Don't know about Cali. My experience with gangs was all in Chicago. The neighborhood I grew up in was ruled by the Satan's Disciples, not to be confused with the "Devil's Disciples", which was a large black gang.

I was one of them, basically. I played soccer in Douglas Park with my neighborhood buddies, almost all of them Mexican. It was a poor, immigrant neighborhood. In Cali, it seems there is a lot of animosity between Mexicans and whites.

I think the gang structures, even in Chicago, have separated along ethnic lines now days, though.
