100% disabled vet looking to move to Oregon.

In 2004, I had a battle buddy that would tell me about growing up in Oregon. I am from the Texas region. He started with insects. Fleas and chiggers were not a problem up there. I have to spray my yard 2x a month to keep them off of me, my dogs. and my house.
I am tired of living in a desert! I have found waterfront property in the $250,000 price range. I have been looking in the southern part of Oregon but I am open to whatever. I am so sick of it here, I could probably just pick a random house in Oregon and be happy. The jail sentence for murder is less than a growing charge!! They can keep that shit, I am moving! I am currently waiting on my backpay and full benefits to come in, maybe the beggining of next month.
It is hard to find property in the very SW of the state. I have found nice places in Grants Pass, Medford, Klammoth falls, and Eugene. I really wanted to have a little acreage away from town. Because I am disabled, I wil not have to travel to work everyday.
I dont expect to have a buisness license, but I would like to trade or sell the extra that I have... Looking to homestead and hang with some hippies!

some cheap houses around salem with acreage, maybe even a shop too. you own't find anything near portland.

if you're gonna grow outdoors, look for elevation. being near the coast or salem will mean your outdoor crop turns to mold before it finishes. not as much of a problem near bend or medford.

The last episode of Dexter, he said serial killers come from Bend lol. It will not stop me or hinder my decision! What is going on with Klammoth falls? I found nice places for cheaper than expected! I was under the impression that Salem was kind of rough? I really dont know... I was trying to decide if we wanted to buy an RV and travel to these places first or use the money to put towards a house!
Where I live, people say if you dont like the governor or the laws you can move. So I think that I will move. leave my $90,000 house here and buy a $250,000 house elsewhere. Nice politics huh... Aparently, the school teacher have moved also.

What are electrical costs like?

I pay 9cents a kilowatt. It raises to 25cents during peak hours from 2 to 7 when it is 100F outside and 85F through the night. I run 3x1000 lights and my monthly is almost as much as my mortgauge, $650 a month

the lower areas of oregon (portland to salem to eugene and beyond) have interesting climate. drought and sun all summer, and then it starts raining in october and doesn't really stop until next spring. it might only snow once or twice a year, too. the ocean keeps things just warm enough all winter.

not so sure about the higher areas (medford, bend, etc).

Thanks for talking, I asked a similar question a few months ago, but it is almost time to make a decision. Where I am, we get extreme weather both ways. Hot, hot summers and the central plains welcome artic air in the winter! There are few days that it is comfortable to go outside and bust ass working!

I made the move from cali to Oregon. Orginally went to Corvallis. Had land lined up in Sprague river area. Currently living in cottage grove after living in Eugene a year.

If u do xome this,way, I'm sure Dr.d81 and myself can get ya squared away with genetics. Outdoor is doable, just need climatizrd strains indica heavy that resist mold. Greenhouse even better

Land wise, grants pass, rogue river,are best climates for growing. East of the cascades is brutal, (cold-windy-early frosts) and,coast areas are hard as well (mold, mold, windy). Willamette valley works well, as does southern Oregon.

Its a great state, but culture shock will be big coming from Texas to Oregon. But definitely doable and a great place to live..

I am 70% working on 100%. I had a C&P apointment a couple of months ago, the guy said that he was putting me in for 100% P&T. Permanent and total.

I really dont need a job, so that will open up some options for me. I miss working but I will have ample time to work in my greenhouse. I dont expect to be big baller either. I would expect to have a few extra oz from time to time, nothing huge.
I would be interested in taking on a couple of red cards for other people. I really dont understand the system that well. I know that there are other people looking to get a buisness license, not me. I am more interested in homesteading and hangin with some real hippies. Where i live, there are not real hippies. Because you dont bathe or you are a free loader does not make you a hippy!

Theres CHEAP land in sprague river, bonanza, beatty, (check billyland.com) but its rough winters (high desert area) can homestead cheap though.

I personally love it here in the willamette valley though...its very laid back, affordable, people mind their own business. Most homestead stuff can be grown or raised in WV as well with the except of citrus fruit trees, and tropical stuff. I been looking at land and places pretty regularly, 200-275k can easily be found that have a couple acres, livable house, barn, well, outbuildings, and usually fenced and cross fenced. Bare acreage can be found 5-15k depending on location, water rights, and how much of the land has marketable lumber on it. Most of the land (in the valley and surrounding areas) has had Weyerhouser or another lumber company replant it with douglas fur trees. Means you pay more for the land, however if wanted that lumber is worth good money.

I pay $765 for a $93,000 house. I live in a high risk tornado/ wild fire area so I pay $250 a month in insurance. Insurance is really fucking me.. The realestate agent said that my insurance should have been closer to $150.

I think that I will hold off until I find an amazing deal. I see them from time to time. I would enjoy the cooler weather. I am done with 100F days and 85F nights for 3 months straight... It made my deployment to Iraq feel like home! I think Texas is hotter with the humidity!
