So how do you get to 288?

For 288 to be to outcome 48 would have to be divided by something that is "smaller" (over 5 times) than the 48, which 2 (9+3) isn't unless there's a catch I'm missing

5 bits is 0.625 byte which allows for 32 different decimal values with as max 31 (all bit on as in 11111 = 1+2+4+8+16=31).

Some new formula you just discovered in your head that allows to guestimate the value with less than a 10% error margin. How'd you do that?

Yeah it's about the "order of operations". For example, multiplication comes before addition. It's in your example the division that precedes the rest.

2 + (3 × 4) is the same as 2 + 3 x 4 but:

2 x (3+4) = 2x7= 14
2 x 3 + 4 = 6+4 + 10

48 / 2 (3+9) = 24 x (3+9) = 24 x 12 = 288

And that's the tricky part, totally fell for that one the () make it explicit but that's only for the last part of the expression, still have to start at the left and do the division first.
