You and Reality seem to miss each other by wide margins so if I were in your shoes, I'd be going to school instead of heckling.

I love how you and @Sativied both try to fault those for buying COB LED fixtures and testing them. You'd like us to keep our heads firmly up and locked just like yourself.

Sorry, not doing it. And when my fixtures do the same thing in my grow that they've been doing in everyone else's, you'll be even further behind.

But by all means, go on yelling about how COB LED won't change anything. Just don't expect to be taken seriously.

You remind me of those people who hated on the Internet because we already had CB radio!

Million ways to skin a cat.... No one claimed that mono's didn't work. Just expensive and cumbersome to work with. The price tag of the helio spectra lights reflects that. Compared the price tag of a similarly powered cob panel from any of the resident vendors.

Looks like a combo of white red blue green


They're also much more expensive than just CXB3590s.
Only their E60 panel is "cheap" nex to the rest of their panels.
1000 dollars for 630 watts and it's 450 nm, 660 nm, and 5700K white

Their LX601 uses the same wavelengths as the E60 but with far-red added (Blue, red, 5700K and far-red)

Their extremely expensive RX30 uses 380nm, 400, 420, 450, 520, 630, 660, 735nm, and 5700K white

They use nothing that CXB/Vero cobs don't have except for the UVA in their too expensive panel.
And I'm 100% certain that those green diodes are extremely inefficient compared to phosphor cobs because GaN doesn't produce green light very efficiently.

Also, if pink lamps are so good, why are these HPS growers personally using yellow lamps? Pink lamps are only good at vegging microgreens.

They say white leds are for street lights, then they turn around and use street lights too. HPS lamps were designed as street lamps.

Wow, what a goofy light el heliospectra are.

I'm working on a light design with 12 Cree 36V CXB3590 CD Bin COBs in 3 different Kelvin temps, with different lens angles depending on position, and 8 each of hyper red and far red Oslon monos, all on three external drivers. It should kill, absolutely kill, 4'x4', and could probably rock 6x6 in a tent. I know the layout I want, but I'm a shitty hardware designer so I'm having a friend help design the chassis. I'd love to add some UV to the mix, but that complicates my plan considerably.
MY LIGHT should crush a thouie, when it is done.
I'm mostly hoping this post makes Chuck E mad.

I think the point FRAN was trying to make about Heliospectra, is that LED lights actually are making their way into horticulture. Companies are willing to invest in the tech on a large scale, even though most of us have better grow lights in our basements for a lot less. Shouldn't be much longer until facilities start using efficient white LED light for growing as the norm.

Companies are willing to invest in the tech on a large scale, even though most of us have better grow lights in our basements for a lot less. Shouldn't be much longer until facilities start using efficient white LED light for growing as the norm.
Five years and you won't be able to give a streetlight away in a hydro store.

Here's the basic COB layout, I've decided not to worry about monos for the time being, I'll still ruthlessly mock and punish a 1K HPS with this light. I won't beat a DE with it, but that's not really the goal.

Passively cooled 90cm square fixture, 12 COBs with heatsinks, holders and lenses.
All will be 36V CXB3590 CD or higher.

Driven by 1 HLG-185H-C700:
(around the outer edge)
4 Corners - 6500K with 60 degree lenses
4 Centers - 4000K with 80 degree lenses

Driven by 1 HLG-185H-C1400:
(square in the center)
4 in the Middle - 2700K with 100 degree lenses

A COB fixture is a lot more expensive though. Even when built myself it was more than twice as expensive "per umol" than my Gavita. In my case the energy savings will take many many years to earn back that price difference and I don't delude myself that I ever will.

Still, it's a hobby and I like growing with COBs a whole lot better. People who see the results are quickly convinced it's worth the extra expense.
I'm not sure about "many years" it depends on where you live of course. I live on the coast in southern CA, where not only do the temps exceed 100f+ but electricity costs are through the roof. I'm paying an average of $0.28, when added to the cost of cooling the massive heat produced by a 1000w HPS, and assuming you're spending about $300 on a nice HPS fixture with reflector & ballast; Now COBs, we can say a difference of about $1000 more for the COBs ($1300 cob setup can get you something nice, easily to match the par). That $1000 i pay up front will pay itself off in a year, year and a half easily!

Great thread, it got trashed real quick.
Alot of trolling going on, but some very valuable information.
Here is my take on this, as a person who has used many different lights.
For the hobbyist where wattage and efficiency counts, this is where COBS shine.
As for RIO, yes if your growing for profit it may take some time to recoup the benefits for sure.
In addition, in a few years when you do get your RIO back, new technology will be out and much better.
As for commercial, I do not see why anyone would switch to COB. The cost is insane, that is a business market.
Paying 3-4x the price of a DE for several years of RIO is not a good investment.
DE can pull alot, 2.5-3lbs per light at 1k.
With the new ACDE hoods with indirect cooling that does not affect PPFD is a game changer.
As well as cooling DE is honestly not that hard. People are way over blowing the heat of a DE.
They are hot but still coolable with good ventilation.AC is only needed for larger amounts of lights.
The ACDE HOODS, can get quite close even with glass removed.
I love COBS and the PPFD is amazing, but the price is just way too high for commercial at this point.
As well, the dropoff of penetration cannot compare to DE. COBS have good penatration and can grow trees, but a DE will out perform in penetration.
As for RIO, DE wins. People who care about wattage are small timer growers. Large commercial is not worth years od RIO for not much electrical costs in comparison.



What I want to see is the following;

2 5 x 5 grow areas or 2 x 5 x 10 areas with light movers for each
(light movers work if you know how to use them)
Same clones, similar size, 30 day veg, same light cycles, same nutrients, same medium.
1000w of COBs, Either CXB or Vero 29.
1000w of DE with wither a pre built fixture or a ACDE hood.

Same amount of plants.

Want to see a final dry yield as well as real THC testing.

This needs to be done by someone with the means.

I may do this just to get all this BS done with.

For everyone to finally shut up and see which is the better technology and by how much.

Would anyone be interested in this?

Would love for the trolls to be done commenting.

Put this to the test.

We all know COBS are the most efficient PAR per watt and even better when driven lower such as 700ma.
Price is just too high.
One day I hope to see a BML type light with COBS commercially.

This is a debate, I am not a fanboy of any lighting system, I want the best watt for watt.
I would rather replace 1k watts getting 2lbs for 1k of COB and see how much yield increases.
People need to start using the same wattage and see what yields.
If anyone has done this please link me.
