flushing in stages

Hey Guys - if I were to try harvesting in phases, like the first half of the plant to allow more light time for the bottom, how would I go about doing a flush and doing a 2-3 day dark cycle? Would that even be possible? Or would the remaining bottom half of the plant be able to make it through...
