That would be because, if I am right about this, it is a 7.62 full auto assault rifle, and it's Swiss made.
I'd say he got a good fucking deal on that gun.
A 1981 H&K MP5 full auto 9, goes for about $26,000.

It is Semi Automatic. Totally legal for your momma to own. Only 4,000 made it into the USA. Considered the finest military rifle ever built. Shoots 1/4 MOA. The machining is so precise that the parts all feel like glass on glass. The charging handle is shaped like a little keg of beer, but unlike say, an AK-47, the charging handle does not reciprocate with the bolt. These rifles are well known to go 800,000 rounds without a single broken part. It is heavy at about 13 lbs empty. The flash hider acts as the grenade launcher for the Blanco and the integral bipod can be moved to the front or rear of the hand guards, its cool.
You can no longer get these since the import ban of 1989 (Fuck you Bush 1), although you can get all the parts except the receiver. So other than the original 4,000 or so here, there will probably never be any more. Most expensive military rifle ever built at what was $4,800 a pop in 1988.
So its a Pre-Ban Assault weapon, which makes it worth quite a bit by itself, I know my PreBan Ak's and SKSs are almost worth twice as much as newer post ban ones. It is Chambered for SWISS 7.5mmx55mm ammo so its not easy ammo to get, either Norma or Wolf is what I use, although I have 2 cases of Swiss military ammo (GP11) coming (960 rounds) that cost me $500.
The rifle you are thinking of is the SIG 510-4, the AMT was a 7.62mm also imported into the USA, but they aren't sure how many made it here. Only a few.
