Wick System + Rockwool Medium?

Hey all, I will be growing soon but some concerns have arrived with the heavy-duty research that comes with growing. I'm wanting to use a wick system since I'm a first-timer and everything but the medium my plant will be in worries me. I was going to do a basic Wick system with a 50/50 perlite/vermiculite but with research I've seen some places that claim the perlite/vermiculite mixture doesn't retain water very well and also that wick systems don't always pull enough water to the roots. So long story short, I'm wondering if I used Rockwool as a medium with a .5" -.75" thick Nylon rope as a wick, would it retain too much water or not enough?

For rockwool I'm using 4 wicks made from dollarstore rope that appears to be 6mm in diameter for a 6" by 5" piece of rockwool cut from a rockwool slab. It works fine

I've read this several times: Rockwool holds 10 times more water than soil, yet is impossible to over-water.

So too much water should not be a problem
