2 (9+3) = 2 x (9+3)

The () indicate that part needs to be solved separate first.

2 x 12 = 24

48/24=2.

So how do you get to 288?

For 288 to be to outcome 48 would have to be divided by something that is "smaller" (over 5 times) than the 48, which 2 (9+3) isn't unless there's a catch I'm missing :)

implied multiplication precedence (or some shit)

oh where did I get 29.86 from ?
Some new formula you just discovered in your head that allows to guestimate the value with less than a 10% error margin. How'd you do that? ;)

Yeah it's about the "order of operations". For example, multiplication comes before addition. It's in your example the division that precedes the rest.

2 + (3 × 4) is the same as 2 + 3 x 4 but:

2 x (3+4) = 2x7= 14
2 x 3 + 4 = 6+4 + 10

48 / 2 (3+9) = 24 x (3+9) = 24 x 12 = 288 bongsmilie

And that's the tricky part, totally fell for that one :eyesmoke: the () make it explicit but that's only for the last part of the expression, still have to start at the left and do the division first.

Lahada is riding a moped to a "club". She is going 29mph for the first 36 blocks (12 are 367', 2 are 452', the rest are somewhere in between), and 18mph for the last 9 blocks (with two 36' round a bouts). Klite is traveling East to West, more Southeast than West, for the most part. His speedometer says 23mph, BUT he's got giant (well, larger than big, but NOT gargantuan) headphones bumping some mad beats. At what point will these two cross paths, if ever (or will it be twice in this same trip)????????

To many variables not enough data :) unless they are carrying Jamon Iberico then I'll find those two!
