Banana Theory ?????

Anyone ever hear of this putting a banana next to your plant at 3-4 weeks veg period and let it ripen? The theory was while the banana ripens it gives off a gas, I forget what gas but starts with an E, and that gas helps in making the plant to a female.

Read it in another forum but multiple people says it works but I didn't see threads at RIU.

Give mine your thoughts, I thought it sounded funny but it it works GREAT!!!

Never heard of that. Sounds like people trying to mess with other peoples minds.

honeslty that sounds stupid... even if this gas does help... the banna will probably not emit enuf of it... example: saying you should put a small animal around your plant so it will benifit from the c02 that the animal emits.... if your really into it then try some expirements for yourself. if not then whatever

dry banna sink as a nute will help with budding,but dont know about what your on about.

You're talking about Ethylene. It is a plant hormone given off in a a gaseous form as many fruits ripen (including bananas.) According to wikipedia:

"Ethylene shortens the shelf life of many fruits by hastening fruit ripening and floral senescence. OpenDNS, bananas, and apples will ripen faster in the presence of ethylene. Bananas placed next to other fruits will produce enough ethylene to cause accelerated fruit ripening. Ethylene will shorten the shelf life of cut flowers and potted plants by accelerating floral senescence and floral abscission. Flowers and plants which are subjected to stress during shipping, handling, or storage produce ethylene causing a significant reduction in floral display. Flowers affected by ethylene include carnation, geranium, petunia, rose, and many others[19]."

I doubt ripening bananas would be economical in any sort of way as a source. I would definitely not recommend haphazardly throwing hormones at your plants either.

Anytime I eat a banana I save the peel and just drop it on top of the soil when I go to the room. Oh, and before I plant my germed seeds I bury a 1/2 banana in the soil, in each of the pots, peel and all. But I am always dumping coffee grounds on top too. Never killed a plant yet for it.

i just plant extra beans. i usually get more than enough females.

ethylene? Maybe, i don't know. I have never heard of that theory. I'm going to look into it. Would be cool to know how it works if the theory proves to be true.

Interesting read, but how does this transfer to cannabis growing?

I did say I was going to look into it, however if ethylene affect the sex of a Cucumber chances are, they will affect the sex of a Cannabis plant. They are also part of the same class/ Division which is a Flowering plant...meaning they share similar characteristics. Again, I'm going to look into it, tweak with the idea and see were it takes me. See if adding Ethylene to known male Clones will affect the gender. I will let you know what i find.

Please do keep us updated! I, as I am certain many others, am quite interested.

Did you ever do your experiment?

well i placed nana peels in tupperware for 2 weeks with 10 narkush/hindu seeds,, and 40 dieselryder seeds. i changed the peels twice as they rotted within the two weeks. well see results. i am also placing bananas nex to the sprouts thru show of sex. jus tryin it out, cant hurt since i grow organically anyway
