs and a cree logo on it.
