Water/nutes ppm question...

Hi everyone,
I've gone out and purchased a nutradip nutrient reader (ppm tester) and not sure if I have it figured out...

I've calibrated with the recommended fluid
NaCl - 1000ppm

I've got a good reading from my tap water, it is coming in at around 150-160 ppm at room temperature...

Now here comes my confusion... My 3 white widow auto flowers are about 2 weeks old from seedling, and have recently been introduced to a 1000watt Hps, and I can see that they are really wanting to grow now...
https://www.rollitup.org/t/white-widow-autoflower-here-we-go.888785/

So if my tap water starts at 150-160 ppm.. How many ppms should I add of nutrients to my tap water? Like I've read lots of different opinions, but bottom line is that it's going to be a very mild nute mix... I'm just not sure if when people say that the mixture should be 200-300 ppm, if that includes my original tap water reading...

Btw I'm using 3 part GH in sunshine mix #4 which is an inert medium

Please guys, need some help with this thing..

I'm not sure if I need 200 ppm of nutes or 200 ppm of water/nutes...

A lot of the parts in tap water are micronutes such as calcium, copper, magnesium and others in smaller amounts. The rest is fluoride, arsenic, and minuet amounts of pharmaceuticals. If you want to be more accurate then look up tap water content for your country/area, there are probably reports online you could check out.

Happy growing. :leaf:

Cool! Thanks to you both! I was worried I was gonna over nute... So the number for my tap water goes towards the final number... Cool!

What do you guys think is a good ppm for 2 week old white widows? Or maybe post me a link where I can get a good ppm feeding schedule... Thanks a lot

If your question is: how much should you add when people tell you. Then the answer depends on if the person who you told included your tap or not...? If i was to tell you, i would tell you 200ppm, i would tell you if i included the tap or not cuz everyones is different.

By your picture you'd probably be fine at 100 or 200ppm in my opinion, it depends on what the plant tells you for the fact.

Ive always added my base to my target...so i start with 160 my target is 900 give or take a pinch so i end with 1060...just me....and i do 1/4 strength for seedlings and clones, veg i do 1/2 strength and in bloom i go full strength....

Cool, I was just following a guide I saw on another forum... I've found that if I follow the directions on the side of the bottle of the GH 3 part, the water/nutes wind up being around 210-220 ppm, that's including my original 150 from my tap water...

About 7 drops (from an eye dropper) of each part micro, grow, bloom, being 0.33 per liter

For being a 2 week old from seed, I think those measurements are pretty accurate.. I'll give them that for now and see how they react...

As always, thanks for the input y'all!

Check out my grow journal!

I have never really understood the following of ppm's......You don't need to, even in any hydro application!

Doesn't the nutrient maker have a feeding chart? Do they not tell you how much to add per gallon in ml?
In hydro you fill your res. You top it off with a 33% concentrate solution when you need to.
When the total amount of refill's hits the total amount of nutrient you put in the res to start - you dump and refill with 100% solution and start the whole thing over.
At the flip to flower you dump and refill with bloom formula and follow the 33% rule again....No metering, No anal matching of ppm's in top offs.......So what if you add Silica or Ca/Mg.....Just mix at what the nute makers suggest and adjust needs from there...

150 - 160 starting water ppm's = good enough, forget about that and do what you need.. Remember this - Anal is for the religious far right.....Ok for most of the right period....

Thanks dr. Who...

I'm not using a reservoir though, I am using sunshine mix #4, and since it's an inert medium (has 0 nutrients) I need to give my plantsall of its nutes for its lifetime... And especially since this was their first feeding, I wanted to get it bang on...

General Hydroponics 3 part (micro, grow, bloom) does have a chart on their bottles, and if I add the recommended doses, being 33ml per 100 liters of water for seedling and cuttings, the water/nutes mix comes out to be around 210-220 ppm...

So basically, GH 3 part for seedlings and cuttings recommended dosage is about 50-70 ppm of nutes added to my water... Seems right...

Seeing that I am a conservative, your a douche. Moving on, I dont top off with more nutrients I set my res with appropriate solution and top off with plain water til my res change in 7 days during veg and 10 days during flower. Not knocking Dr. Who (except for his political affiliation) but experiment and find out what's right for you according to your application. BTW I think there is more anal being performed by the lib left then the far right but that's my opinion.

Ah the religious far right - always the first to call anyone not seeing things their way NAMES.....

The way you are doing it is reducing the amount of available nutrition for the plant by it (the plant) using it and any rise in ppm your seeing is non nutritional things the plant is putting back into the solution..
You change your res., so that keeps it from getting "toxic" to your plants....That's good!
BUT
Your still missing out on available nutrient to the plant and dumping and filing your res too much = lost profit...

The method I listed is PERFECT for DWC and works very well in ebb too.
I gave the method because it's old school and works with out problems......

So then, back to the political......Believing in reality and not corporate ownership of the politics in our "free" country make me a douche?

You right wingers are sad.......and I'm not affiliated with any political "party"..... I vote for the best person on the ticket. Sadly now a days, It's voting for the lesser of two evils!

