what is generally the problem with leds off ebay? Is it efficiency?
Not sure, I don't shop there. Maybe others can answer that question. I would guess quality.
18 watts is not going to do you any good. Unless you just want a Toy to look at.

Sellers will misrepresent wattage, footprint, spectrum, and parts used.
Ebay LED lights usually have weak results with short lifespans (this includes Blackstar).
There is a reason that they're being sold so cheap, in comparison to quality LED lights.
They are poorly made from low quality parts.
If something seems too good to be true, that's because it is.
I speak from experience, I found what people told me was a seller with a good rep, and good lights.
A 100% rating on ebay only means that people received their products undamaged.
It doesn't reflect the 100% feeling of disappointment the people who buy those lights experience after their first crop using them.
I bought one, the parts and spectrum looked good on the paper, in reality, it was junk.
Please learn from my mistake, don't get suckered in by ebay LED lights.
Read the threads stickied to the to of the page in this forum, they show, with proof, which LED's are worth your money.

Idk I bought 3 panels 1 from 1 maker 2 from another. I recieved the set of 2 panels first. The plants seem to be responding well to them. Just started flowering so well see in 8 weeks.

@bad karma: great, +k to you. I heard some horror stories about the panels, chips mounted on single thin plate of al and such. I respect your advice and will heed it.

I was thinking about these bastards: put "50w warm white led chip" into ebay search. The w/$ are simply absurd. With some reds and blues added, hell, what could go wrong?... I know. A lot. But still, the w/$... Also it seems that the drivers sold for those run them almost at max wattage. Which is a lot of wattage of leds. Opinions?

I will read out the shit of led threads first to see if anyone else tried. I have found an interesting one, but the results were not clear due (prolly) to growing mistakes. Than I guess it is my turn to make some educational mistakes.

I grow indoor for a short time. After a few moldy harvests, I decided to go autoflower in this cold unfriendly region we have, will try to harvest under the summer sun. So I decided to try my hand at a little breeding. Not gonna buy seeds year after year after what I heard about professional breeding practices. Currently, I am running a single 100w cfl in a small closet and it is kinda sufficient. I plan to grow heavily dwarfed plants in party cups and select for early seedling vigor, bud appearance, smell and potency, then go out in spring and do full scale evaluation - growth habit, resistences, yield...
So I can afford to experiment. It is a hobby for me, I can shell out some money, I do not need raw power, mostly I would like something that just works well, more equal light coverage, less overall heat, good handling, lower electricity bills, you know.

I know it sounds too good to be true and it will not be really true in its full extent. I expect complications. But how much true does it have to be to be worth it at that price?
I really appreciate advices. I am still learning about everything, your wisdom will not be wasted, I will take it into account, I promise.

Edit: btw, is there an smartphone app that would take a photo of white paper under a light and tell you the color spectrum in full par range? It should be possible, right?

See this is the point that our tireless worker....Bad Karma is making....

100% feedback from ebay sellers.....comments in feedback and RIU forums...like: 'Panel works great'... 'plants responding well' then....(always within the 1st year) the user stops posting about their panel or have upgraded...

I guess the biggest problem is not the spectrum but the longevity of the panels

I used these 50w multichips a bit....yeah they work...better option would be:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/50W-CREE-XLamp-XTE-XT-E-White-5pcs-Warm-White-5pcs-LED-Light-DC-30-36V-1500mA-/321264439948?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4accda528c

Better spectrum....quality chips..

thx chronikool. Do the chips work all right? Any way to know what spectrum they put out before, or after purchase? How much better are those crees? Noticably better effectivity? What spectrum did you run? I looked at your sign links, but the grow isn't there, right?

Yes....the multichips do work...Used a mixture of cool white (5500-6500k) and warm white (3000-3500k) So not the spectrum in terms of NM ...i was in my experimental zone as i hadnt seen much done with them and it suited my setup....so i went for it. I didnt buy the cheapest multichips..so beware if you go down this route.

The Crees have information to go with it....you can find out the 'BIN' numbers from the seller and get an idea of the spectrum. I used XP-Gs 3000k's as my 50w replacements....i am still using them now with a few changes to my setup coming in the new year.

Its a bit tiresome to go through....but its all in there
