Huge fan leaves - Small braches

Hey there everyone... I have a question. I have a plant that is 4 weeks since it popped it's head out of soil. Don't know the strain. It's bagseed.
Initially, I put the germinated seed into a 4 inch pot and there it stayed for the first 2 weeks under 2 x 11 Watt CFL's on 24/0 in some old soil I had.

I then transplated to a 9 inch pot with John Innes Seed Sowing Compost. The plant is looking healthy and I dont water more than once a week.
The plant is 9 inches tall now and has 5 nodes. Thing is, the fan leaves have grown much more than the branches growing from where the fan leaves are attached to the main stem. The fan leaves are about 6 inches and the new branches are between 1 and 3 inches long.

Is this proportion normal and does it indicate anything about what strain I might have?

You have nothing to worry about, once you switch to 12/12 it'll all even out and your plant will explode with growth. Just get more lights before you switch.

Hey Turm, thanks for your reply... I don't even know if it's a female yet. I am planning on taking a couple of clones if it is. I think I might switch to 12/12 on April 20th (420 ;-)) for good luck. Thats a week from now so it will have 5 weeks of veg then.

sounds normal. its most likely an indica based on your description. furthermore, it is likely a female too, the fan leaf stems on males tend to be longer. not always, but most of the time.

Hmmm... Probably Indica, I don't mind as long as it's a she... I never heard of determining sex by the length of the fan leaf stems. The biggest fan leaf on my plant has a 4 inch stem and the leaf is 6 inches. Time will tell... If it does turn out to be male, I think I'll order some fem seeds now that I have to grow bug.

Agreed.........
I have a fem Purple Kush going right now, and it has long stems AND giant fan leaves.
OP, all I can suggest, is get your fan going to stimulate stem thickening.
Nothing to worry about!:-P

Ok cool... It's nice to get some re-assurance. The main stem is looking nice and thick - about 1cm. The new stems/branches are a little pewny. I'll see if I can pick up a fan somewhere cheap in town during the week. I am on a considerable tight budget (paying for weed is crippling me) The plant is looking well though.

Thanks for the links. I like the little usb powered desktop fans. Cheap and Cheerful!

I was typing an update last night and I took so long to complete it that when I clicked post, I had been logged out. Just now I noticed the "Restore Auto-Saved Content" button. Thank You, RIU! Very handy feature

So here's where I'm at... I toke a clone off my plant last night. I used honey as rooting gel. I just took off a low branch, cut its stem at a 45 degree angle, dipped it in honey and popped it into a small pot filled with fresh, moistened soil. I also added a 20 watt, 2700k cfl to the grow space.

Total lighting now: - 32 watt of 2700k and 15 watt of 4000k (I'm also using 60 watt incandescent to keep the temp up at 20 degrees C) 107 watt total power consumption.

I made a humidity dome by cutting the bottom off a plastic bottle and punched a few air holes in it. It fits just nicely inside the 5 inch pot, sitting on the soil.
The potted clone is the wardrobe, next to it's parent (don't know sex yet) on a saucer, on top of an portable tv I don't use anymore. I plugged in the tv and turned it on in the hope of providing some warmth underneath the pot. It worked. The saucer feels warm. I might take out the incandescent now as the tv seems to be keeping the temp up.

I'll be doing a bit of work today preparing the wardrobe for the 12/12 switch. First things first - I have major light leaks, so I'll be using pvc tape to correct that.

Thanks for reading and posting, guys.

i am growing Critical Kush right now and it started out the same way. huge leafs and barely any shoots.. then 2 weeks later she exploded and grew like crazy. i think the plant develops the leafs first to gather as much light as possible before its growth.. my stems are as thick as permanent markers and the main stem is 1" !!

Ya, I was thinking that of the huge fan leaves gathering the light... Can you put a time line on the growth, please? You said "2 weeks later" Later than what? Just curious.

You can peep this link, my last grow, first indoors, and also first CFL.
I update weekly starting at about 21 days when I moved out of the Solo cup.

This is the thread I have going now, haven't been quite as religious about taking pics and updating on time, but you still can get an idea of time, size, etc.
I haven't updated for a few days now, but I have been putting both of them outside from late morning to about 6 P.M., and consequently, have been watering the Sour Diesel in the 1 gal. pot daily.

Thanks for the links, Bakatare... What I gather from your first grow thread is that I need two things - Light and Patience

Well, today is 4/20, as they say in the states. We read our dates the opposite, so here it's 20/4. However, Happy 420 Everybody!

I intended on switching to 12/12 today (5 weeks from sprout) I'm still working out some light leaks and I dont have a timer yet so I'll be switching manually til I get one this week. I noticed today that one of the leaves near the top has some yellow / brown patches forming on it. The only thing I can attribute this to is heat stress as the temp in the grow space has raised since I've had the tv on in there. So, the temp has gone from an average of 20 degrees C to 25 degrees C. Or perhaps this is stress from taking the cutting a few days ago?

Another thing - The clone I took 4 days ago has some sort of mold or something fuzzy froming on the soil, just around where the stem is. I just used honey as a rooting hormone. It was an old jar of honey I had in the press. Could it be that I should have used fresh honey? I don't know. I googled about it and apparently, honey dosen't go off. Hmm... Well, I'll just keep an eye on it and see how it goes.

25C is OK man, 77F is fine.
Can you snap a pic of the color you're talking about?
The fuzzy stuff very well might be mold from the Honey, IDK-I've never tried it.
I now have some rooting powder, but the one time I did take clippings, I just stuffed them in soil to see what would happen, and they lasted the last month and half or so of the plant, had buds and everything, but I didn't chop, and now they are revegging with my 2 new plants.

Ok cool... It might be overwatering as I was watering once a week - but last week the soil was dry and the pot felt light, so I watered til it just started to run off. Remember, I am using a low nute soil - John Innes Seed Sowing Compost it says its good for 3 weeks feeding. As for the clone, I might take it out, re cut the stem and plant straight into fresh soil. What do you think?

Here's a pic of the unhealthy leaf. It's 3rd newest growth and I can see some discolouration on other tips of new growth. The lower leaves are fine.

My plant had its 1st night of rest last night. So the 12/12 photoperiod has begun.

Thanks for feedback,

That leaf in the middle of pic looks terrible, but from the leaf on right side of pic, I'm gonna say a K deficiency, with the rust colored spots.
Sorry, but I forgot........ What and how much are you feeding?
One thing I have found, is the Sativas I have grown like more nutes than an Indica side by side, same conditions, soil, etc.
Being that you just switched to flower, if it was me, I would plan to give veg nutes for another 2 weeks, maybe 3 depending how long the stretch lasts.

Ya, it does look terrible. Bless your eye sight! I can't see the leaf on the right you are referring to in the pic.

I'm not feeding it anything yet. I water it with boiled, cooled to room temp water. I water it every 5 to 7 days.

There is plenty more room in the pot for soil. I don't know why I didn't fill the pot up fully with soil when transplanting. I can see roots breaking the surface of the soil around the stem. I was thinking of topping up the pot with fresh soil at the next watering. I think adding this fresh soil might give it a bit of a nutrient boost? I know I will probably have to just buy some nutes online. I was thinking BioBizz as I've had success with their products before.