Here's something I do believe in.
Religiously based moral issues have NO place in politics! These are "personal" values!

The greed of corporations and the FACT that they pay little to nothing in tax's, all the while lowering wages/benefits or not at all keeping the workers pay up with inflation or even matching some ratio to the ever increasing RECORD profits of these companies....is INHUMAN!
I saw a company I worked for actually double in size 3 years in a row!!......At contract time, the company said to all union workers. "We do not have the resources to increase wadges or benefits at this time. In fact we have to increase the out of pocket for health care. We have to demand that you give in to mandatory Saturday's and begin split shifting at notice. You will be open to shift changes as we see fit to, as needed on a temporary basis (A friend of mine is still on a 3 year "temporary" shift change)...

We should be able to "fire" any elected official as we (the public that voted them in) see fit!
When fired - They are just like you and me. They take NOTHING with them - no life time medical, no free ride retirement - NOTHING- your fired, GET OUT!

Now how much real attention to just what they actually DO for us do you think they would change if they could loose "easy street" and hit the skids for a bad job.....How many actual days would be increased IN their seat, IN congress instead of being on the road fund raising?

Well, I could go on but, the servers don't have that kind of bandwidth to cover what I have to say about the far right......

Leaving quietly, NOT calling names!
(Any one ever think that this (name calling) is one of the real "today" problems with politics? I mean come on, before Reagan....We had an election and when it was done. Those elected sat down at tables and GOT THE JOB DONE! NO finger pointing and blaming the other party for all the worlds problems!)

Monkey,,,,,,Glad you have an opinion. Sad to feel that you don't know where it came from. :finger:

Sorry guys, lol, I'm Canadian lol... My country is already in the right direction with having Trudeau and his liberal party in charge...

FREE THE CANNABIS PLANT!

I hope our fellow American neighbors can figure out what will work best for their country...

I haven't voted since 1978 but I have a feeling that Mr. Trudeau will attempt to restore freedoms, rights and liberty's. Maybe he;ll restore some railway line or recover certain assets/nessecities back into the tax payers pockets. How's it going with the mix:)

I agree, I'm happy to see Harper out and someone young and refreshing in power... A true speaker of the people... But time will tell...

As for my nute mix, now that I've given them their first feeding on the 6th, they've grown a lot! Seems like they're all enjoying the mix... But now that it's going into day 5 after watering, one of my girls are showing a bit of N difficencies... I think lol...

Not sure if I should go up in nutes, or maybe stick around the 200-210 ppm nutes mix, but instead of 7-8 drips of bloom and 7-8 drips of grow, maybe add a bit more grow, say 11-12 drips of grow and 5-6 drips of bloom, that way, more nitrogen is being given to the plant... But not sure if depriving it of the bloom solution is a good idea... Just don't want to nute burn...

I have tried a few ferts and I've always used about 1/6 reccomended by the label for outside in the res. I find that is enough, whatever that is in ppm's. I also know that I can safely spray a 1/6 NPK mix as a foliar feed. Flood and drain

First of all, how can you come and say I am of the religious far right? I said I am a conservative. That's the same as me saying you are a member of the crazy elitist left wing of the Democrat party. So you might want to think before you start going in that direction. There is a difference within movement, but this is neither the time nor the place for political discourse. I am here to help someone, I expect you are also...sooooo let's keep it there. I was mostly responding to the anal comment and it was made in jest. So let's not get all butt hurt (pun intended) over it. As far as reducing the available amount of nutrition to the plant and wasting nutrients, do you not think that by "topping off" with more nutrient solution you really don't know if some of your nutrients are locked out, that you may just be wasting nutrient solution on plants that are not up taking them. By changing my reservoir every 7 days, which most hydro folks swear by especially in dwc you 1) reduce the chance to get root rot or slime in your res. 2) make sure that your plants are not experiencing lockout for anymore than that time(if indeed it is happening). 3) Continually supplying your plants with fresh nutrient at a normal interval. 4) Not wasting nutrient because you are only using the amount that you originally supplied. Understanding that I have been growing since 93 and I used to do it your way. I also use to run my plants as hot as they could stand it, one time even feeding up to 1700 ppms. I found both of those methods to be a waste. They did not give me a better product than I produce now and I was going through nutes like crazy. So all I can say to the actual person who is running this grow is....experiment when you can. You will find what is best for you. Take what people say try it out and if you like it incorporate it in your method. Also never believe that something is perfect for an application. The feeding schedule that is supplied by manufacturers is a base it needs to be finely tuned to your own plants, You may need more or less that is for you to find out. Getting to the end of your trip is great but it is the journey that is the most fun.

Because the Evangelical right is taking over the Rep. party and not for the good! Politics is not the thread here - Agreed!
The rest of your post does not matter! The OP is in a solid media - no res!

Glad you changed and experimented! You found what worked for you best.
I simply gave a good easy solution to someone who has not yet.

Some other small points:
In DWC doing the 33% rule in bloom - you change over a 5 gallon pail about every 5 days - sometimes as little as 3!

93 eh? How quaint.....since 75 here......
