Zoombie World War z

The slower pace and quieter tone can largely be attributed to the studio’s demand that the film be rated PG-13, depriving us of the spraying blood, graphic flesh-eating, and satisfying head shots you often get in a zombie flick. But it’s also different because of the story’s global scale. The movie essentially is a series of set pieces, following Gerry from Philadelphia to Newark, N.J., to a temporary U.N. headquarters to South Korea to Jerusalem to, finally, a World Health Organization research facility. Various characters along the way provide a bit of back story (parts of which will be familiar to book-readers), and there also is an aspect of family drama, with Gerry forced to leave behind his wife (Mireille Enos) and two young daughters.

It seemed an odd choice to have the director of “Monster’s Ball” and “Finding Neverland” direct a film about the zombie apocalypse. But director Forster also has the Bond film “Quantum of Silence” on his resume so he also knows his way around an action piece. There are some nice jolts mixed in with humor. There is also an amazing sequence set aboard a plane that will have you gripping the armrests.

After grounding the story emotionally with Pitt and his family (Mireille Enos from AMC’s The Killing plays his wife), the chaos kicks in with some well-staged scenes of zombie panic that put the audience in the middle of the confusion.Like the zombies of Zack Snyder’s remake of “Dawn of the Dead,” these are not the plodding creatures we are used to. These zombies strike quickly, often in groups. When they’re not happy they let out a screech that sounds like an angry chicken. The premise is fine. It’s the presentation that falters. Shown in a very unnecessary 3D, the film is actually hurt by the process. Action scenes are too dark and many foreground objects are blurred when the focus is pulled to capture the action being featured.

In that sense, World War Z is a pretty traditional horror movie, which is unusual for a story that has such epic scope. I got the feeling that there were probably all kinds of scenes and subplots that were deleted in favor of this more streamlined (and just under two-hour) approach. Most of the world’s large cities have fallen, so Gerry and the military hopscotch from Philadelphia to Korea to Israel to Wales, examining the small successes other countries have had and pursuing possible remedies.
