Yield test between 1000W and a 400W let's settle this for once

I spend a lot of time reading and a lot of ltimes threads all come down to people saying you need more light then you have people saying that no no a 400 should produce the same. It seem there is a constant debate.
I don't have the enough room to do this but here's what I'm thinking.

Get 1 strain take 2 clones of this strain. Do 2 weeks veg and then flower one under a 1000W and one under a 400W. Keep conditions identical same nutes same everything the only variable being the light. We need someone to do this. let's settle this debate once and for all.

Now I would love to be the candidate to do this but I don't have the space or the lights. I have seen plenty of people that have like 3 1000's and a 400 so someone on this forum has got the resources to do this.

Now I am assuming that we haven't already tested this but if there's a thread feel free to post a link I just haven't seen it.

It is a no brainer, you will get more yield from a 1000 watt over a 400 watt, been proven over and over again.

I never knew there was a debate.

^^^THIS. You might be thinking of the debate for 2 400's vs. 1k over a flood table??? (I believe Al. B had an ongoing argument BACK in the day...)

There isn't: more penetration = more yields
I think there were tests of 600w vs 1000w, but I forget the results.

I literally just was reading another thread about a kid with fluffy airy buds. He had a 400W setup and people were arguing that he should be able to produce nice dense buds with the 400 and some were saying that he needs a 1000 Watts to get that. Then there was the debate that it can be achieved with a 400 and it went back and forth were some said it could some said it couldn't. Its probably the 5th thread in 2 days that I have seen the debate.

They must've never used all wattages, density is slightly higher with more watts.
It's mostly keeping the plants close as you can to the light for density.

I've run 400W and as much as 800W of HID light in my tent. Currently happy running 600W. Most I yielded was when I had the two 400W giving me the 800W total. Pretty close to that now though with 600W and am likely to surpass it with my current grow.

if you look at lumen output vs wattage and heat output you'll see that the ratio gets worse after you get over 600w's, although you may think 1000w is better its truely the best to use anything 600 or less. the true test would be 5x 600w's vs 3x 1000w's but from just looking at the numbers of the ratios youll see 600's will outperform. Also the ability to spread the light more evenly is achieved with more, less powerful lights, weed only can take so many lumens and the real goal with any wattage light is to get a good amount of light to the whole plant. You may also be able to just use the footprint diagrams and do 5x600's "optimal" footprint vs 3x 1000's "optimal" footprint

if your argument was correct, which it is not, then if u extraploate your reasoning, you will see that it makes no sense, you dont need a knowledge of growing to work this out, watts=grammes, more energy up to max saturation more bud as long as all variables are optimised

It's his strain...I get dense buds with 400/600/1000, doesn't matter!
Grower error or strain causes fluffy buds.
AT first I thought this thread was actually going to be an ACTUAL side by side comparison.
I THINK, and HAVE SEEN PERSONALLY from my first grow and set up that this DENSITY isn't from a lighting issue. I used DOZENS of cfls on some bagseed in ffof soil. I had ONE plant with good genetics. I used MOST of the lights on the tall SCRAGGLY (loose BUD/shit genetics) plants and kinda neglected THE good one.(which is now has a baby and some grand babies flowering under a 1000 watts) The buds were SO dense with cfl. Even when I didn't have PROPER lighting the buds were dense. So I say whatever...grow that shit!! I can't wait to see what this 1000 watter will do for this strain.
ON Another note... The GOOD ONE I still have is under the 1000 watt is AT LEAST, TWICE the size of her momma height wise, and side buds are as big as the cfl flowered main cola. And just as frosty!
Now I have REAL GENETICS going and can now compare THE GOOD ONE to some known genetics.

To make a LONG STORY SHORT... Lighting will increase bud size in a major. And density to a very small degree....

im trying to say efficiency wise 600ws are better http://forum.grasscity.com/indoor-medical-marijuana-growing/575802-do-600w-lights-generally-put-out-more-usable-lumens-than-1000ws.html i think, try reading down to the 7th or 8th post where he says hps is the peak of hps efficiency. It may be more efficient but people use 1000w's because the footprint is larger and they produce denser buds and stuff. I run a 430w hortilux eye and i like it but i get dense buds even though it isn't a 600 or 1000. It comes down to less plants, tighter grow space, and good ventilation.. and also PAR, the actual spectrums of light that your plant is gonna use. I am no expert on this subject but what i think it comes down to is the type of hood your using and how u ventilate. I've heard the XXL magnum hood is nice. Heres a thread i came by that goes over other growroom aspects and I like a lot of hobbes ideas. Grow ideas

of course, i know that 600w's is less energy than 1000w's, and 1000w's will produce more grams because you have more watts. The debate here i think is that what do you think would be more lumens vs wattage, without the whole PAR debate. in my opinion 5x 600w lights would outperform 3x 1000w's

based on what I have read, 600 watts is optimum between lumens and power consumption. After 600 you start drawing more power but lumens aren't as efficient. Still in the end 1000 is going to outproduce the 600 watt to watt but 600 is more efficient on the wallet. I also agree 5x600 watt will outperform the 3x1000 just because of area coverage of haveing 5 lights instead of 3 and the penetration is only so much more on the 1000. 600 watt gets my vote.

I have to agree that wattage has very little to do with density of buds.

I've used both a 600w and a 400w.

Currently I use 400w.

With a 600w I could grow 3ft tall plants with dense buds right down to the popcorn near the bottom.

With a 400w I can grow 2ft tall plants with dense buds right down to the popcorn.

I think if you allow your plants to outgrow the penetration power of your light then density will suffer.

I also agree that 3000w of 600's is gonna out perform 3000w of 1000's. just simply because of square footage of light footprints.

IMO with each of these lights you want plants as tall as below

250w 1.5ft tall plants.
400w 2ft tall plants
600w 3ft tall plants
1000w 4ft tall plants

Light footprints at maximum
250w 2x2
400w 3x3
600w 4x4
1000w 5x5

This is the maximum amount of footprint to use with each of the wattages.

I like your thinking there mate - bringing a correlated factor in for consideration.

wrong...vertical 1000's in a checkerboard pattern, growing 8 ft trees. drop a few from above + you'll yield like outdoor plants.

You don't have much heat with vertical lighting and no reflectors

I've seen 1kg dried/cured flowers from 1 plant with a warehouse setup.
It's mostly with the style of growing you use, scrog can yield great 1g+ per watt(with the right strains)

Then again they were a dispensary warehouse grow using 20x 1k watts...
You can get much closer to the plants without burning when you hang vert. + sidebuds get like tops.
